Summer Murphy, born in California in 1932, died May 25, 2011.
She graduated from the University of Berkley and stayed on for graduate work. A widow, she came to Sarasota just five scant years ago.
She is survived by her two children April Beker of Geneva, Switzerland and Marc Citrin of Sarasota, Fla.
A private service will be held for her in Palm Springs, Calif.

Summer Murphy was a fantastically charming woman. I met her on a flight to Paris and she took to me, in her way, by gently scolding me when I spilt coffee (with milk- gasp!!) on her white pants. I was just 22, it was my first time living abroad and she taught me so much. I was able to stay with her twice in Palm Desert and enjoy her wit and cool borscht. She never revealed her age to me (a secret now revealed!)... I have had a gift for her that I have had wrapped for the last 8 years...Couldn't get in touch with her in the past few years, though she crossed my mind and heart often. I will miss you, Summer. I hope to be half as elegant and generous as you were....

Summer was a wonderful person. She was helpful, friendly and involved. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. My sincere condolences to the family. Please know that she was loved and admired by many of us.

Anna, I believe youmailed me a personal announcememt of lovely Summer's passing and I was stunned.
BUT I HAVE FORGOTTEN YOUR LAST NAME. If the memorial service in Palm Springs hasn't been held, please tell me the time and place. You know I was more than a casual friend. All who knew and came to love Summer Murphy are saddened by her passing. She brought sparkling wit, intelligence, and curiosity to everything she touched, endearing herself to those around her. May her family be comforted in knowing that Summer’s many friends share their sense of loss.

I remember Summer very well in the Palm Springs Ballroom Dance community about 15 years ago. She was always so friendly. Have wondered several times where she was.

I'm saddened to hear about Summer's passing. She was a very active and attractive lady. Summer keep her curiosity and interest in literature and arts. She came to most of my library sponsored programs and had always a nice word. she was an avid reader. I'll miss seeing elegantly fashionable Summer here at the Library. RIP.
