Bradley Summers Obituary

Bradley Kent Summers
May 18, 1958 - June 23, 2016
Bradley Kent Summers lived 58 incredible years on this beautiful earth. He was born May 18, 1958, in Logan, Utah, the youngest son of Lowell Poiney and Eva Marie Summers. He passed away on the morning of June 23, 2016. Brad married his true love and eternal companion, Mary Ann Thomson, on June 12, 1986, in the Logan LDS Temple. They are blessed with seven children: Catherine, Bradley, Peter, Mark, Michael, Grace and Anne.
Brad's life exemplified his sincere love for people. His devotion to family and friends guided his every action. Brad always put others before himself. He loved to laugh and make others laugh. Brad was eager to share his passions and hobbies with those he loved.
Growing up in Logan, Brad had the idyllic childhood, fishing and playing in the Logan River near his home. He had boundless enthusiasm for nature and camping, which grew into a lifelong joy of adventure in the outdoors.
Brad was a dedicated and gifted student. He graduated from Logan High School in 1976. In 1982, he graduated summa cum laude from Utah State University with a degree in biology. He graduated from the University of Utah Medical School in 1986. Brad continued his education by completing a residency in dermatology at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in 1990 and a fellowship in Mohs surgery at The Ohio State University in 1993.
After completing his education, Brad returned to Logan to raise his family. Being near his parents was important to Brad, who was a devoted and caring son. Lowell and Eva were blessed greatly by his tenderness and love. Brad practiced dermatology in Logan, Ogden, the University of Utah Medical Center and the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Brad regarded his patients as family and treated them with sincere compassion.
Brad valued his membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a deep love for and devotion to his Savior. Brad exemplified that love and devotion through the Christ-like life that he lived. From 1977-79, Brad faithfully served a LDS mission to Tokyo, Japan. He has also served in a variety of teaching and leadership positions, including thirteen years working closely with the young men in the Boy Scouts of America. His life demonstrated the mission and ideals of Scouting. He had a tremendous influence on the lives of many young men. Recently, Brad discovered a gift for the dramatic arts. He performed alongside his family in many community theater productions.
Brad's most cherished role is as a loving and caring husband and father. He always made his family his highest priority, sharing his love through the activities and adventures he provided. He made the dreams of his wife and children his own. Brad loved spending time in the great outdoors, including hiking, fishing, canoeing, ice skating, and teaching his children to ski at Beaver Mountain. He especially enjoyed their annual family reunion in the Tetons. Brad and his wife Mary Ann made their home a warm and loving place where all felt safe and loved. The countless memories he made with his family are his greatest gift and legacy.
Brad is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; his children, Catherine Ann, Bradley Kent Jr., Peter Thomas, Mark William, Michael Richard, Grace Marie and Anne Elizabeth Ruth; his siblings, Paul (Dora May) Summers, Margaret (Samuel) Daines; and sisters-in-law, Kaye Summers and Laurie Summers (David Pisani). He was preceded in death by his father Lowell Summers, his mother, Eva Sealy Summers and his brothers Richard P. Summers and Scott L. Summers. He is also, survived by Mary Ann's parents, Ariel and Ruth Thomson; and sisters, Diana (Marc) Anderson, Julie (Bret) Peterson, Betty (Gordon) Daines, Janie (Danny) Conway; as well as many adoring nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 1, at 11 a.m. at the Mount Logan Stake Center, 565 E. 100 South, Logan. Friends and family are invited to call Thursday, June 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St., Logan, and Friday, July 1, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., at the Mount Logan Stake Center. Interment will be at the Logan City Cemetery.
Mary Ann and the children would like to thank family, friends and community for their love and support. Condolences and memories may be shared online at www.allenmortuaries.net.

MaryAnn and Kids,
I still to this day ask my patients and friends that are from Logan if they had ever had the opportunity to ever get to meet Brad and if they have, they all as well miss him very much. He had left so many beautiful memories with so many of us. I had never got the chance to meet you or your beautiful family, however, we all knew you guys very well by the amazing stories of your time together.
He is very truly missed. I wish you the best and you are in our thoughts.

Dr. Summers had a wonderful way about him. I was a patient for the better part of ten years but I didn't feel like a patient--just a friend getting good advice and care from a trusted friend. He is missed, but will be remembered in the best of ways. Richard Kendell

July 23, 2016

I learned just today that Dr. Summers had passed away. I had been his patient for many years. He was a great doctor, a friend and confidant. I will miss his good care and the kind and gentle way he practiced medicine. My sincere sympathies to the Summers family. May God bless you all after the loss of this exemplary man. Richard E. Kendell, North Salt Lake.

Protocoligorically Correct

July 3, 2016

Mary Ann,

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of your wonderful husband. Brad was always so kind and complimentary to me. From our first meeting during rehearsals for Annie to our brief chat following a delightful performance of Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang, he acknowledged the talents of others while downplaying his own. I suppose my favorite on-stage experience with Brand was Protocoligorically Correct from Slipper and the Rose.

He was also a proud father who enjoyed sharing the stage with his children--and such delightful and talented children they are, too. Whether swaying on a vine swing or dancing to Latin rhythms, from youngest to oldest, they brought a smile to his face. It was my privilege to watch this both from the wings and from the audience.

Finally, I am grateful for Brad's skills as a physician and surgeon. Members of my family and I have all benefited from his acumen, his advice, and his assurances. His mix of treatment, instruction, conversation, and humor worked well for me, as I'm sure it did for so many others. I've read other tributes to his ability as a surgeon, and I can also attest to this personally.

