THOMAS LOBER Obituary

THOMAS ROBERT LOBER, a gentle soul, born on May 5, 1959, passed away November 8, 2009, after a brief illness. He was a beloved Father, Son, Brother and Uncle. Tom is survived by his children, Amy and David Lober; his mother, Claire Lober; his brother, James Lober and wife, Melinda, and their children Courtney and Peter Holcomb and Eric Schmidt; sister, Margaret Sweeney and her husband, Peyton; sister, Susan Parent and her children Robert and Nathan; his Uncle and Aunt, James and Lois Lober; numerous caring cousins; and ex-wife and very good friend Lisa Hardcastle and her husband, Bob. He was pre-deceased by his father, Robert Toch Lober.Tom is a graduate of Texas A & M Maritime Academy and received his Master of Marine Science from Maine Maritime Academy. For several years he worked with his father in the offshore marine industry at State Boat Corporation. In 1992, he founded Star Fleet Entertainment Yachts, the first major commercial entertainment vessel enterprise on Galveston Bay. Star Fleet operates a fleet of five vessels for private and corporate charter and public cruises from its marina in Kemah, Texas. Tom was actively involved in the promotion and development of the Clear Lake Area.Tom had a zest for life and enthusiasm for learning new things and meeting new people. He was famous for his sushi parties, cooking large quantities of food and exciting travel. He traveled extensively with David and Amy, including trips to Asia, Europe, the Bahamas and Australia. During his last days, the family was comforted in knowing that Tom had a full life, and had, in fact, completed his bucket list.Tom was a wonderful boss and business leader. Star Fleet employees sent many sentimental letters to his family expressing their love for him. He was actively involved with the Vistage Group of business associates. With them he worked to expand and develop his business, and also supported his fellow group members in the business challenges they faced. Always a savvy businessman, Tom played a mean game of Monopoly.Tom will be cremated and returned to the water that he loved so much in a private ceremony on Sunday, November 22, 2009, followed by a reception for all of his dear friends and family at Star Fleet Marina, 280 Grove Road, Kemah, Texas, at 2 o'clock p.m.Donations in Tom's memory can be made to the Galveston Bay Foundation.

Dear Jim and Lober Family,

While I did not have the pleasure of knowing Tom, Jim and I were high school classmates. Please know my thoughts and prayers have been with each of you since hearing of Tom's passing.

I cannot image the loss of a child, or a sibling since I've not experienced that. However, my late wife, Ann was also taken early, at the age of 51. The only words that are appropriate are I'm sorry.

I'd like to share a couple of thoughts that may provide some comfort. The first is an excerpt of Ann's Life Tribute I wrote and delivered at her funeral.

"Several months ago my mother shared her thoughts of when her mother, my grandmother died, that I have embraced and found to provide great comfort. She said, “As a Christian I believe that after mother drew her last breath here on earth, the very next breath she took was in heaven.” As a Christian I believe Ann, and Tom, had that same experience.

And:
The LORD comforts his people and will have pity on those who suffer. (Isaiah 49:13)

If you'll celebrate a marriage anniversary alone this year, [God] speaks to you.
If your child made it to heaven before making it to kindergarten, he speaks to you. . . .
If your dreams were buried as they lowered the casket, God speaks to you.
He speaks to all of us who have stood or will stand in the soft dirt near an open grave. And to us he gives this confident word: "I want you to know what happens to a Christian when he dies so that when it happens, you will not be full of sorrow, as those are who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and then came back to life again, we can also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him all the Christians who have died" (1 Thess. 4:13-14).

Prayerfully,
Bill L. Olson

Tom and I went to Texas A&M together. He was a happy-go-lucky soul, one that could bring a smile to anybody he met. I remember driving him home from Galveston and seeing all the strange clay figures that his father created, and I knew then where this fellow cadet got his since of humor. It must be familial.

Tom was and will always be a wonderful, loving man in my mind. I will truly miss this creative and unique person.

I knew Tom many years ago when we were at TMA together. He had a great big smile as a young man and an enterprising spirit even then. What a nice guy he was. My condolences to Lisa and his children.

"Gentle soul" is the perfect description of the Tom I remember from many years ago at Kinkaid. How very nice to know that he, and his infectious smile never changed.

Amy & David,
I am truly saddened with the loss of your father. Working with Tom on the boat was always fun. He always treated me well and we would poke fun at each other. I always enjoyed working on the boat with him and with the Star Fleet family because that's what we were...a family.

My prayers are with you--Myra Flud

I’m sorry to hear of the loss of Tom. I remember him as friendly guy that was always smiling. As a freshman, I remember that he would take the time to help underclassmen. I never worked with him professionally, but I’m sure he was an asset to the industry and fine example of how Seaaggies have made this a better world.

What an honor it was to have known and worked closely with Tom and his sales team this past summer. He and I talked just a few weeks ago. What a shock to know he's gone. My life is richer for having known Tom. What a great human being...and astute businessman.
