Joel Van Citters Obituary

Van Citters, Joel M
Feb. 23, 1949 - Mar. 13, 2015
Joel M. Van Citters, 66, of Sarasota, Fla., died Friday, March 13, at home in the loving embrace of his wife, Kathy Walker Van Citters, and surrounded by family. Joel had valiantly fought a year-long battle against an aggressive cancer.
Joel was born Feb. 23, 1949, in Minnesota to Gordon Wayne and Edith (Kenny) Van Citters. When he was two, his family moved to a country home near Quakertown in Bucks County, Penn., where Joel's earliest and fondest childhood memories were formed. His father's career later took the family to Moorestown, N.J., where Joel made lifelong friends and graduated from Moorestown High School in 1967.
He attended Boston University after high school before setting off with friends to explore the country in late '60s fashion, storing up matchless memories, sampling an array of life experiences and generally having a blast.
Earning a degree in television and film at Bucks County Community College, Joel found a profession that utilized his multi-faceted creativity, talents and passion for life. His 40-year career as a writer, producer and director for television and film productions was launched in the nation's largest markets, including the PBS station in Philadelphia and the CBS affiliate in Boston.
In 1992, Joel relocated to Florida where he soon discovered Sarasota and quickly claimed it as home. As president of his own companies in Boston and later in Sarasota, Joel produced video, film, print and Web content for clients including IBM, Xerox, John Hancock Insurance, Washington Mutual, Goodyear Tire and Rubber, and numerous Sarasota and Tampa Bay area companies and organizations.
A longtime member of the Directors Guild of America, Joel was highly regarded as an accomplished manager of creative people and complex situations who demonstrated integrity and professionalism in dealing with clients and crew members.
His numerous awards include three New England Emmys, five Addys, an IRIS award, and the Ohio State University Award for Excellence in Broadcasting. Joel worked alongside and directed numerous celebrities. A favorite career highlight was directing and scripting a video featuring the (late) news legend Walter Cronkite on his sailboat at Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard.
A talented still photographer, Joel's photography was seen in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune's Style Magazine in more than 100 travel stories contributed by him and Kathy from 1997 through 2013.
Joel was multi-talented and had many diverse interests. He could have had a successful career as a musician, writer, chef, pilot or carpenter.
Joel's quick, insightful and usually irreverent wit was matched only by his generous, tender heart. He was a supportive friend and mentor to many.
In the year following Joel's unexpected diagnosis, he and Kathy were bolstered by the outpouring of support from family and friends. To those who knew him, Joel retained his life-embracing outlook until the end. Frequent visits with his brother and sister, Kathy's family, and the couple's close friends were filled with laughter, long talks, and witty exchanges. These times helped to sustain Joel through numerous hospitalizations, surgeries and treatments.
Joel is survived by Kathy, his wife, soul mate and forever sweetheart; and by his brother, Dr. Gordon Wayne Van Citters Jr. (Lisa), Annapolis, MD; his sister, Laurel Light (Jon), West Chester, Penn.; stepson, Matthew Barfield (Sarah), and grandchildren Dylan, Seth and Ryder; sister-in-law June (Bill) Crews; brothers-in-law Craig (Pam) and Rick (Peggy) Walker; mother-in-law Edith (John) Fyvie, all of Jacksonville, Fla; and six nieces and seven nephews from both families. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Three weeks before his death, Joel relished every minute of his 66th birthday party at a small gathering of family and friends that was a memorable love-fest and celebration of an amazing man with uncommon courage. In keeping with Joel's wishes, there will be no formal memorial service.

Joel & Kathy, 1994.

This is Kathy, Joel's wife, always his wife, can't do the other "w" word.

In case some of you who wrote on legacy are checking in, note that the Herald-Tribune obituary is the longest and most descriptive of Joel's life but it will come off the legacy.com site this week, so you might want to read it now if you only saw the much shorter Philly and Boston obits, which apparently are permanent on legacy.com; and no, I don't know why the policies differ.

Some friends from the 60s-70s expressed hope that the Joel you knew way back when lived a happy life after you lost contact. Yes! Your friend and my sweetheart lived a full and interesting life, and the 21 years and two months that we had together were filled with love, laughter, adventure--the happiest years any couple could wish to have. And we had the sense to know how very fortunate we were.

