David Cornell Obituary

DAVID MAYO CORNELL of Aspen, Colorado and Houston, Texas, passed away on Saturday, the 29th of November 2008, at Houston Hospice after a valiant near two-year campaign against renal cell carcinoma. He was 73. Mr. Cornell was born June 12, 1935 in Elmira, New York to Margaret Agnes Mayo and Homer King Cornell. His first memory was riding in the rumble seat of a two-door coupe into Rutland, Vermont where he would spend his early childhood. As the winds of war began blowing, his father joined the Navy as a commissioned officer at which time his family moved to Washington, D.C. where Mr. Cornell completed his elementary schooling. After WWII, Mr. Cornell and his family moved to San Antonio, Texas where Mr. Cornell attended Mark Twain Junior High School and Thomas Jefferson Senior High School. His activities included serving as President of his Eighth and Ninth Grade classes, the male lead in his junior and senior year high school plays, Commander of the ROTC in his senior year after serving as summer camp ROTC Commander of all San Antonio area high school ROTCs at Camp Bullis, Texas, just north of San Antonio. During his senior year, he was awarded the Bettencourt Award, which was representative of the top ROTC cadet at Jefferson Senior High School. He also served as Chaplin of his senior class. Mr. Cornell graduated from The University of Texas in 1958 with a BBA degree in Engineering Route to Business and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. While a student at the University, Mr. Cornell was elected Engineering Assemblyman, Cactus Goodfellow, President of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and Vice President of The Texas Cowboys, an honorary service organization. Mr. Cornell received his MBA in Finance and Economics from the University of Houston in 1968. Mr. Cornell's active duty assignments with the Corps of Engineers included Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri; Ft. Belvoir, Virginia; Fort Hood, Texas; Fort Bliss, Texas; and Fort Polk, Louisiana. He retired as Captain in 1966. Mr. Cornell founded Cornell Companies (NYSE: CRN) in 1991, which at the time of his departure in 1999 represented annual revenues in the corrections industry of approximately $300 million and operations in five time zones, fifteen states plus the District of Columbia. In 1996, the year of the firm's Initial Public Offering, Mr. Cornell was selected as Dillon Read Venture Capital's "Entrepreneur of the Year." Mr. Cornell also founded Cornell Human Services in 2005, which was dedicated to the field of mental health. He deeply regretted that his health prevented him from accomplishing in mental health what he had achieved in the field of corrections. Mr. Cornell's business career also included Tenneco, Inc. as an Assistant Treasurer, where he later served as President of Tenneco Financial Services. He also served as Chief Financial Officer of Becon Construction Company, wholly-owned by the Bechtel Group; President of Philadelphia Life Asset Management Company, and Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of eGovNet, Inc. of Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Cornell was a former President of the Houston Society of Financial Analysts and board member and Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Keystone Insurance Companies of Pennsylvania. Additionally, Mr. Cornell served as Chairman of the Central Division of the United Fund of Houston, board member of the Houston-Galveston Food Bank, board member of Goodwill Industries of Philadelphia, chairman of a subcommittee of then State of Texas Governor Bill Clements' Task Force on Asset Mix and Investment Alternatives. He is a former guest lecturer at the University of Houston and the University of Wisconsin. Mr. Cornell is a former Board member of the Texas Research League, the Aspen Valley Medical Foundation and the Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet. He is a Life Member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Mr. Cornell had an enduring love for the mountains. He climbed Long's Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park three times and on July 21, 1989 stood with his daughter atop Mt. Kilamanjaro, Africa's tallest peak at 19,340 feet. He and his wife Linda enjoyed their many travels. Mr. Cornell was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving friend and wife, Linda Judge Cornell; his daughter Mary Catherine Cornell and her two sons Christopher and David of Pittsford, New York; his son David Mayo Cornell II, his wife Jennifer and their two daughters of Houston, Texas. Mr. Cornell is also survived by his brother Col. Robert King Cornell (Ret.) and his wife June of Columbia, South Carolina; his sister Patricia Celeste Cornell of Willits, California; and his former wife and mother of his children, Mary Jane Burkhalter Cornell of Estes Park, Colorado. Mr. Cornell touched the lives of so many more people than could ever be listed here. He was loved and respected by classmates and friends, by corporate peers and competitors, by staff and service personnel. One's position in life did not define a barrier to him; he spoke to everyone with the same level of respect and personal connection. David always endeavored to find the one area of commonality with someone . . . it could be sports (his favorite topic), politics (his second favorite), business, religion, or the meaning of life and death. He could and did -- talk with anyone on any topic. He was an amazing man . . . he will be missed terribly by so many near and far. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at half past one o'clock in the afternoon, Wednesday, the 3rd of December, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6800 Buffalo Speedway at Holcombe. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Norman L. Berkman, M.D., John E. Dominy, David Howe, Dan B. Howe, Peter A. Leidel, Gibbs Macdaniel, Thomas Rathjen, Ben A. Reid, J. Craig Stephens, M. D. and Douglas Teegarden. On a later date, a memorial mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aspen, Colorado, with a private family interment at Red Butte Cemetery. The family wishes to express its deepest gratitude to all the staff of Houston Hospice for its extensive, compassionate care to Mr. Cornell and all the family during the most difficult of times. For those desiring, the family requests with gratitude that in lieu of flowers, contributions in honor of Mr. Cornell be directed to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX, and/or "First Tee at F. M. Law Park" c/o Houston Parks Department, 2001 Kirby Drive, Houston, TX 771019.

