Don Yoder Obituary

Published by Houston Chronicle on Jun. 13, 2014.
Don R. Yoder passed away June 7, 2014. He was born in Iowa City, Iowa on August 17, 1931, son of Francis and Dorothy Yoder. His early years were spent in Harper, Kansas. He graduated from the School of Nursing in Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
He was a Registered Nurse (RN) and specialized in Anesthesia (CRNA). After the Army he married Barbara Bond on October 19, 1962 and was married for 40 years until Barbara passed away on November 11, 2002. Don worked as a Registered Nurse until he retired in 1998. Don and Barbara bred and showed cats. Don was a Cat Show Judge and judged cat shows throughout the United States and once judged a cat show in New Zealand.
He is survived by his brother Kenneth Yoder, many friends from a daily gathering of retirees (a gathering they called early Mass), and close friends John Martin, Russ Williams and close companion Patrick Karr.
In addition he is survived by his dogs Woody, Baldwin and Devon. Don and Devon can be seen periodically on Animal Planet's show "Animal Cops Houston" where Don announces " I don't' care much for people who do not like animals." Don and Barbara donated their bodies to the Baylor College of Medicine for students to use in training for the medical profession. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday June 18, 2014 at 7:00 PM at Michael's Outpost Piano Bar where Don helped start a weekly pot luck/sing-along and where the retiree "early Mass group" meets daily. There will be plenty of food and music. Michaels Outpost is located at 1419 Richmond Avenue (713-520-8446). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Houston SPCA, 900 Portway Drive, Houston, TX 77024-8022.

My mom graduated from the General Hospital School of Nursing with Don back in 1954. She says he was a great guy.

Just wanted to share this photo of Don's graduating class from the General Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1954. My mom was also in this class.

Don was one of the kindest people I ever met, with a wicked sense of humor and a wonderful sweet heart. He will be sorely missed.

Don Yoder was one of my very first friends in the cat fancy. We started our hobby back in the late 50s.
Don started while living in the Kansas City area He went on to become an Executive Officer in ACFA where he was also a judge. In 1966 he resigned from ACFA and came over to the Cat Fanciers Association and was immediately accepted as an All Breed Judge. Don served as CFA's Gulf Shore Regional Director from 1973 until 1979. In the early 60s he married Barbara Bond, a cat fancier from CA and they both eventually settled in Houston.

Don was definitely an asset to the entire Cat Fancy and loved by all that were lucky enough to have known him. May he rest in peace.
Respectfully submitted,
Willa K. Hawke, Chair
CFA Ambassador Program

A most delightful man. We were connected through our love for cats and a mutual friend in Dorothy Baker who also at one time was a Judge in ACFA and later came over to CFA. He was an early pionneer in the Exotic breed of cats. He loved the brown tabby Exotics and worked with them. It was due to his love of this breed that I began to breed them also.

May he rest in peace.
