James Strickland Obituary

James Strickland
1929-2016
James Nelson Strickland ("Jim") 87, died peacefully on February 5, 2016 while recovering from surgery. He was born January 16, 1929 in Alexandria, Louisiana to parents Frederick and Blanche Strickland. He later moved with his family to Houston, Texas where he graduated from Reagan High School in 1948 and attended the University of Houston.
Jim was a computer Designer/Draftsman in the Oil Industry, receiving 5 patents during his career. The last 17 years he worked for Venturetech, up until the time he went into the hospital in the fall of 2015. He was well respected and loved by many, not only for his many accomplishments but for his gentle demeanor, his sharp wit and his great sense of humor. Always active, Jim enjoyed sailing, fishing, paddling, hiking and photography.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Janeth Strickland, his sister, Bernice Crockard of Houston, son, Jay Strickland (Barrie) of Houston, son, Andy Strickland (Elaine) of San Jose, CA, daughter, Sherri Heckendorn (David) of Big Sandy, daughter, Elaine Doering (Roger) of Dahlonega, GA, grandchildren, Kelly and Jason Strickland, Andrea, Alena, Amanda and Jonathan Carr and Natalie Carson. In addition to his parents and siblings, Jim is preceded in death by son Ken Carson (Melanie) of Glasgow, KY.
Jim met his wife Janeth 33 years ago and a wonderful romance bloomed into an exciting, fun-filled, adventuresome life hiking the trails and sailing the lakes of Texas.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of St. Luke's Hospital and Methodist St. Catherine's Hospital (LTACH) for their thoughtful care and concern, including the very brief but crucial time spent with Harbor Hospice.
A memorial service followed by a reception will be held Friday, February 19th, 12:30 pm at the Memorial Oaks Funeral Home Chapel, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079.
In lieu of flowers the family gratefully suggest a donation to the charity of your choice.
