Steven Sutton Obituary

Steven R. Sutton
Jan. 12, 1964- April 5, 2011

Sadly, Steve left us the morning of April 5. He was an amazing multi-talented young man. He is and always will be loved. He was a brother, uncle, cousin and loyal friend to many whom he leaves behind.
Steve was a graduate of Cascade High School, Whitworth College and attended Western Washington University. He went on to be a software program engineer with Microsoft.
Steve was born to Joyce and Ray Sutton of Everett, WA.
He leaves behind siblings, Sheila Sutton-Carter, Sandy Sutton Burrows, Dan Sutton, Joe (and DeAnna) Sutton, Scott Sutton, Mark (and Vicki) Sutton and Jan Webb; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce Sutton; and sister, Polly Sutton.
In his earlier years, Steve loved to spend time at his church camp at Tall Timber, Leavenworth. He also loved spending time at Lake Cavanaugh with family and friends. He enjoyed fixing and building things, as well as working on his landscaping projects at home or at the lake. He enjoyed traveling and watching old movies with a passion. Steve was a very talented singer and pianist. He was a former member of the Cascade High School Del Sonics and the Seattle Men's Choir.
His canine pals Denali, K'Lo and Leschi will miss their walks with him.
We will miss Steve more than words can say.
Remembrance donations are suggested to Tall Timber Ranch, www.talltimber.org or to a charity of your choice.
A memorial gathering will be announced at a later date.

Because Steve was the youngest and I was the oldest of nine siblings, I watched him grow up. When I was going through a particularly challenging time in my life, Steve invited me and my girls to stay with him for awhile. I got to know a beautiful, generous, talented, tortured man. I feel so blessed to have had that year with him because I had no idea what a wonderful man he really was. This is how I will remember him. Goodbye, little brother.

Steve was my true friend throughout turbulent junior high and high school years. It meant so much to me that he was my friend. I appreciated his sense of humor and wit, and his intellectual, musical/creative, and spiritual gifts. I am grateful to have known him, and deeply regret his untimely death. May he rest in peace.

As I write this lament there is a poster hanging near my computer dated March, 1995, given to me by Steve when we attended Gershwin's Porgy and Bess as staged by the Seattle Opera. It is something I will treasure the rest of my life since Steve has left. I knew him at Whitworth University and as an alumnus. He assisted me with computer software issues. We were good friends. I am in grief having learned of his passing only two days ago. However, he has gone where we all must go, on our way to being with our maker and redeemer. Rest in peace, dear departed friend.

I very much appreciated Steve as a student and then, later as a friend. He and I played some racket ball together and he beat me very badly. I had a chance to visit with him in Seattle several years ago and we spoke on the phone on occasion--last time was after he had attended the "Ring" by Wagner presented by Seattle Opera. I am very sad to hear of his death.

Steve and I were Tall Timber campers, and Whitworth students together. We shared a cabin one summer while on staff. Steve was a joy as a friend. His positive attitude and brilliant smile lifted the spirits of all.

Steve was a delightful college friend. When we were at Whitworth we attended the symphony, went to the movies and laughed a lot. We sang together in the Whitworth choir and toured Hawaii. Steve taught me how to drive stick shift in his Toyota. I will miss him.

Steve was a great friend and I have many memories of him from Tall Timber, Whitworth, and travels as well. When I heard of Steve's death I pulled out my wedding video and listened to him playing the piano and singing at my wedding. Such a talented and fun loving young man. He will be missed.

Steve was a dear friend beginning in middle school when we dressed up as Raggedy Ann and Andy for Halloween. We went on to work at Tall Timber together after having been campers for many years. His was a voice of reason when things were overwhelming at camp! More importantly, his focus was on how we could best serve God and love the campers. His gifts as musician and friend will not be forgotten--he was a part of so many weddings! Peace and grace of Christ to Steve and to all who loved him.

It is always sad to become aware of a former student's passing; especially one who stood out as unusually talented at an early age! As Steve's fifth grade teacher, I will always remember his leadership in our end of the school year talent show; and how he brought many of us to tears with his closing of the show by reciting the "Gettysburg Address" from memory!
Several years later, it was an additional pleasure to have him sing at my wedding!
Thank you, Joyce, for sharing such a beautiful son with the rest of us!

So sorry to hear of Steve's passing as well. I remember playing the piano for him as he shared his amazing voice with all of us in Del Sonics. May he rest in peace....Tara Smith

Steve was a shining light for all who knew him. In high school we all wanted to be as good of a singer and so into the groove - as Steve was. I won't forget when he sang as his Senior solo - "the times of your life" by Paul Anka. He set the bar in Del Sonics for scat singing... and was a great example of wonderful human being. I learned a lot about singing from watching Steve. He left an impression on many people and will not be forgotten. Sutton family, I'm so sorry for your loss.
Here is a link to the song Steve sang. I wish I had a recording of him singing it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWHL_4_ia_Y

My brother, Steve, was one of my biggest joys in life. I loved the time we spent together. He especially enjoyed dining at the Edmonds Anthony's Beach Cafe' and could not resist their clam chowder and oysters.

He was a fabulous cook and spent many a day preparing good food for family and friends.

We were not only siblings, but good friends also. I will miss him forever.

I am so sorry and saddened to hear of Steves passing. I grew up in the Mukilteo Presbyterian church with Steve, and attended Tall Timber camps with him. He was always such a nice, caring and positive young man.
