Charles Wiggins Obituary

Charles Q. Wiggins, III
1936-2015
Charles Quintard Wiggins, III hit the longest drive of his life on January 9, 2015 and is resting with God on the 19th hole. Charles (aka Wig, Quintard, and Wiggy) was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Christmas Day in 1936 to Charles Q. Wiggins, Jr. and Margaret L. Wiggins. He is a direct descendant of Rt. Rev. Bishop C. T. Quintard, First Chancellor of the University of the South (Sewanee), and Benjamin Lawton Wiggins, Vice Chancellor of Sewanee. He attended Sewanee Military Academy and University of the South, Sewanee Tennessee. Was in the Marine Corps and actively served from February 1957 until January 1960. He was a wizard with words and writing and started his career at the Memphis Commercial Appeal and Memphis Press Scimitar. He was Alumni and Publicity director for Sewanee Military Academy; Asst., Director of Public Relations at Lykes Bros. Steamship Company in New Orleans; Vice President, Water Resources Congress, Washington, D. C. In 1972 he moved to Houston Texas as public relations representative for the "volunteer " U. S. Army recruiting program with N. W. Ayer & Son for Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana areas; he was Legislative Assistant to Commissioner Bob Eckels; Partner in McHale/Wiggins advertising and public relations agency, and owner of Landmark Advertising. He started the Rolling Fork newsletter in 1978 and was an active participant in Rolling Fork especially in the formative days.. He served as a director of Children's Drug Abuse Network; Board Member of the Local Board of the Selective Services System; GOP Precinct Chairman and Election Judge; and Charter President of the Northwest Village Optimist Club. Playing golf was his passion and he would play in any type of weather and at almost any time. He belonged to the Jersey Meadows Senior Golf Association, The Cactus Club and Houston Seniors Travelers League and was a member for forty years at Texaco Country Club. Wherever Wig traveled so did his golf clubs.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jude Boylan Wiggins; a son Charles (Chuck) Q. Wiggins IV, (Carol); two grandchildren Chris and Lauren and his cousin, Patricia Low. Though born in Tennessee and raised in New Orleans, he considered Houston home, but always loved New Orleans cooking and restaurants, especially R & O. He had a dry and quirky sense of humor and you had to know him to understand it. He held strong conservative political views and wasn't afraid to expound upon them with an attempt to convince you he was "right." He forever had a very warm spot in his heart for Sewanee, University of the South and he was in so many ways a southern gentleman.
Graveside services will be held at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038 on Monday, February 2, 2015 at 12:45 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held at the Rolling Fork Clubhouse, 9110 Rodney Ray Blvd, Houston, Texas 77040 at 2 p.m. All friends and family are invited.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Sewanee, University of the South, 735 University Avenue, Sewanee, Tennessee 37383-1000 or online giving at www.sewanee.edu in the name of Charles Q. Wiggins, III or to the charity of your choice.
