Marvin Moreland Obituary

Jon Marvin Moreland, Jr. passed away on Saturday, the 2nd of June 2012.
He was born on the 28th of October 1934, in Galveston, Texas. He was a graduate of Phillips Academy at Andover, Massachusetts, and Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, and after graduation served as an officer in the United States Army Field Artillery. His business career began at the U. S. Trust Company in New York and was spent mainly in Houston in the public finance area of the securities industry with the firms of: Moreland, Brandenberger, Johnston, & Currie; McClung and Knickerbocker, Inc.; Greer, Moreland, Fosdick, Shepherd, Inc.; Lovett, Mitchell, Webb, & Garrison; Masterson Moreland Sauer Whisman, Inc., and First Southwest Company.
Mr. Moreland served during his accomplished career as a Director of the Public Securities Association, a Trustee of the Municipal Advisory of Texas, a Member and Chairman of the National Association of Security Dealers District 6 Committee and Business Conduct Committee, and President of the Houston Stock and Bond Club.
Marvin faced each day with a spirited energy and optimism that led him to expect the best in every situation and which directed him to overcome difficulty. He had a warm, loving, outgoing personality. He once remarked that his life had been a series of nonrecurring fortuitous events. He treasured his family and friends and especially enjoyed his passions: the game of golf, his vacation home in the Virginia mountains, his Washington and Lee associations, and his Galveston heritage.
He was a member and former Vestryman of St. Martin's Episcopal Church and a frequent visitor at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Hot Springs, Virginia. He was a member of The Houston Country Club and the Homestead Golf and Tennis Club. He served on the board of the North Ridge Homeowners Association in Hot Springs, Virginia. He established the J. Marvin Moreland, Jr. '56 and Mary Louise Moreland '91 Scholarship Endowment at Washington and Lee, to help and encourage deserving Texas students to attend Washington and Lee.
He was predeceased by his father, Jon Marvin Moreland, Sr., his mother, Marie B. Hutchings, his stepfather, Robert Knox Hutchings, and his brothers by marriage, John Henry Hutchings, Sealy Hutchings, II, and Robert K. Hutchings, Jr.
Marvin is survived, and he will be forever loved, by his wife of fifty years, Jane Philp Moreland; his children, Jon Marvin Moreland, III, and his wife, Margaret Robertson Moreland, of Houston, Robert Edward Moreland and his wife, Inma Corral Moreland, of Los Angeles, California, and Mary Louise Moreland of Houston; and his grandchildren, Robert Leighton Moreland, Ana Louise Moreland, James Jon Moreland, Henry Mark Prendergast, and James Marvin Prendergast. Also surviving are his sisters, Ann Moreland Moss and her husband, William S. Moss, Jr., of Houston, and Jean Moreland Jones of St. Simons Island, Georgia; and his sisters in law by marriage, Brenda Levy Hutchings and Marcia Hutchings Edwards, as well as numerous treasured cousins, nieces, and nephews. Many special friends are counted as family.
The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to
Dr. James L. Pool and Dr. Clement A. DeFelice for years of care and concern.
The memorial service is to be conducted at two o'clock in the afternoon on Tuesday, the 12th of June, at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston, where the Rev. Martin J. Bastian, Senior Associate for Pastoral Care, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the adjacent Bagby Parish Hall.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Mobley E. Cox, G. Thomas Holtzclaw, Jr., William S. Moss, Jr., Roy M. Philp, Jr. Harry C. Webb, Jr., Richard C. Webb, and Bryan H. Wimberly.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions in Mr. Moreland's name may be directed to the J. Marvin Moreland, Jr.,'56, and Mary Louise Moreland, '91, Scholarship at Washington & Lee University, c/o Emily Graud, Washington & Lee University, 204 West Washington Street, Lexington, VA, 24450; or to the charity of one's choice.
