T. Benning Obituary

Mr. T. R. Benning Jr., 89 of Atlanta died March 10, 2011. Born on May 27, 1921 in Atlanta, GA. He was the first son of Theodore Russell & Gertrude Landon Benning. T. R. graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Architecture Degree.
He was called to active duty during WWII with the 254th Engineer Combat Battalion in Newquay, Cornwall, England in October 1943 and was assigned as the Commanding Officer of 3rd Platoon Company B of the 254th. In late May, of that year started the preparation of materials, equipment, and armament for the invasion of Europe on Omaha Beach on D+1 and participated in the assault landing. He was wounded in action on combat patrol and evacuated to an army hospital in England. While hospitalized he met his future wife, 1st Lt. Loretta Margaret Serey an Army Nurse.
He returned to the 254th Engineer battalion in November 1944 in the Ardennes Mountains of Belgium at the time of the Battle of the Bulge and assumed Command of the 2nd Platoon Company B. After VE-Day journeyed to England to marry Lt. Loretta Serey in Kiniminster England in June 1945. Mr. Benning separated from active service into the Army Reserve and returned home to Atlanta. T.R. founded and incorporated Benning Construction Company.
The Company joined the Georgia Branch AGC in 1954, T.R. Benning, Jr became very active in its work serving on its apprenticeship committee, labor committee. Joint AIA-ACG liaison Committee and its membership committee, and participated in the National AGC from 1966 until the present time.
Served on the National Committee from 1967 to date. Fellow of the American institute of Construction and its National President 1989 ? 1990. A Certified Profession and in 1993 a founding member of the A1C Construction Certification Commission, and until his death was a member of its Board of Governors. Participated in the Construction of Industry advisory Committee of Auburn University Construction Science Program from 1978 till 1987 and received an award for dedication to the department.
Mr. Benning was pre decedent in death by his first wife Loretta Serey Benning and his brother, Frank Benning. Known to his friends as TR, he is survived by his current wife: Maria Cabelleda Benning, daughters: Margee B. Bright-Ragland, and Serey B. Andree, son: T.R. Benning III all of Atlanta, 5 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, sisters: Gertrude Dackers of Houston, TX, Margaret Stephener, Bertha Buffington, and Louise Hall.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 14th at 1 o'clock at Oglethorpe Hill chapel with a reception following the service. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 4 to 6 o'clock at H.M. Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill, 4550 Peachtree Road NE Atlanta, GA 30319, 404-261-3510.

A great and wonderful man has left us, but he will never be forgotten. I am honored that our paths crossed. His strength, integrity, morals and beliefs shaped my life, and I am so thankful to have known him. Rest in peace, Mr. Benning, I will miss you very much. My thoughts and prayers are with Maria, Ted, and the rest of the family during this very difficult time. Ana Macias