Again, my condolences to you and your children. My thoughts are with you all.

Best, Scott L. Hunsaker

Dear Summers Family, I was so sad to hear of the loss of Dr. Bradley Summers. I have so much admiration and respect for him. Three years ago, my, then, 18-year-old daughter became a patient of Dr. Summers anticipating a terrifying surgery requiring Moh's in her right facial cheek. How terrified we were. He was so caring and professional. He was very sensitive to her fears and was very encouraging. Thanks to his expertise, and the expertise of Dr. Casey Isom, there is virtually no sign on my beautiful daughter's face that that surgery ever happened!! Every time I look at her, I think there could only have been a miracle that it all turned out the way it did! . . . and Dr. Bradley Summers was that miracle! It must be that I am so thankful for two parents who must have encouraged and supported him to study hard and develop his medical skills . . . and it must be that I am thankful for his wife to be supportive in continuing his education as a surgeon . . . were it not for his motivation to continue learning and his families support, our outcome would have been vastly different . . . his dedication to his medical talents changed my daughter's outcome, and we cannot be more grateful! Our thoughts and prayers are with you now as Dr. Summers has begun a new path in pursuing all that he can be! I know one thing . . . that this very day he is helping people. Thank you Dr. Bradley Summers.
Sincerely, Mary Jo Hansen

Dr. Summers skillfully performed several surgeries on me at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. He had a keen eye for any skin issue that needed immediate attention. I asked him why he chose to be a dermatologist, and he replied, I enjoy surgery and prefer having patients who are awake during the procedure. He was so proud of his family and shared vacation adventure stories. I am truly heartbroken that he left us so soon. My thoughts and prayers are with his beautiful family.

I first met Dr. Summer's as a patient at the Layton Tanner Clinic. When I heard he had relocated to Ogden I followed him to the new location. He has treated me for 16 years! I feel as though he was not only my dermatologist but a great friend. I was a regular and saw him every 6 months. He would always ask how my kids were doing and he would update me on his family. Dr. Summer's has treated our entire "fair skinned" family!! Words can't express how saddened we are to hear of your loss. May loving memories bring you peace and comfort. Our prayers are with your family.

Mary Ann, our heart goes out to you and your family. Dr Summers cared for my father for many years, and he has cared for us for many years as well. We shared common interest in Scouting and youth. While he was doing his doctor thing I greatly enjoyed hearing about his Scouting trips, his service to others, and his family. He is an extraordinary skilled and compassionate physician, which we very much appreciated. But more than that he is one of those very few really, really good guys. In my world that's about the highest compliment I can offer. I know you will miss him, as will we. Till another bright day and happy reunion we pray that Father will bless you and your family with peace and comfort. Thank you for sharing Dr Summers with us.

Dr. Summers was so kind and gentle and put me at peace at one of the most scary times in my life when I found out I had cancer. Reading all these wonderful tributes to him is a testament to the kind of man he was.

Dear Maryann and Family,

I only recently got to know Brad through performing in Chitty Chitty. I never saw him without a smile on his face or uttering a kind word to someone. He was one of those rare souls who is genuine and true to whomever he met. He was immediately disarming and gracious to me, and I'm so fortunate l got to know him, if even for just a few months. Thanks for sharing him with us.

I am so sad to learn of your family's loss. His death is a loss for the community as well, who knew him as a good man and a good doctor, and a man of simplicity, humility, depth and stature. I know him as a kind soul. My deepest sympathies.

We still all are so shocked to hear of his passing. He was such a kind hearted man and I will truly miss him. I had the wonderful opportunity to work with him for 25 years, and feel very blessed I did have this opportunity to know him and laugh with him. He was such a caring man, and when he asked you "how are you doing", he really wanted to know. It is rare to find someone like him. To the Summers family my prayers and thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

My heart is hurting with the news of Dr. Summers passing. I worked for him for 12 years. He and the rest of the staff became a second family to me. He genuinely cared about his staff and patience. Some people you just think as being invincible. This just makes me realize how precious life is and to never take any for granted. He will be greatly missed.

Maryann,
Words cannot express the sorrow we feel in our hearts for you. We remember seeing you guys coming into church, all these adorable blondes, sitting in a row dressed darling, so sweet and reverent. I went from kindergarten to high school with Brad. He'd pump me home from The Jr. High on his bike. Sweetest kid I ever knew! He was definetley one of the most preferred men of the class of '76!!! We were blessed to have you as neighbors for awhile and to have our kids grow up together. What an honor to have called him friend!

Maryann and Children,
Your Husband and Father was just an amazing Man to his crew and patients here at the Huntsman Cancer Institute for so many years. we would always place bets on what time he would show up to work, fashionably late, but always had a smile on his face. His calm voice is what all of us liked the most, patients told him it would help relax them. We are all so very sorry for your loss. You are in our thoughts and Prayer's. He will be greatly missed.

Ken and I were so shocked and saddened to read the article in the S.L. Tribune. Dr Summers was one of our favorites. We have been going to see him since 2005. He took care of us and our Cancers since then, When you entered his office as we did in Ogden. Murray and at the University of Utah he treated you not as an old patient but as a friend. He was an excellent physician and we feel so fortunate to have had him in our loves. He would not rush you in and out but took time caring for you. We would talk about each of our families and trips we all took. We want you as his family to know how many many people he was the best MD they ever had. We feel for your pain and heartache and will keep you all in our prayers. We know he is watching over you now. God Bless. Ken and Ann Workman
