Vere Johnson Obituary

Vere Hodges Johnson was born Aug. 30, 1921, to Alphalus Ariel Johnson and Blanche Jesse Hodges Johnson in Beaver Dam, Utah. He passed away at his home in Providence on Sunday, May 25, 2008.
Vere had what he described as the perfect childhood, surrounded by a large extended family. He graduated from Bear River High School in 1939, Utah State University in 1944, and Case Western Reserve University Dental School in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1948.
He served two full-time missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; first as a young man in the North Central States Mission (1942-43) and later with his wife in the Frankfurt Germany Mission (1985-86). He was an active member of the church all of his life. Vere preached the gospel and lived its precepts faithfully.
He married Winifred Amacher in the Logan LDS Temple on Dec. 19, 1947. They were married 56 years when she passed away in March of 2004. They were the parents of eight children. Family was all important to them. Vere worked hard at his dental practice. He practiced dentistry in Roosevelt, Utah; throughout Florida; and in Logan for 35 years. His home was a secure place where all were well-fed and entertained by his quick wit. Learning and education were not only encouraged but financially supported.
He had many interests. He loved the gospel, people, Beaver Dam, family history work, his grandchildren's sporting events, good deals, buffets, building projects, Arabian horses, computers, but most of all his family. He valued education, hard work, thrift, integrity and stressed to the very end that "family is everything."
Grandpa's large smile, big laugh and constant joking were infectious and endearing to all who knew him. He had a nickname for everyone or a story he would tell to introduce his friends and family to others. His teasing indicated that one qualified as his friend. We've all been educated or enlightened by the wisdom that he freely gave. If it could be built, he wouldn't buy it. If he had to buy it, he found the greatest deal in town, and the story of its acquisition became legendary. But we all know the acquisition of which he was most fond - his dear wife and the family they built together.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred; his parents; and his brothers, Don and Thiel. He is survived by his children, Rand (Nancy) of Dripping Springs, Texas, Janice Stauffer (John) of Bountiful, Utah, Kathleen Thatcher (David) of Paradise, Utah, Paul (Jill) of Santiago, Chile, Bradley (Rosemarie) of Enumclaw, Wash., Todd (Diane) of Annandale, N.J., Scott (Melanie) of Snellville, Ga., and Robert (Mary) of Providence, Utah; 55 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Mae Zollinger and Renee Nielsen.
The family would like to sincerely thank all the friends and family who cared so lovingly for Vere, especially the never-tiring devotion of grandson Kent Thatcher.
Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, May 30, at the Providence 2nd and 3rd Ward chapel, 309 S. Main, Providence. Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 29, at the Nelson Funeral Home, 162 E. 400 North, Logan, and from noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Providence 2nd & 3rd Ward Chapel. Interment will be in the Beaver Dam Cemetery.

Dear Johnson Family,
I want to send my sincere sympathy to all of you. Dr. Johnson was a great man. Little did I know, 40 years ago, that when he and ReNae Gittens trained me to work in his dental office, that it would start me off on my life time career of being a Registered Dental Assistant. Dr. Johnson was a kind man, with a great sense of humor, and I feel very fortunate to have known him.
Best wishes,

Duane and Patricia Huff

Dear Johnson Family,
We met your father when he and your mother accompanied the Sounds of Zion on their tour of Poland. That was such a great experience and, afterwards, they always treated us like family. It was enjoyable to see them whenever our paths acrossed in later years. Bro. Johnson was a great man and he will be missed. We pray the Lord will bless you at this time of sorrow.

Dear Johnson Family

We would like to express our deepest condolences at this time. We appreciated Vere and all he did for us while we lived in the "really hut" in Paradise. We truly enjoyed our time there and the kindnesses both Vere and Winnie showed us while there. He was a great man and will truly be missed.
I'm sure his reunion with his sweetheart Winifred was a joyous one.
Again we express our love and condolences at this time to your family.

Dear Johnson Family,

As you well know, Vere is an incredible man. I was a witness on many occasions of his contagious laughter, smile. His wit, knowledge, and spirituality was amazing. If anyone could prove these qualities from the works of his own hands and those of his posterity, Vere and his wife certainly could. An incredible family!!!

I was able to know him with and through the Dave and Kathy Thatcher family. His home always had an incredible spirit of peace and righteousness! I express my deepest condolences.

His wife was always so kind and dear to me even though she may not have known me well.

May we all live from their example so that we may join them in the presence of our Heavenly Father, where I am sure they will be!!!

Love always,

Greg Neslen

I have so many good memories of Dr. Johnson through growing up with Janice in the Logan 19th Ward. He always had something fun going on and we were lucky to be a part of it. He was our family dentist for many years and he even made going to the dentist fun! Lots of love and sympathy to the Johnson family. We're thinking of you.

Doctor Vere was a true gentle giant and friend. He provided Arabian horse mane hair for my grade school paper mache mask, he salvaged my haircut from my mom’s gallant attempt, he cured my wife’s fear of the dental office visit, and was a true friend of my Father and Mother and their family. I have many fond memories of the jokes and pranks and good times that were shared with your family while groing up in Logan. May the Lord’s choicest blessings be with your family at this time. Sincerely Michelanglo

Dear Johnson Family,
It is with a mixture of sadness, gratitude and joy that I have come to view the passing of a great man and long-time friend, "Brother Vere". He was always a "champion for young men", among many other things and has certainly been a great influence for good in my own life. I am so grateful and feel very blessed for my association and experiences with your father, your sweet mother and your family. May our Heavenly Father comfort and bless your family at this time of temporary parting as you celebrate a life well-lived, of your father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
Sincerely,
Wimp

Vere was a wonderful man! The work he and mom (Faye Hodges Taggart) did in the last few years on Hodges Family History was invaluable. We'll never forget taking mom & Vere to Bear Lake several years ago and searching for and finding the old (Nathaniel Morris) Hodges Mill up laketown Canyon. Vere and mom were like kids in a candy store when we found it!! We love you Vere.
