Mr. Beam's name up yesterday on a facebook page, "You know you're from Sugar Land if you remember...." Someone mentioned some of their favorite teachers and of course Mr. Beam is always at the top of the list! I have such fond memories of Mr. Beam as I was in Student Council for all four years of HS and Cheerleading for two. He even chaperoned our senior trip to Cancun in spring 1990! Mr. Beam was well liked and respected by all of us at both CHS and KHS! He is definitely missed.

I can't believe it has been a year already since you left me. It doesn't feel that long. I still find myself wanting to call you since I haven't deleted your phone number from my phone. I miss you terribly and can get by knowing you are looking down on me and helping me do the right thing. I love you and until we meet again.

Jimmy, we went back far...to the days of Temple High School where we met and became friends. Remember the trips to Six Flags with March of Dimes TAPS Group?! I remember driving to Spring to visit you after you moved away. My mom epspecially enjoyed her visits with you when you would came back to Temple. Thank You for saving my life when we where in Hawaii...I tell that story often! You were my first love and though I only knew the boy...it sounds like Mr. Beam was a pretty special man. Mrs. Johnson at Temple High (our History teacher) must have done a heck of a job teaching you history! To your family, I remember you all fondly and to your partner my deepest sympathy.

We are saddened by Beam's death. To Beam's family, we are better because he has touched our lives.
Beam's contributions to students are immeasurable as he was a very integral part of Texas Student Council, especially District XIII.
You are a bright "Beam" of light. You gave so heartily and exuberantly your time and talents to so many.
Thanks for making a difference in Phillip's life. Your legacy will live on in him and in all the students that you have molded as a Teacher, a Sponsor, and a Mentor and especially as a Friend.
"Well done, good and trustworthy servant; you have shown you are trustworthy in small things; I will trust you with greater; come and join in your master's happiness."
Thank you, Jim Beam.

Well Beam, you've gone on ahead of the rest of us, but you've left so much behind for us all to cherish. It was truly a pleasure and honor to have known you as a co-worker and friend at Kempner. Your spirit was so bright, it was hard NOT to notice your honesty and purpose. God Bless and keep you James Grant Beam.

Mr. Beam was one of those teachers that you have in life that you never forget. He always had his students best in mind. He was always concerned for us, and he was an example to us all. I was lucky to have Mr. Beam not only for History/ Economics at Kempner High School, but he was also my PALS Mentor for the '96-'97 & '97-'98 school years. I never had the opportunity to thank him for the impact he made in my life. I wish I had. I am the person I am today because of Mr. Beam. He taught me life lessons in his classroom that I use every day of my life. I will miss you Mr. Beam.
To those family members and loved ones of Mr. Beam, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I had always asked Cindi Cornelius on "how is Mr. Beam doing?". I never forgot him since I graduated from Clements HS (Class of 87). I was a freshmen running for Student Council and thought how "cool" is this to have a teacher and the student council sponsor with such a great sense of humor. I stayed in student council throughout my high school year since he was such a great leader and motivator. Mr. Beam always made me laugh about something and he will be very missed.
My prayers and thoughts are with the Beam Family.

Jim, I knew you before you became, 'Mr. Beam' and 'Beam', to me, you will always be known as 'Pledge'. Remember the crazy pledge antics, the Tub Pulls (for the American Heart Association) especially the one where you and Maurice drove around all day to pick up money while the rest of the chapter stood out in the street holding cans for donations, and just the general good times? It's amazing to me that we all survived to carry on another day! I'm not going to quote all the stupid sayings that we created but anyone from our pledge class who reads this, knows what I mean and will smile and probably laugh out loud.
You were destined to make an impression for life. This is so 'Not the Way! because you left us too soon.
I love you and will miss you...

To the family of Jim Beam:
My heart felt sorrow for your loss of this wonderful person. He was a light to all who knew and loved him. Just the mention of his name brings smiles and fond memories of his life and the fun times that Tina Sarratt and myself spent with Jim in our student council adventures. He always made us laugh and brought fun to any event. We are going to miss him greatly! Much love and sympathy for the passing of this wonderful friend.

