John Parkinson Obituary

Published by Houston Chronicle on Dec. 13, 2015.
John Thomas Parkinson III
1943-2015
John Thomas "Tom" Parkinson III age 72 of Sugar Land, TX , devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and loyal friend passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 8, 2015. He was born on September 4, 1943 in Drew, MS.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 50 years, Mary Lou; daughter, Aleisha Parkinson Power and husband, Eric; grandsons whom he adored, Ethan Forrester Power and John-Thomas Coleton Power (Coleton); life-long friend, Lt. Col Nathan Norman Miller; close friend of the family who had become like a son, Anthony John Antonidis; and brother, Terry Lee Parkinson.
Tom was born and reared in Drew, MS where he spent his childhood years hunting, fishing and enjoying the outdoors with his life-long friend Nate Miller. He graduated from Drew High School, attended Mississippi State University and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was very involved in Boy Scouts and shared that passion with his grandsons.
He worked for Litton Industries/Ingalls Ship Building in Pascagoula, MS in the mid 1960's. Tom made his career "in the steel business". He briefly left the steel industry to become a small business owner in Mississippi. He was involved in sales for the steel industry for more than 40 years for various companies where he developed many lifelong friendships with people across the industry. He loved his job and continued to work up until the day before his death.
He enjoyed spending time watching his grandsons at their numerous sporting events and attending activities at their school. Tom had a great love for all things outdoors. He shared his passion for hunting with Eric who in return has passed on that hobby to Ethan and Coleton. This summer he enjoyed a family vacation to his favorite getaway at Bull Shoals Lake, AR where he shared his love of trout fishing with Ethan and Coleton and was privileged to tow Aleisha one last time behind his beloved MasterCraft ski boat that had been lovingly restored by his son-in-law, Eric. For many years he would make annual trips to Bull Shoals with his friends where countless memories were made and numerous stories were told and embellished.
A memorial and celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at The Settegast-Kopf Company, Funeral Directors at Sugar Creek.
In lieu of flowers, please celebrate Tom's life and legacy by supporting one of the following organizations: Troop 838 (Tom Parkinson Memorial Fund) or Homes for Our Troops. As an Eagle Scout, Tom took tremendous pride in the fact that Ethan and Coleton have become so involved with Scouting. The Memorial Fund in Tom's honor will help fund scholarships for boys who otherwise may not be able to afford the fees associated with Scouting and its camping programs. Send checks made payable to Troop 838, Tom Parkinson Memorial Fund in the Memo line, c/o Aleisha Parkinson Power 3104 Robert Dr., Richardson, TX 75082.

Mary Lou and Aleisha, Dave and I have been out of the country for the past month and just heard about Tom. We were so shocked. Please accept our sincere condolences. We cannot make his memorial but please know if there is anything we can do to help you in this difficult time we will be available. A funny memory: Dave has never forgiven me for the white elephant gift exchange where I ended up giving Tom that apron with the unique appendange!

Mary Lou,
I did not know your husband Tom, but I know you. I can't imagine the pain of losing such a wonderful person. It sets you back on your heels and knocks you over. From what I can tell, he was one of a kind. But you have so much of a loving family, an enormous group of friends, and I'm sure you still have that spirit I knew many years ago. Your family, your friends, and your faith will carry you through all this. Loss is such a difficult emotion to understand and harder to come to grips withI would encourage you, your family, to mourn his passing, but celebrate his life which was obviously full of love and devotion. And remember you were part of all that. You basically grew up together. Your children and grandchildren seem to be mirror images of Tom & you. You will do well Mary Lou. It's in the stars. My condolences to you and your family.

Mary Lou, I wish I had known Tom better, but he was always so quiet and reserved when he was around all of us. Maybe because he was one man among many women although I know that was his nature. I am amazed he was so active in scouting. Your two grandsons certainly had a tremendous role model. I know you and Aliesha will keep his memory alive for them. Please call if there is anything I can do to help.

Mary Lou and Aleisha ;
My thoughts are with you, there are no words I can say to ease your sorrow. Tom was more than a true friend, but also a great mentor. Tom is one of the reasons that I am the person I am today. I could go on about the days from C-L Metals to eating pizza late one night somewhere down a dark gravel road in Arkansas. Those are memories I will always have for myself. He will truly be missed by all.

Tom was one of the few people that I had the pleasure of getting to know working in the steel industry. It is because of him (and so many others gone before him) that I have to thank for being where I'm at today. Thank you Tom for sharing your knowledge and light with an 18 year old kid trying to learn the ropes. I'll miss you as I know so many others will too.

JT - Mr. P. - Tom - Dad
I knew Tom by many names, but "Dad" was my favorite. I had the pleasure of knowing him for over 20 years of dating and marriage to Aleisha. He inspired me in many ways, but the one I am the most grateful for is teaching me how to be a loving and caring father who teaches love of the outdoors to our children. I love you dad. I will miss you dearly.

Daddy, I know that you are in a much better place and that God showed you great mercy with your quick passing, but you have left a hole in my heart that no one else will ever be able to fill. I will miss you forever, but I promise to remember all of the happy memories we made together. Rest in peace sweet daddy!
