Arturo Volpe Obituary

Dr. Arturo Maria Volpe was born on August 24, 1952 in Naples, Italy to Wanda Basadonna and her husband Alberto Maria Volpe.
As a boy, Arturo attended the Jesuits' La Quercia in Florence for one year and then Institut le Rosey in Rolle and Gstaad, Switzerland until he took his high school baccalaureate under the Swiss/French educational system, "le bac." He enjoyed two "gap" years in London, traveling several times to India, before returning to Italy for a degree in Maritime Law from the University of Naples.
In 1978 Arturo moved to New York and then to Houston for a position in the shipping department at Conoco under the direction of Constantine Nicandros, and earned an MBA at the University of Houston. Subsequently he worked as an oil trader for private companies and, traveling often to South America on business, added fluent Spanish to his repertoire of superbly fluent English, French and Italian. He was comfortable in any setting in any country and could, for example, sit in a café in Paris switching effortlessly from speaking English with his wife Margaret to discussing the daily specials with the French waiter to reading the Corriere della Sera with his post-lunch espress. At his favorite bookstores on Boulevard St. Germain-des-Pres, La Hune and L'ecume des Pages, the staff thought he was more Parisian than they when he visited with them about Apollinaire, Rimbaud, Balzac and other favorite authors. And Herge; he had every Tintin book by the Belgian author published since he was a child.
Upon the death of his father in 1988 he returned to Naples to run the ship agency founded by his great-grandfather more than 100 years before. After living with Margaret in Naples and Monaco and his eventual sale of A. M. Volpe & Co. to the Morelli family, who have continued the business under the Volpe name, Arturo chose to return to Houston and follow his lifelong interest in fitness by enrolling at Texas Chiropractic College. He graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1998 and in January 1999 established what became a thriving independent natural medicine practice in the Rice Village, which then moved to Sunset Boulevard in 2003. Arturo was also certified by the Clinical Nutrition Certification Board (CNBC) of the International and American Associations of Clinical Nutritionists. For the last several years he served as a member of the CNCB Scientific Council.
As a doctor, his third and most satisfying career, Arturo was especially highly regarded for his work with children diagnosed with autism, ADD and ADHD. He will be remembered by the many hundreds of families he helped over the years, and by everyone who knew him for his wide range of interests, his expansive and detailed knowledge of all manner of subjects, his quiet but keen sense of humor, his innate intelligence, and his gentle and kind manner.
A natural athlete, he skied every day during Rosey's winter semesters at the Gstaad campus and was a tennis ace, but most of all he loved the water, sailing, and swimming. He enjoyed many wonderful times on Capri and in Monaco, the South of France, Zihuatenejo, Huatulco, Cancun, Acapulco, Costa Rica and San Diego. He was an avid fan of futbol. Then, at the age of 56, Arturo fell in love with running. He started with 10K races and half-marathons, and completed his first marathon in Chicago in October 2011. He had a perfect physical a month later in November, but was diagnosed with glioblastoma following a seizure in December.
Two weeks after brain surgery he was back at the office and being interviewed by Channel 2 News about the link between poor diet, food allergies and ADD/ADHD. Throughout 6 weeks of radiation and 18 months of chemotherapy that began in February 2012, he continued to run: eight half-marathons and two more marathons - Houston in January 2013 and Vancouver in May 2013.
He worked full-time until July 17 of this year and until just a few days before his last breath in August he was still speaking four languages, still making his funny jokes and plays on words, still enjoying his favorite dinners brought in from Prego and Canopy and Julia's and his morning blueberry scone from Starbucks, and still insisting the nurses take his blood pressure the "old-fashioned" way without the artificial aid of modern electronic readouts.
Arturo was preceded in death by his father and by his friends and brothers-in-law Michele Capodanno of Milan and Luigi del Prete of Venafro, Italy. He will be greatly missed by his mother Wanda of Naples and his sisters Dorothy del Prete of Venafro and her children and grandchildren; Fiammetta Pasca di Magliano of Naples and her husband Manuel and their children and grandchildren; and Gigliola Capodanno of Milan and her children and grandchildren, as well as by his former wife and friend of more than 25 years Margaret Lawler and her (and his) extended Lawler/Sullivan family; his "brother" John Painter; his assistants Allison Medford Plesko, Diana Ramirez and Jeanie Friedman; the many adults, children and entire families whose lives were transformed by his knowledge and dedication; friends who were always important to him no matter how many years had passed since the last time they were able to spend time together; and countless others with whom he crossed paths over the years.
Messages to Arturo's family and Margaret may be sent to [email protected]. Contributions in his honor may be made to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Boulevard, Houston, Texas 77030 or the Autism Research Institute at www.autism.com.
As he requested, there will be no memorial service, but Margaret will host a reception on Saturday, September 21 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Rice University's Cohen House to celebrate his life and his legacy. He wished for his ashes be scattered to the four winds to become a part of nature so that he will always be free and, therefore, at peace.

