Durham

Marvin B. Wheeler, 88, passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at Duke Regional Hospital. He was born in Oxford to the late Cooper Pitt Wheeler and Jessie Burnette Wheeler.

Mr. Wheeler was a U.S. Navy veteran, a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, and a retired head cashier with the Liggett Myers Group. He was the last surviving member of 10 children. He loved gardening, spending time with friends on the golf course, attending Durham Bulls and walking his favorite companion, Pepper.

Mr. Wheeler is survived by his wife, Bobbie Holt Wheeler; numerous nieces, nephews and friends; and special friend Roy Clark who has been very helpful to the Wheeler family.

A funeral service will be held 1p.m. on Wednesday, July 12 at Bethany United Methodist Church with Rev. Julia Webb-Bowden officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in the Bethany United Methodist Church's Fellowship Center following the burial.

I was fortunate to meet Marvin at the ballpark in 2007. We must have jointly attended over 300 games together over the next four years. It was ALWAYS a treat to see him, he was so happy to be at the stadium and his enthusiasm was contagious.

One day in 2008, Marvin came in with a bag of 100+ golf balls that he had come across while walking his dog at the golf course. He told me he picked them up for me, and cleaned them all up. I still have the balls and the bag...
