Marvin Harvey Obituary

Marvin P. Harvey

Marv passed on to join the Lord on August 20, 2005, after a five year battle with pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
He was born to Elmer and Daisy Harvey, in Raymond, Washington, on September 15, 1933. After graduating from Raymond High School in 1951, he attended Grays Harbor JC and Western Washington University where he excelled in football. College was interrupted by a two year stint in the army where he served as a surgical technician in Germany. It was there that he developed his love for Europe and he returned many times to explore various regions. Upon completion of his enlistment he returned to WWU. He earned a BA in 1957 and a masters degree in 1961. While an under graduate at Western he met, and later married, Eugenia Gray, who preceded him in joining the Lord in 1973. They had two daughters, Cheryl and Sarah.
Marv was an elementary school teacher and principal in the Lake Stevens School District for 30 years. He taught several years at Hillcrest Elementary and acted as federal programs coordinator before accepting the position of elementry school principal, serving at both Mt. Pilchuck and Hillcrest Elementary Schools. Marv was active in the Lake Stevens Kiwanis club for 16 years and held a variety of club offices during that time.
A wide area of interests kept him active during his working years and into retirement. A love of woodworking prompted him to build his own home in Marysville in 1966. Over the years he developed great skill in relief carving, winning many awards for his work. In later years he became interested in sign making and produced many of the carved and sandblasted signs for the City of Lake Stevens and Lake Stevens Schools. In retirement he remained active, playing golf and seniors slow-pitch softball until last year when his health limited him.
He met Joyce Ford Cornish when she volunteered to work on art projects at his school. They discovered they had common interests in art, outdoor sports and travel. She introduced him to clam digging, wading for crabs, and fishing. During their 30 years of marriage they traveled extensively through Europe and RV'd across Canada and the US, including Alaska. They also enjoyed golfing together and teamed up again on many of Marv's carving projects, which Joyce painted.
Marv is survived by Joyce; his daughterCheryl (Mark) Giffeyof Chehalis, and granddaughters, Kelly and Lindsey; daughter, Sarah (Kit) Hoiby, of Phoenix; step-children, Cherie Cornish (Bill Spies), of Lake Stervens, and Steve (Peggy) Cornish, of Lakewood.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., on Saturday, Sep 10, at Shaefer-Shipman Funeral Home, 804 State Street in Marysville. A celebration of his life will follow at the Harvey home, 8229-56th Drive N.E., Marysville.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the American Lung Association.

Mr. Harvey, I remember him from the late 70's, he was my prinipal at Mt. Pilchuck. He was a prinicpal that I had no fear of because he was so kind and friendly. It was nice to have known such a man.

Mr. Harvey was my 5th and 6th grade teacher at good old Hillcrest. By the time my two boys-Jake and Nate went to Hillcrest, Mr. Harvey was their principal. We all had the greatest respect for him. When I remember back to my grade school days. he is the first teacher I always think about. I'm sure he'll be missed by many he has touched through the years.

Marv and I grew up in the same neighborhood in Raymond and shared many of lifes experiences. We always had fun when Marv was around. The last time we saw Marv and Joyce was in the Eugene Home Depot. That chance meeting becomes very important to us now. Joyce we are indeed saddened.

Marv, your sense of humor was endless.

I recall playing next to you on the football field, you were a tackle and I a guard at Raymond High School in 1951. What fun. And we were to meet again on the softball field as seniors.

Our thoughts are with Joyce and your family.

I got my first teaching job from Marv Harvey. Marv believed in me, young "Greenhorn" teacher that I was back then. He became my principal, my friend, and my mentor. We shared a wicked sense of humor and love of practical jokes. I remember his retirement party. The staff came out marching and singing OUR version of the song from White Christmas, "We'll follor the old man wherever he wants to go." It is becasue of the faith that he showed in me way back when that I am beginning the 23rd year of teaching this fall. Marv, I would still follow you anywhere. Fondly, Nancy Hash

Marv, you've been an important part of our family's lives for the past 26 years. You were always there for us... a valued source of wisdom and advice, our correspondent abroad as you emailed us from exotic locations, always ready to lend a hand with our house projects, our source of many thousands of jokes, and most of all, a cherished friend who opened your heart to us. You will be deeply missed.

I have known Marvin all of my life being his younger cousin. I will miss him for his sense of humor and his caring for others. To my parents he was their other son.

Rest in peace Marv.

I have fond memories of living next door to Marv and Joyce for almost 10 years. He was always there to lend a hand and more often had a cute joke to share. He gave me a strong shoulder to lean on when my husband, Skip, was killed suddenly. I will always remember his helpful advice when I became a single woman. Although my dogs barked at him whenever he dared enter his own backyard(I think it was because his yard looked so nice compared to their own), he always had a smile and a wave and a joke for me. Sometimes there was even a zucchinni, too.