If you want to see samples of Joel's photography and videos and web content, look at AllMediaMarketing.net. The site hasn't been updated since he got sick, but he built it with an array of materials. The site will stay up until I can bear to deal with it.

Attached is a photo that was taken in the spring of 1994, soon after we met. It was a Saturday and I was doing PR for a charity fundraiser. Not wanting us to spend the day apart, Joel said, "I'll grab my camera and go with you and donate the pics." That was how we did life--together.

Best wishes for a long and happy life.

Kathy

Joel was an important part of my life when I needed an important friend. Joel and I worked together when I was on television in Boston and we worked even more frequently when I became a freelancer (due to Joel's guidance).

We worked and laughed and made fun of the world around us. His talent was huge and his sensibility while working was invaluable to clients and colleagues.

He was the photographer at my wedding and was a great friend to both me and my wife Maxie.

It took me so long to write this remembrance because I wanted to write it with love and not the pain of his loss.

To me he was "The Director" and I will always treasure his memory.

Corn and nuts, my friend.

With love,

Chucker

I'm in shock to hear this news. I was with Joel back in the late 70's, early 80's during his Channel 7, Boston days. All the memories are flooding back as I think of him. He was such an incredible and talented guy. He mastered everything he touched (except for the time he took that sharp turn going 1 mile per hour and I fell off the back of the 250cc Honda motorcycle. Luckily for me, he was a better pilot in his Cessna. His photography awed me, even as we pointed cameras in the same direction, his was a masterpiece... mine was a snapshot. His guitar pickin' was equal to his other talents. He was a gentle, fun, lovely soul.... and though I never met you, Kathy, you were so lucky to have found each other. I only wish I could have heard his laugh one last time. And yes, this photo captures him perfectly. Straight-forward, honest, open, joyful. A friend to all who ever met him. What a sad day for us all to lose SUCH a man.

Kathy, I,like Bart was part of Van's journey out west in the late 60's. We were quite a group. Many were the times we played music til the wee hours. We had recently reconnected but, sadly, much too late. I will forever regret not getting to see him again. He will be missed by all.

We were so sorry to hear about Joel. We had the privilege of working with him on several video projects in Sarasota. He was fun, creative and just a wonderful guy to be around. It hardly seemed like work. Kathy, we know how much you and the rest of his family will miss him. We will too. He was a very special man.

I can truly say that Joel was one of those few people who changed my life for the better. His imagination and delightful humor sticks with me to this day, and I still smile at the outrageous ideas he injured up. (I'm smiling right now, just looking at his bio photo on this web-page). Joel was a great guy and a great friend when I needed one. He seemed to know the right thing to say to lighten the moment. I know my experience with Joel was just a fraction of all those that he impacted. He will be missed by many, but we all cherish the memories!

I was lucky to be able to work with Kathy for many years. And even luckier that I met Joel along the way, though he was tasked at one point with helping make me more presentable in interactions with the media (I do not "make presentable" easily). When I think of Kathy, I think of Joel, and am saddened that they will be apart, at least for now. My prayers and thoughts are with the whole family, as I know this will be a tough period. In the end, I hope good memories survive, along with smiles.

I was a part of Joel's adventure out west in the late '60's and even then, his guitar mastery and humor were significant signs that he would leave the world a better place by being a part of it. Bart Miller

Kathy - I was shocked and so saddened to read about Joel yesterday. I saw the two of you so seldom but it always was a delight to reconnect. My heart goes out to you. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I worked with Joel in the late 70s/early 80s in Boston. Wonderful coworker, funny guy, and I bought his Yamaha XS11 when he was done with it in about 81-82... I hope he was living a happy life, and am sad to learn he passed. Seems he enchanted many just by being Joel. RIP Joel.

I played music in a trio with Van back in the early 70's. He taught me some good guitar & we always laughed a lot. I had recently connected with him and spoke on the phone for an hour a year or so ago, and it was like no time had passed. I'd been thinking of him just last week. Sorry to hear this sad news. Love to family & friends. Take care.
