Crawford Hawkins Obituary

Hawkins, M.D., Dr. Crawford T.
December 12, 1923 - June 29, 2018
Dr. Crawford T. Hawkins, Jr. was born December 12, 1923 in Fargo, ND, the son of Crawford Tucker Hawkins, Sr. and Myrtle Olson, the oldest of four boys, brothers Donald Hawkins (deceased), Loughery (Gail) Hawkins and Henry Hawkins, both of St. Louis, MO.
Crawford left Fargo at 18 and joined the U.S. Army Artillery in the Baltic region, and never returned to Fargo. He served in the Korean War as a Doctor. With the Military he went to the University of Illinois and interned at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. While at Cook County he met and married Evelyn Margaret VanDerVeen, now deceased, and had seven children: Vicki Nolan of Champaign, IL, Mary Russo of Jacksonville, IL, Tucker Hawkins, now deceased, Debra Hak of Santa Monica, CA, Nancy Claussen of Glen View, IL, Kathy Montemurro of Glen View, IL, and Mark Hawkins of Chillicothe, IL. Crawford practiced in Streator, IL from 1953, where he founded the Medical Arts Group/Streator Medical Clinic S.C. in 1960 with 13 doctors.
Crawford married Joann Glos in 1974 and added three stepchildren, Valarie Jarocki of Albuquerque, NM, Robert Glos of Cincinnati, OH, and Julie Wig of Ottawa, IL. Together they have 19 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Crawford carried 4 medical licenses in California, Arizona, Illinois, and Florida. He spent 3 months visiting those states and then decided to move to Sarasota in 1978.
He began a new practice and served on the staff of Sarasota Memorial Hospital and Doctors Hospital. Eventually selling his practice, Crawford worked for Holland America Wind Star Sailing Ships as a ship's doctor.
They loved their schedule, spending 3 months every Spring in Tahiti, 3 months at home, and 3 months in the Mediterranean, bringing the ship to Barbados in the Winter.
Crawford retired again, but retirement didn't suit him, so he worked part time at the local V.A. Clinic, and then for the Rosekamp Institute until he had an accident that left his speech impaired.
He loved his yard, and he worked to keep it lovely. Joann will miss him greatly.
Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 pm Friday, July 6th at Toale Brothers Funeral Homes, Gulf Gate Chapel. A Funeral Mass at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Crawford's family requests memorial contributions be made to The Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org. To send condolences please visit www.toalebrothers.com.

Dr. Hawkins was a wonderful doctor and helped me greatly with my toddler son at a very difficult time. I credit his guidance, encouragement, and his extensive knowledge of Juvenile Diabetes with my son's successful childhood. I am forever grateful.

Crawford was a kind, respected colleague. We so admired his enthusiasm for cruising and enjoyed his camaraderie at the Serendipity Balls supporting the American Cancer Society.

Our thoughts are with you Joann as we reflect on fond memories,

I was 10 years when I met him in the first week of his practice. He was so nice to a little girl with polio and found out every thing he could do to help me. His birthday was the same as my Mom's & she brought him Christmas cookies every year. My husband went to him too. We stayed friends all this time loved having lunch with him & Jo was always fun & lots of laughter. My prayers are with you all. Rest In Peace my friend.

A great doctor and a fun person. He diagnosed something for me as a kid that no one else could figure out. Wicked smart.
