Roger Harris Obituary

ROGER GLEN HARRIS, beloved husband, father and friend to so many, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday December 23, 2007. He was born November 22, 1940 in Merkel Texas. Roger lived a full and meaningful life. He collected many athletic awards while attending John H. Reagan High School in the Houston Heights. Before graduating in 1959, Roger was a 3 year letterman in football 2 year All District, and All American. His senior year, Roger was the Football Team Captain, and voted the Most Valuable Player. Roger attended the University of Texas, Lamar State University, and Sam Houston State University. He earned a Degree majoring in Physical Education and a minor in education, and then later returned to school to receive his Master's. Roger made a career of coaching and teaching. He was a favorite teacher and coach at Fonville Junior High School, Albert Thomas Junior High School, Ross S. Sterling High School, Sam Houston High School, and Alief Hasting High School. He coached Football, Basketball, Track, and Tennis. His teaching credits included Texas History, American History, Physical Education, Biology, and Drivers Education. Roger then moved into administration in Alief, first becoming Assistant Principal, then Principal, and then Coordinating Principal of Alief Hastings High School. In 1989, Roger took the position as the Director of Transportation, and eventually retired from the district as Assistant Superintendent of Support Services for A.I.S.D. in 1997. Roger is preceded in death by his loving parents, Loyd R. and Mary Ellen Riggin Harris, his adoring in-laws Tommie and Frances Maddi, and his older brother Jerry G. Harris. He is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Mary Frances Maddi Harris, and his son, Thomas Harris. Tommy, a Houston Police Officer was the pride and joy of his father's life. Roger also leaves behind his sister, Betty Sue Leveritt and her husband Al of Houston, Texas, His brother Warren Harris and wife Claudette of Merkel, Texas, and his sister in law Wanda Pillows of Apple Springs, TX. "Uncle Roger" also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and a legacy of loyalty and love. Roger will also be greatly missed by his faithful dog "Buster". Roger dearly loved his family, and his family was always his highest priority. His family included so many, and if you were his friend, then he considered you part of his family. This also included the doctors who so gently cared for him. Roger was unwavering in his convictions, and a natural born leader. He had a great sense of humor and loved to share it, even if you were an unwilling participant. Roger will be missed by all, but those who were fortunate enough to truly know him are comforted and understand that little went unsaid, especially in the miraculous last year of his life with us. He was happy, full of love, and he truly appreciated his many blessings. We are at peace knowing that he is making new friends and reacquainting with old ones, while he continues to watch over us from above. We love you Roger! Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12,800 Westheimer. My prayer for you both is for strength, comfort & the knowlege that Roger was the best man that he could be. I know he will be missed by everyone who's lives he has touched. You are in our prayers.

As we all try to begin the next phase of our grieving process, it is encouraging to remember all the wonderful things that have been said and written about Uncle Roger. The legacy he left is not in dollars, but in relationships with family, friends, co-workers and everyone with whom he came in contact! One thing I forgot to say as others talked about his smile and always making people smile/laugh is that I will forever be indebted to him and the late Edgar James for literally putting a smile on the face of a 16 year old girl over 40 years ago!

Mary & Tommy, our prayers are with you as you trust God to see you through this valley. The great thing is that on the other side of the valley is a mountaintop...and God will not just see you there, He will take you there! We love you.

To the family of Roger: I was so saddened to here of your loss. I attended Reagan with Roger and considered him a good friend. He always greeted everyone with a warm smile and made you feel good just to be around him. Although,we lost touch over the years but we were always able to renew our friendship at the Reagan reunions. I can tell by the many postings in this guest book that he had a wonderful influence on many lives. God bless all of you .....I will miss him also.

Dad, I just want to say thanks for being the man that you were. Thanks for setting a good example and for straightening me out when I didn't quite follow your example. Thanks for loving me and mom and for always taking care of us. Dad, thank you for instilling the same values and morals that you were brought up with. Dad, I would not be who I am today if it weren't for you. Thanks for allowing me to spend the last week of your life with you. I hope that someday I can be half the man that you were. This is going to be a hard ride, but we will make it with Gods help. I will be grieving myself, but I promise I will do everything I can to take care of mom for you. I love you and I am going to miss you deeply. Thanks again for everything!

Mary & Tommy
It's with great saddness and sorrow that I learned this afternoon of Roger's death. The last time I saw Roger was at the Wendesday afternoon Heights lunch bunch sometime back. He was one of those special guys that even though you had not seen in a while, you always counted as a special friend. Those very special years at Reagan High School created living friendships in all of us. I know I will see Roger again in Gods knigdom. God bless you and Tommy.

Mr. Harris was a coach and Asst. Principal to me as I attended Alief Hastings 72'- 77'. I'm sure I am one of many past students that may be seemingly unknown to the family, but none the less saddened to hear this news. I know Mr. Harris remembered me, because we spoke briefly at our '77 class reunion a few short years ago. I feel compelled to note that Mr. Harris has been in my thoughts since I left High School. He made a positive memory that has been a part of my life since high school. I am surely a better man knowing Mr. Harris. I will always hold him in the highest regard. God bless his family at this time of loss, yet heaven's gain.

My husband and I are in Houston for the holidays visiting with family, and I happened upon the Houston Chronicle to learn that my former principal, a true leader at Alief Hastings High School for many years, had passed. It is with great fondness that I remember him, and I wish to express my deepest sympathies to the Harris family. Roger Harris was a kind, caring, and truly devoted individual. He is greatly missed.

Roger was a friend whom I got to know well while attending the Reagan Wednesday Lunch Bunch. We talked often about football, and I found that he and I had lots in common. Roger was a great guy, and I will miss him greatly. It is hard to believe that he passed away so suddenly just a week or two after I last talked with him. May GOD BLESS HIM and his family. I have lots of sympathy for them at this time.
