Eddie Stevens Obituary

Published by Houston Chronicle on Jul. 25, 2012.
Eddie "Big Ed" Stevens entered this world in Galveston, Texas on January 12, 1925. He went to be with the Lord, surrounded by the love of his family, on July 22, 2012 at the age of 87. His boyhood dreams came true when, at the young age of 16, he was signed to an amateur baseball contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers. A few short years later at 20 he made it to the major leagues and his world was opened to all of the benefits a long baseball career, as a professional player, coach and scout, would give him. For Ed the only thing greater than baseball was meeting and being in love and marriage with Margie Saxon for over 69 years. With the eternal love of Margie by his side, Ed had three daughters, two who sadly preceded him in death, Janice Kay and Barbara Sue. Ed is survived by Margie, his daughter Vicki Lynn Porter, his son-in-law Jim Porter, six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, with the thirteenth on the way, and one great-great grandchild. While Ed will be missed greatly by his family and friends he made all of them smile with his jokes and love. And those smiles will never fade when thinking of him. Services for Eddie will be Thursday, July 26, 2012 at 11:00am with a visitation from 9 until 11 Thursday Morning.

Margie and family, I was so sad when I heard of Eddie's death. It was a pleasure for John and I to know you both when we were at Braeburn Valley Baptist Church. We enjoyed the visits in your home and at lunches after church. My grandchildren were thrilled to meet you both and to get signed baseballs and pictures from Ed. I thank God that we were honored to be your friends. John and Ed are praising the Lord now and maybe talking music and baseball.