David was a dynamic individual with a tremendous drive to succeed in all his undertakings. His door was always open, making him one with his team at Cornell Companies. I will always remember the day I walked a new employee into his office to meet him. He invited her to sit down at his little round table where they discussed the company, her background and role for a good 20 minutes or so. David gave me a book "The Man Who Listens to Horses" that I will always treasure. A great read about a man much like David.
Please accept my warm regards and sincere sympathy at David's passing.

Heaven's gain is certainly a great loss to so many on earth. Cornell was one of the finest persons I ever worked for and a true caring friend. He treated all with respect, and his ethics were impeccable. He accomplished so much in his time on earth and still maintained his high standards.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the entire family.

Although I never had the privilege of meeting David in person, I feel like I knew him anyway just because of all the wonderful things Linda told me about him through the years. Linda and I haven't seen each other in years, so I especially enjoyed receiving their delightful Christmas card every year!! I know that Linda and his family and friends will certainly miss David......but what an amazing man he was and what an outstanding legacy he leaves behind for all of us!

David was definitely the heart of Cornell. I had the priviledge of working at Cornell when David was there. I have to say that the company was not the same when David left. The caliber of people who surrounded him were second to none. The "old days" at Cornell was a memorable time in my life. My heart and prayers go out to Linda and his entire family.

My condolences to Linda and the rest of the Cornell family on the loss of David. I worked with him for a couple of years before he retired from Cornell Companies and I'll always remember his kindness and open door policy.

I remember one Christmas when our department rented a bus to look at Christmas lights around town and we stopped by the Cornell's house to sing carols. David was out there thanking everyone for coming by. It was a fun time for all.

A wonderful person, who made a difference in this world, will be greatly missed.

He exposed me to many people and opportunities that had a profound impact on my career. I will always be very grateful to Mr. Cornell for his generosity. My prayers go out to his family.

I had the good fortune to work with David for a number of years in the field of privatization. A field he pioneered. He taught me a great deal. A businessman who could be fair and compasionate and still be successful.

Our condolences to Linda and David's family over the loss of a truly unique and always gracious man. The time we spent with Linda and David on several Colorado skiing trips were amongst the most memorable of our lives. David raised the bar in everything he attempted to accomplish and in so doing gained the respect and admiration from everyone. Though he is no longer amongst us, his legacy will last for years. May GOD comfort all of the family.

David really made a difference in so many lives. He was genuine and welcomed others into his world. And, through him, many lasting friendships were made. Some of us still get together for our "Cornell Ladies' Dinners", even though we no longer work with Cornell Companies.

I had heard about David and Linda from my parents in Aspen. When a bear damaged their home in the mountains, I took some photos and brought them by the office. This was my introduction to David Cornell. He brought me into his world and it was a wonderful business relationship. More important, it became a lasting friendship.

I can see him at ease on the trading floor of the NYSE. He was kind enough to let others share this amazing experience. I will never forget him and he left this world a better place than it was before.

I pray that the Lord give the Cornell family peace and comfort knowing David is now with Him in heaven. I had the honor of working with David at his company, CRN and he was absolutely the man described in this obituary. He was definitely the heart of CRN and had the hearts of many around him. My sincerest condolences for the family's loss.
