Ruth Hammond Obituary

Ruth Elizabeth "Blossom" Blake Hammond

Ruth Elizabeth "Blossom" Blake Hammond, 95, passed peaceably into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 12, 2011 at Providence Hospital in Everett, Washington.
Blossom was born December 11, 1915 in Barry, Illinois to Ernest Otto and Mary Gertrude (Potter) Blake. Blossom was married to Michael Glen Hammond from 1941 through 1971. Together they had five children, Michael, Steve, Mari Edgekoski - Hammond, Sharon Wandler and Tom Hammond-Doel.
Blossom is survived by her sister, Sara Catherine Blake; two sons, Steve and Tom; two daughters, Mari and Sharon; a son-in-law, Steve Wandler; two daughters-in-law, Gail Hammond and Deb Doel-Hammond; nephews, Larry, Robert, John and Daniel DeWitt; nieces, Linda Patience and Sandra Slusher; six grandchildren, Joel Hammond, Janel Hammond, Eric Hammond, Rene'e Cummings, Noah Conrad and Keenan Conrad; and three great-grandchildren, Caden Cummings, Cayden Conrad and Miyora Hammond.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister and brother-in-law, Naomi and Clyde Dewitt; son, Michael; and son-in-law, Gary Edgekoski. She is and will be deeply missed.
Blossom moved to Bellingham, Washington from Quincy, Illinois in 1945 and then to Everett in 1947, where she resided most of her life. In 1972 she lived in Napa, California for one year. She was an avid poet published in multiple books of poetry, a long time member of the Catholic Daughters of America and a member of many community associations. Over the past 30 years Blossom hand-made hundreds of baby blankets and assembled layettes donated to Pregnancy Aide and Catholic Community Services.
She was quite witty and had a good sense of humor to the very end. Blossom always stayed abreast of current events in the political world and was vigilant in warning of trends she saw. Blossom also did a stint as Republican Precinct Committeewoman. This was always interesting in the Hammond household as her ex-husband Mike was the Democratic Precinct Committeeman sparking many a lively debate.
A memorial mass will be officiated by Father Bryan Hersey and Father Ron Knudsen at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Immaculate Conception Church, 2509 Hoyt Avenue, Everett, Washington 98201. A reception will follow immediately after the mass at Matte Hall next to the church. All who knew Blossom are welcome to come and share in this last public celebration of her life.
Blossom: Steadfast, humorous, loving.
