I enjoyed working with Dr. Thornby because he was not only incredibly intelligent, but also so kind, humble and funny. He was a great teacher, but was always learning new things himself. I am using the statistics he taught me every day at the VA. I will always remember him fondly as a kindred spirit and unique person. We will all miss him very much.

I didn't know my uncle all that well, but of the few times we met, he was always affable, clever and humble. He was a very good man, and I know he was well-liked by all who knew him.

It was an honor to be one of Jack's friends and colleague. He was thoughtful, generous, and kind. We worked together for more than 30 years and I greatly benefited from his intellect and humanity. It has been a bad 12 months for Sleep Gators but I will miss Jack the most.

To Jack's family:

Jack was a dear friend and colleague for more than 30 years. As a dedicated academic he was ever helpful to all his colleagues at Baylor. A member of our research team once remarked: "he is the best and most affable biostatistician I have ever encountered."

Jack was both a genius and a humble, simple man. He did things great and he did things little. From running a marathon to working a crossword puzzle.

I wished I could have known him. My daughter wished she could have know him.

Marye,"Dahlin,"

Twenty-eight years ago, we suffered the tragic and painful loss of our young mother, Barbara. I wished for my broken-hearted father to be able to move on and continue his life with a new family, to receive the love of a woman who would cherish him as we do.

You found each other. You helped him recover from heart surgery and into the champion runner, affectionately referred to as "Forrest Gump". You became the most wonderful and devoted friend he could possibly have. You will always be in my life and my prayers.
I love you, "Sweetheart"

Dear Mary and family,
Dr. Thornby will always remain an amazing guy in my memories of him. He was devoted to you, Mary and his family; and loved his work in statistics and his hobby of running. He had a great sense of humor, often laughing at himself trying to figure out how to use the copier or fax machine. He and I had a common bond because we both grew up in the same area around Winona MN/LaCrosse, WI and being able to recall some familiar places from the past was fun and interesting. I extend my sincere sympathy, my thoughts and prayers are with you in your loss. Dr. Thornby was a true gentleman!
Sincerely,
Mary Abbott, Research Service, Michael E. DeBakey VAMC