I cannot believe it´s been 11 years. It doesn´t seem possible. We think and talk about you so often. We still need you now. We so wish you were still here. I think often about the last few weeks we were at your office. We were doing hbot and the seal spilt. You had to have it sent off to be fixed.
I remember prior to that you had been on "vacation." I remember asking you if you were ok, (you had a large scar on your head), and you said, something like "oh yes, not to worry, I´m just fine." I remember calling some time in august to ask if the HBOT was back and fixed only for Allison to tell me that you were gone. I nearly dropped the phone. I still keep in touch with her. We all miss you and the staff so much. You were an excellent doctor and an even better person!! Rip Dr V.

Hello to all! Dr. Volpe is missed every day. How he conducted his practice and treated his patients was a rare gem. His knowledge is missed every day. I often think about medical matters from the viewpoint of what would Dr Volpe think of this? Dr. Volpe saw my son Samuel who has severe autism a few weeks before he could no longer work. He interviewed us for almost an hour and treated us with so much respect and kindness. He wanted to know all about my son's history and about his adverse reactions to certain immunizations. He is one of two medical professionals that ever wanted to talk about this. Sam is almost 18 and close to 6' tall. This is owed to the advice Dr Volpe gave us on diet and supplements. So on behalf of Sam and our family. Thank you Dr. Volpe.

Yes, we think about Dr. Volpe all the time and we talk about him and his knowledge he imparted on us. People are starting to see that what he taught was the right way and I love sharing what he taught with others . A favorite story of ours is when my mom and I were sitting in his office and he was telling us what we should do with my son, and my mom and I started talking (we talk over each other loudly) and Dr. Volpe just smiled and leaned back in his chair and then he said "I love it when you come see me, you remind me of my family", and my mom said "is that a good thing or bad thing" and he said "It´s a good thing, when we get together, we start talking to each other from across the room. I will be talking to my cousin across the room, and my mother will be talking to a family member in between us and we all get louder to hear each other, and you two remind me of my family." If I could go back to visit with anyone it would be Dr.Volpe and I would sit and learn as much as I could from him, if only for a day. We have yet to meet anyone like Dr.Volpe and we have searched and searched. He was truly one of a kind.

Hello to all. I am a bit late, sorry. Dr. VOLPE, had such a big heart. His mission was love. He did it in his life and practice. He saw my non verbal severely autistic son Samuel, just weeks before he(Dr. Volpe) passed away. The more I think back to that visit, I can conclude I was part of a miracle. He knew he was going to be passing soon, yet that did not stop him from caring so much for my sick son. That takes a huge amount of love integrity and courage. Knowing you will be passing on, yet still giving it your all. I don't know if I could do that! But Dr. Volleyball did and that was a miracle. His family and friends were so blessed to know him as were his patients. Thank you Dr. Volpe! Always grateful.

I wanted to thank Dr. Volpe for helping me years ago, with my stress, depression, and anxiety after the death of my Dad, who died at the age of 36 from SLE Lupus. I was 16 and a swimmer and couldn't function until Dr. Volpe told me to start taking Brain Link. Thank you, and see you in heaven one day.

Sorry so late. A first class human being, with a heart bigger than Texas. He helped our Samuel age 16 now with hbot and B vitamins. As I write this Sam and I are in the backyard. Sam is exploring and I am grilling using wood from our local trees. Such a simple experience, but such simple experiences were treasured by Dr. Volleyball. I think that's what made him such an outstanding human being. So many simple experiences with family and friends. Thank you sir for all that you did for my son , for humanity.

Many thanks to Elizabeth and Yas and Gerardo and all who have written to remember Arturo since he left us nine years ago today. I have forwarded your messages to his family, and we all appreciate your tributes to him as he was - a good and kind person, a man of integrity who was full of life and humor, and who dedicated himself to helping others. He is missed every day, but his memory is a blessing.

