Dear Erin and Nelson Family,
I had the honor of meeting Kathy in Italy 2 years ago...and I am forever changed. I have never met a woman more full of life and love. She was contagious. It makes me smile from my heart to think of her fire and zest for life.
I just found out about her death as I am not in contact with Erin as much as I used to be. My heart is with each of you as you approach this holiday season.

Dear Nelson Family,
I just learned of Kathy's death through an email from a Pershing friend. I have been living in Thailand for the past 4 years and had Kathy in my list of friends to whom I wrote, sending weekly tomes to this lovely country and adventures I experienced. Kathy always commented on them, often enlightening me to other things to do in the places I was visiting, having been a life long traveler herself. Her battle with her cancer was always seen as another adventure and her positive attitude uplifted us all. She will be sooooooooo missed and I know your hearts ache with her loss. My best to you all,

My thoughts and prayers to each of you. "Sloan" was a wonderful and special friend to me for many years. We shared many laughs and good times whether it was at school, when camping and traveling, or just sitting around at an infamous New Years Eve party. Family, friends and her students were important to Kathy; as a result, Kathy's personality, kindness and love for life is reflected in all of us who knew her.

I just heard of Kathy's passing today October 2. I was very shocked to hear. I was honored to teach with Kathy when she was first was hired at Pershing in the temporary buildings outside. We were in the same cluster. Kathy was always the first to get to work at 6:00 in the morning way before any one else was up. I knew she was there because a tiny desk lamp was on in her room while she worked. Her room was immaculate every day and the students and teachers all loved her. She made science a fun learning experience. Kathy made every one's day a delight. She left us way too soon.

I would like to send my condolences for your loss. I can definitely say, "She was a wonderful woman". Never had to worry about Kathy saying something was unacheivable. She pushed me in athletics, as well in academics. After leaving Houston, I have lost touch with all of you and will work on regaining that contact. She will never leave you hearts and memories. In memory and honor of my mother in law. She was and will always be remembered as strong in her convictions and for always taking every opportunity to live her life to the fullest as she thought was best. I vow from the day I married her son, Brent, and from the time I became the mother of her grandchildren, Bailey and Ethan, to live life as I believe God wants me to and to dare to love wastefully. I will keep her memory alive in my children and their descendants. I will always reach for the sky and never fear defeat.
May all who have been touched by her gift and love of teaching continue to pass her knowledge of science and adoration of culture laced with her graceful enthusiasm and character to all you encounter. Persevere in the face of adversity. Do more than what is required....do your best, if not better. Always have colored pencils and be creative in expressing yourself. Reward others when they succeed and help them if they do not. Make this journey worth taking.

Dear Don, Erin, Brent, and Derek,
I'm truly sorry for your loss. Kathy touched many lives, mine included. Although we lost touch many years ago, I thought of Kathy often.
We met in a freshman geology class at North Harris County College in 1982. I was just beginning college and Kathy was returning to school. Kathy became a close friend and role model to me. Later, she encouraged me to transfer to SHSU where she was already attending. Upon my graduation, Kathy opened her home to me. Living those few months with Kathy, Erin, and Brent is a treasured memory. Thank you Erin and Brent for sharing your lovely mother with me and so many others.

Dear Don, Erin, Brent, and Derek, after reading back through Kathy's guest book, it's easy to see that she lived her life the way God intended humans to live; wide open to learning and loving; dispensing caring and compasion to all she came into contact with. I so miss her. I have a picture of a very bald, margarita-drinking, smiling-into-the-face-of-the-odds, Sloan in a swimming pool tacked to the wall in my home office. THAT's the Sloan I know and love and admire. And will remember.

Kathy was one of those human beings that improved the life of all those who came into contact with her, pupil or peer - even though they may not remember that it was her that specifically taught the life lesson or that they were led by her example - for those of us who do remember all the moments we shared with her and all the good times we had, we will hold onto those memories for the rest of our lives and hope and pray that we can have 1/1000th the positive impact that she had on the generations to come.

While I didn't pursue a career in any scientific field, Ms. Sloan was so influential in my life because she taught me how to learn. I can honestly say that she was and is my favorite teacher that I ever had, at any level.
I'm sure she fought this cancer with all she had.
I remember her so fondly and am very sorry for the loss - the world has lost a great one.

