I wrote the following article last Thursday in tribute to Howard for our company newsletter. I want post it here so that others can see how much he meant to me and to our company:
"In Memory of Howard Cantwell
A Message from Larry Schmidt, Houston Branch Manager
We are sorry to report the passing of Howard Cantwell, who lost his battle with cancer on September 30, 2009. Over his 22 years at CNA Surety, Howard held several managerial positions, including branch manager of New Orleans, Dallas and Houston, as well as serving for a few years as Regional AVP.
Howard retired at the end of 2007 and worked as Bond Manager for Swantner & Gordon Insurance Agency for the last 18 months in the Houston and Corpus Christi areas. Howard was well known and well respected in the surety industry in Texas and Louisiana, and had many surety friends all over the country. Anyone who knew him will tell you that he was the consummate Southern gentleman, with a battery of sayings that made one take a double take most of the time and a sense of humor that was about as dry as South Texas. He was definitely one of a kind, and will be greatly missed by many whose lives and careers he influenced.
He is survived by his wife Ann, his first wife Judy (with whom both Howard and Ann remained close), his son Howard IV, and his two brothers, Wes and Kim."

Ann, I worked with you at CNA. I left CNA in 2001. I wanted to let you know that you and Howards family are in my thoughts and prayers. Although I didn't really know Howard very well, I do know and remember well how in love you became with him.
God be with you and Howards family.

To Ann, and the Cantwell family,
I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Howard for a little over a year and a half. He could always make me smile with his great sense of humor. I will truly miss him, but will have fond memories to brighten my day. You are in my prayers.

Howard will certainly be missed. I always enjoyed the time I spent with him either at a "SOFA" meeting or on the golf course. His passing is not only a loss to his family and friends, but also to the surety industry. Ann, prayers for you and your family and wishing you peace in the days to come.

Howard defined the word "smooth" and his even keeled manner made him a pleasure to work with. He deserved a longer life, but certainly enjoyed the life he was given to the fullest with Ann and his many friends. We appreciated their opening their home to the SAH after our golf outing. His loss leaves a big void in our industry. We will miss him.

To Ann, and Cantwell family,
I was heartbroken to hear of Biz's passing; and I am so, so sorry for your loss. Wesley had said that not surprisingly, as in life Biz fought the good fight, all the while maintaining his strength and dignity.
You and the entire Cantwell family are in my thoughts and prayers.
Love, Angie