Students and teachers alike fondly referred to Jim as "Beam." The word "mister" had been lopped off, as he was just Beam to us all. When I first started teaching with this man 20 years ago, it was evident that he was an incredible educator and well respected within Fort Bend ISD. Now that I reflect on his legacy, it's very clear why we all called him Beam. It's because he was an absolute "Beam of Light" to all who knew him.

Mr Beam- it has been over twenty years since we last spoke, but not a day goes by that your wisdom and guidance still resonate in my life . Your love for history and politics fueled a fire to make a difference that still burns brightly in me to this day. You were unmatched as an educator and I often speak of you to others when they ask where I get my love of history and politics from. The lives you touched these many years is testament to your spirit and love. My the Lord watch over your family during this difficult time and know you will be missed dearly.

Beam,
I cannot even begin to express how saddened my family and I am. To think that almost 8 years ago that we met. I was sitting amongst the crowd at Rice University during a D-13 STUCO summer camp just trying to wrap my mind around all of the knowledge that you had to offer. I must have answered your questions a million times. I remember with great detail attending your summer camps and listening to you speak. I also am so thankful that I had the opportunity to sit on the District 13 executive officers board with you as a guide. I am sure that I speak for everyone this morning when I say that you have touched my life with a very heavy hand and you will be missed. I am most sad not for you leaving us but for the fact that your work had the ability to influence so many in a positive way and there will no longer be an opportunity for people to shake your hand, hear your kind words, and truly understand what a blessing to academia you have been. I consider myself and the rest who have had the pleasure of meeting you to be very lucky. I am sure that your influence will live on James Beam an I hope that the efforts made in your short life continue to touch people for many many years to come.

I’m fortunate to have shared with Jim how grateful I am for the incredible impact he made on my life. He shaped and molded me into the woman I am today. He was my teacher, sponsor, chaperone, mentor, co-worker, gossip buddy and most importantly friend for 12 years.
He developed my passion for politics, leadership and education. I’ve always said, “I want to be just like Mr. Beam when I grow up.” As an educator, I am in awe of how he devoted his entire life to his students and I will forever be thankful that he saw something special in me. My vast memories of our friendship will last forever because there will always be a place in my heart for Beam.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the Beam family. He has been one of my oldest and dearest friend for over 25 years. We met the first year at Stephen F. Austin State University in 1980 as freshmen in Dorm 13. We became quick friends and became fraternity brothers through Alpha Phi Omega. He was my big brother and he became my mentor when it came to things such as leadership, friendship, and service. After graduation, we still were even better pals for we were educators in different school districts. I will always remember our conversations about food, clothing, cars, and people(in general). I will miss him dearly and I know that he is looking down on us having an opinion about anything and everything. May GOD bless and keep all that mourns for weeping may endure for a night, but joy will come in the morning light.

I first met Jim when he was the PALs teacher at Kempner HS and I was the assistant principal at Townewest Elementary. His PALs class tutored our students on a weekly basis and Jim's enthusiasm and concern for kids was evident through his students. Always with a smile on his face, he developed friendships easily and I feel privileged to call him my friend. When he moved to Student Support Services and I moved to Fort Settlement, Jim never ceased to amaze me with his immediate response whenever I would call him for help with any program or need. It went beyond that, however--Jim was a great human being, cared for others, and anyone who knew him felt his genuine character. What a contribution he made to education-- his legacy will live on through the lives he touched.

Jim,
Words can not express the loss we feel with your passing. You touched people even if they had not met you. I remember so well our first meeting, and the friends we became. You gave me the courage to help students lead when I wasn't sure I could do the job. I know I will hear your voice, everyday when the students want to do different things in Student Council, it will say its okay they will do fine. I will miss you, but I have the memories to last until I see you again. Thanks for being mine and Tara's friend.

The true mark of a hero and mentor is the legacy of life that he leaves behind. As a student of Mr. Beam's (class of 1992 IH Kempner High School) and a student council member, he touched our lives, educated us and mentored us. Hi smile and zest for life was infectious. As a teacher now, I only hope to impact my students as he has impacted me. It is evident that the legacy of life, passion and love that Beamer leaves behind in us, will forever live on. Thank you for your love of life, thank you for your love of education and thank you God for gracing us with his mark forever. We love you Beam, rest peacefully with your father, and keep watch over us. We will miss you and will forever be grateful for your time in our lives.