She was our Ms. Sloan back in 1986-87 when I took her biology class at KHS. She was always so encouraging and patient to all of her students. I vividly remember the time she held an after-school picnic and introduced us to Mr. Don Nelson of Channel 13. She welcomed me back with open arms and had me speak to her class about college life at UT Austin when I stopped in for a visit. She was a positive influence to many and we will always have fond memories of her. She will be missed.

Ms. Sloan was my science teacher for 2 years at KHS. She was an amazing teacher and made Anatomy and Physiology so interesting. I enjoyed teaching with Kathy at KHS, and we missed her when she left. She was an excellent teacher and a fun faculty member - full of life! Part of her will live on in every student she taught! I remember hearing her voice on the air when you were stuck at the station and she was working at a shelter during the Flood of '94. She told you that she had given your pillows to the cause. Even though my family lived next door to your grandparents, I really didn't get know what a wonderful person your mom was until I took her Anatomy class in high school.Though my academic performance was inconsistent (at best), your mom always made me feel like I was one of her favorite students. I knew your Kathy over 25 years ago as Ms. Sloan then Mrs. Nelson; even then she to me was a highly regarded teacher who made a difference in learning for those of us at Kingwood High School who wanted to learn. Please accept my sincere sympathy. She was my science teacher at KHS in 1986 or 87. Although I do not remember all the enzymes, etc she taught, I remember the "life lessons" she shared in class. I'm sure my classmates would agree that her enthusiasm and energetic teaching style inspired many of us. She is one of the reasons that I recently had the courage to go back and earn my teaching certification (at the age of 41). Kathy was my AP Anatomy/Physiology teacher at Kingwood High School, 1987-1988. She was, without a doubt, one of the best and most influencial teachers from whom I ever had the honor of learning! I will never forget the evening, as the school mascot, Kathy put on my costume and cheered her way through a basketball game! It was a perfect example of the enthusiasm she had towards her students, and towards life. We all hope to leave a legacy behind when we are no longer here...rest-assured, she has influenced HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of young lives in endless, positive ways-mine included! I was a student of Mrs Sloan-Nelson's for my last two years of high school, and she has had a profound impact on my life and career. She had an amazing way of keeping everyday fresh, keeping science exciting for the entire semester. She could be academically demanding as a teacher, but always presented such difficult topics in a cheerful and energetic manner. You always knew that she cared deeply about you as a person, as well as a student. There is no doubt in my mind that without her guidance and inspiration I would not have entered my profession as an academic anesthesiologist. What an amazing woman and educator; I hope to give back a fraction to my residents and fellows of what she has given to me. My thoughts and prayers are with the Don and the rest of the family.

Cris and I had the pleasure of meeting Kathy many years ago at one of the Brautigam family functions. We enjoyed her company at many of these events both happy and sad over the years and have missed her terribly these past few years as she fought her courageous battle. We are saddened by the loss of such a wonderful lady. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.

Kathy was teaching at KHS when I started teaching there. What a "breath of fresh air" in education! She was an inspiration to students and staff. I was in awe of her endless energy, her knowledge, and her devotion to her students. You have to smile knowing that Kathy truly had a gift and made such a positive impact on so many people. My thoughts and prayers are with your entire family.

Erin, Brent, and Kelly just want to let you know that my heart is heavy and very, very sad to receive the news about Kathy. She was truly a gifted teacher, and just a down right fun person to be around. You may know that after teaching the 3 of you in Economics, I became a counselor at KHS.
In that job you hear "all" about the teachers; I can truthfully say that all of Kathy's students loved her - she was an inspiration. My thoughts and prayers are with you and with the Nelsons.

I have many fond memories of Kathy during our years as school mates at Bellaire Hight School. As is often the case with so many of us, we loose touch as the years pass but we always cherrish the memories that we carry for ever. While I will not be able to attend the celebration of Kathy's life on Saturday my thoughts will be with her on that day.

I am so, so sorry for your loss. Ms. Sloan- Nelson was one very special lady. She was my Anatomy teacher many years ago at Kingwood High school. She believed in me and and encouraged me to follow my dreams of becoming an occupational thearpist. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you right now. I will always remember her as my favorite teacher! She definitely touched my life and many, many others along the way.

Kathy and I go way back to our school days at Pershing. When we met up again as teachers at Pershing, it was too good to be true. The happiness I knew being in her presence is immeasurable. Each year without fail, she sent me an e-mail wishing me Happy Texas Independence Day. What a delightful person and what a blessing to me for many years.
