John was one of my professors at UH. I am saddened to hear of his passing. Not only was I lucky enough to know him, but also to have spent time with him and two close friends at Gaia 2 & 3. During those visits we would have lively discussions of art, architecture and social subjects. Those talks were thought provoking and insightful and on one occasion continued over dinner at a nearby restaurant. He also came to my place for one of our dinner parties. It was a great time and a fun evening. He was an inspirational educator, motivator and his passion for Japanese and architecture history made his courses among the best at the university. I think of those times fondly and of the imprint he made on my career and likewise the careers of many talented architects. My condolences to his family.