Beamer, what an impact you had on so many lives! I am forever thankful to God for sharing such a wonderful human being with us. My FONDEST memories from high school (Clements '88) are filled with your smiling face and "one-liners" that STILL make me giggle. You were not just another teacher to me, but a true friend who was willing to accept us, faults and all! I hope my children have the opportunity to meet and learn from someone of your caliber in their high school years! My heart hurts today, but I find some comfort in knowing that I will see you again one day and you are in a place of such joy and peace. God Bless You, Beamer! We will all miss you!

My prayers go out to the Beam Family. Many of those who have spoken before me know the spirit, enthusiasm and guidance that Mr. Beam had in touching the lives of his students. His mentorship allowed me the opportunity to be one of those students who were not left behind, moreso he taught me how to move ahead. His leadership has touched so many lives not just in Houston but throughout the State of Texas and beyond. In 2007, I had the opportunity to speak at an Economic Summit in the Northwest Independent School district were they are currently raising funds to host the 2008 National Student Council conference. I was nastalgic and graced by the opportunity to meet these students as they plan for this major event and not 5 minutes into a conversation was Mr. Beam's name mentioned for his stewarship and guidance as a model of student leadership that has been recognized in Fort Bend County over the past 20 years. Mr. Beam will always be apart of my life and many generations that will follow. He will be dearly missed! Alvin Jackson, 90-91 Student Body President, IH Kempner High School.

Mr. Beam was one of the greatest teachers I have ever met. His heart was there for the students. He was so caring and involved with each one of us. I will always be grateful for the senior trip he chaperoned us on to Acapulco. The memories will last forever.
There are people you meet in life that make a lasting impression and set a great example. Mr. Beam is one of those people that will never be forgotten. He was always there for the students to help them with issues, mentor them, sponsor them, and teach them. He touched and molded the lives of so many young people.
Everyone always came to him for everything, and he was always there to lend an ear to every student. Unfortunately, we have had several deaths of students/friends as well, and I know when Mr. Beam got to heaven he went and checked on each one of his former students. That is what kind of teacher he was. We will greatly miss you.

I knew Jim for many years as a Student Council Advisor, District Advisor and TASC Consultant. His wit, humor, and craziness will be what I remember about him. He was a prankster and he could tell the biggest lie and keep the straightest face and absolutely NO ONE would ever suspect it was him in the first place. There is a light missing from the world now, and my heart is full of pain, mostly for me and all of us who are without him now. I know Jim is fine; he is with friends, his grandmother Rose, and he is not sick anymore. If there is a Prada store in heaven, he has already found it. He has probably already started a foundation for democracy, too, and is counseling the souls of the young people who have crossed over. Some people believe that souls on the other side are Guides for those of us still in body. I beleive this. And, if this is indeed true, Jim will probably volunteer to watch over all of us and the whole rest of the world. He could be a harsh critic, but something aout his light made you want to do better, not to give up. Everytime I start to get upset about his passing I already hear him telling me, "Well, you're gonna just have to get over that". I will try, Jim, but I will never forget you, and I a hope that you are watching over me, because I will always listen for your voice. I know you are okay now, but I will always miss you, and always, always love you.

He Only Takes the Best
God saw you were getting tired,
and a cure was not to be,
so he put his arms around you
and whispered, "Come to me."
With tearful eyes we watched you,
and saw you pass away,
although we loved you dearly,
we could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
hard working hands at rest,
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the best.

I am not complete without you Jimmy. I was so proud of you and loved you for who you were. You were my rock. I know you are with Ma now and without pain and will always be my side. I loved you more than anything in this world. We had a unique bond that will never break. You always brought out the best in everyone. You were an exceptional person and I know God is putting you to good use. Wait for me as we will be together again and will share eternal life together. I love you and miss you terribly.
Your loving sister,
Claudia
