Martha Anne Webb Nelson Martha Anne Webb Nelson (Mrs. John E.) died Sunday, 21 November 2010. Born 18 March 1921, in San Antonio, Texas, Martha Anne was the only child of Roy Worsham Webb and Bernice Esther Witcher, both from Grayson County, Texas. She graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1938 and entered Rice University as a member of the Class of 1942. She left Rice to do wartime work first at Great Lakes Steel and then at Shell Oil. Married to John E. Nelson, Jr. at Trinity Episcopal Church in 1948, Martha Anne then focused on raising her family. She served with her husband as co-Presidents of the PTA at Pine Shadows Elementary, Spring Woods Junior High, and Spring Branch Senior High schools. She was also active in the Delphian Society, the altar guild of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church and as a den mother in the Cub Scouts and Brownies. Widowed in 1963, she worked as Assistant to the Vice Principal at Spring Branch High School 1963-1969. She then went to work at Andrews, Kurth where she was legal secretary to Mr. Leon Payne and Mr. Dexter Peacock, among others. She retired in 1996 and spent her remaining years enjoying the Astros and Yankees games and other sports.
Martha is survived by her son John E. (Jay) Nelson, III and daughter-in-law Anna Hathaway McKee and step-grandson Sam McKee, and her daughter Anne Webb Nelson and son-in-law Ronald D. Conaway, along with many cousins.
Visitation will be at Earthman's at Hunter's Creek from 7 pm ? 9 pm Wednesday, 24 November. A private
committal service Friday morning will be followed by a memorial service at 2 pm on Friday 26 November 2010. She will be buried with her husband and parents in the family plot.
Friends desiring to make contributions in her name may direct them to Rice University Annual Fund or to a charity of their choice.