I wrote on this tribute page back in 2014 after learning of Dr Volpe´s passing. I get notifications when new posts are made so felt compelled to write again to thank him so much for saving my son´s life. My son, Grant, is now 26 and is a CPA in Washington, DC and has his masters degree from University of Virginia but it was very tough going when he was just a little boy and I drove several hours to Houston to see Dr Volpe. Through his diagnosis and treatment plan, Grant started to talk, walk, play and learn so much better and after several years got rid of all of his toxic issues that were causing all of his problems. I guess I am sharing this again because I know THOUSANDS of children and others were helped by Dr Volpe and I want to let Margaret and his other family and friends know that "he lives on" through those he helped so immensely. I know you miss him so. God bless.

Mr. Arturo Volpe was the real deal medical professional! My autistic son and I met him in the summer of 2013, the last few months of his life. Although he was sick, you could not tell it. His smile and truly caring nature( our initial interview was about 45 minutes) he wanted to know all about my vaccine injured son, Sam. Sam is now 14, about to he 15, mostly nonverbal, but has made great progress with picture exchange program. The b vitamins that Dr Volpe have helped him tremendously. The HBOT treatments we got helped my son alot. We will never forget this rare and unique medicine man whose heart was bigger than Texas. Thank you Mr. Volpe. Sam and Dad

I worked for Dr Volpe around 2002/2004 and learned so much from him about vitamins, herbs and natural health. I googled him in the hopes of reading about his opinion of Covid and the vaccines. Sad to learn he is no longer with us and we can’t benefit from his guidance. My sympathies to Margaret and his family

Dear Dr. Arturo Volpe,

I was so fortunate that you could help my son during your consultations in Monterrey, Mexico. Since he started with your treatment his behavior changed for good dramatically. He was 9 years old at that time and only ate five foods: milk, tortillas, beans, bread and potato. It took less than a year when he was practically eating everything, it was a real MIRACLE! You changed his life but also my whole family life.

I still talked about you and your knowledge and share what I learned from you during the 5 years my son had appointments with you. He is now 21 and doing great!

Rest in peace Dr. Volpe.
Monterrey was blessed to have you there helping our kids.

My dear friend it's been a while since you passed. I just want to say I always refer back to your knowledge. I was able to learn so much as you helped our precious baby boy Ronan get well after severe reactions to immunizations and antibiotics when after countless doctors they made me think I was crazy. You were so kind and helpful at calming a young scared mommy. You are talked about in our home quit a bit and through all of it Ronan is a very strong healthy 13 year old who is also a heck of a basketball player. He eats so clean and I believe it's because his pallet from the time he was a baby was pure foods. He loves to cook also. All of this is from you taking the time to help us and I just want to say thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I wish he could meet the Dr. who helped him get well. He doesn't remember being ill but he knows you from my stories.
My mom has been ill the past 4 years with a mysterious illness no one can figure out and we wish so badly you were around to help her. Houston was blessed to have your presence and knowledge.
Love to you and Margaret.

To Mrs. Volpe...
I am Anne Jakus's mother (Carlyn Jakus's grandma). Anne was helped by Dr Volpe - with all her children's problems - more than by anyone else. I personally knew him only very casually, but had such a lovely mental picture of him through all the help he gave to my daughter. I wish to tell his family how very sad I am for them.......I am privileged to have known such a wonderful man - even if only very casually. My heart-felt sympathy goes out to all his family - and to those who loved him.
Most Sincerely,

This area is not near enough space for my expression as to how thankful i am to have had such a wonderful Dr.for our son. Our son was going into the 6th grade when we first met Dr.Volpe. Dr.Volpe discovered the Red dye 40 causing our son's anger problems when we thought he was being defiant all those years. He discovered other problems and always had a solution. Dr.Volpe always had a smile and you could tell he was very sincere and loved helping/curing people. Our son is 20 now and yesterday we decided at the last minute to drop by Dr.Volpe's office without an appointment not knowing of his passing! Dr.Volpe, you have blessed so many people outside mainstream medicine and we all will miss you tremendously. With much sadness, LaDonna and family 9/28/13

My only regret is not having met you sooner. Even in your toughest times, you were a joy to be around. It was my pleasure meeting you and taking care of you. Ciao Bello! ;-)

Margaret, Arturo did what he was meant to do. We were privileged to have known you both and learn from him. God bless you and may you be granted the peace that comes in time from the memories.

We were so fortunate to have known Dr. Volpe and been his clients. He did more to help our son than any other professional, and went on to treat every member of our immediate family. We trusted him completely, and will miss him greatly - his quiet assurance, confidence, and humor.
