Clay HUNT Obituary

HUNT
Clay Warren Hunt, a war hero and giant-hearted humanitarian, died in Houston, Texas on Thursday, the 31st of March 2011, at the age of 28.
He was an adventurer who experienced more, and gave back more to his country and his fellow man, than most men accomplish in a full lifetime.
Clay grew up in Houston attending Spring Branch Schools - Rummel Creek Elementary, Memorial Middle School, and was a proud graduate of Stratford High School. He was a solid second baseman from Tee-ball to Pony League, and an accomplished junior golfer. However, his real passion was football and his fifth grade team's win of the Tully Bowl gave him great joy. He also enjoyed playing for Stratford and "just being a part of a great group of guys" on the team during his senior season of 2001.
Clay received an Associate degree from Blinn College in College Station, and attended Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California.
Following his heart, Clay joined the United States Marine Corps in May of 2005, completed the School of Infantry in 2006, and shipped out to Iraq in January of 2007 as part of the Second Battalion, Seventh Regiment of the U.S.M.C. While on patrol in Anbar Province, near Fallujah, he was wounded in a sniper attack, earning a Purple Heart. Clay recuperated in 2007, and applied for and graduated from the Marine Corps Scout Sniper School in February of 2008.
His scout sniper teams shipped out to an area near Sangin, Afghanistan in March of 2008 as part of NATO's multi-national force deployed against the Taliban in southern Afghanistan. Clay's unit returned to the states in October of 2008, and he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in April of 2009.
Clay cherished his time in the Marine Corps and the unconditional and absolute bonds of camaraderie that he built with his band of brothers in Iraq and Afghanistan. He often wondered why he survived when so many close friends and others paid the ultimate price for our nation's freedom.
Clay continued to give back to ease the suffering of others in January of 2010, when he and Marine brother Jake Wood and others founded Team Rubicon, an early response team for natural disaster relief. Clay and Team Rubicon entered Port-Au Prince, Haiti one week after that country's devastating earthquake, and immediately established field medical facilities, and secured transportation to those facilities for thousands of injured Haitians during a month-long stay in that ravaged country. Team Rubicon was on the ground saving lives long before the Red Cross and other institutional organizations were up and running. Clay found his true calling for service in the chaos of Haiti, and his warrior mentality along with his compassion for others were the perfect combination to deliver "hands-on" medical and other humanitarian aid to those so desparately in need.
Clay also went to Chile in 2010 with Team Rubicon to aid earthquake victims in that nation, and returned to Haiti in June of 2010 on a follow-up mission. He also "felt the pain and did something about it" of his fellow veterans by participating in four Ride2Recovery challenges to raise money for struggling wounded veterans across the U.S. Additionally, he helped lobby Congress on behalf of Iraq-Afghanistan Veterans of America for better and more timely delivery of benefits for our veterans of these two conflicts.
Clay had a smile that would light up a room, and his boundless energy was his greatest asset. No family could have had a better son.
Clay is survived by his mother, Susan Selke and her husband Richard, and father, Stacy Hunt and his wife Dianne, all of Houston; his maternal grandparents, Bill and Muriel Knotts of Huntsville; his sister, Allison Hamilton and her husband David of Houston; his beloved niece, Annabelle; his four step-sisters, Lindsay Akhtar and her husband Jehan of Dallas, Erin Moses and her husband Bobby of Houston, Amy Stephens and her husband David of Denver, and Lauren Hendrix of Austin; his step-brother, Stephen Hendrix and his wife Ricki of Houston. Clay was loved by his aunts, uncles and cousins, Cindy and Bill Knotts and their sons Brian, Brad and Blake of Colleyville, Marilyn and Rick Terrell, their son Ryan Terrell and his wife Brooke, and their daughter Meredith Bell and her husband Lance, all of Houston, and John and Janice Knots of Huntsville.
Clay was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Warren and Merlyne Hunt of Houston.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Steve Cragg, Youth Minister of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, Jake Wood and the other Marine brothers, all of whom remained steadfast in their efforts to help Clay overcome the grip of depression that finally overtook our beloved son. Clay knew Christ and is in a better place.
A memorial service celebrating Clay's life is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Monday, the 4th of April, at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, 12955 Memorial Drive in Houston.
Immediately following the Service, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Clay's name be directed to Team Rubicon, Inc., P.O. Box 7476, Santa Monica, CA, 90406 (www.teamrubiconusa.org); or to Ride2Recovery, 23679 Calabasas Rd., #420, Calabasas, CA, 91302, (www.ride2recovery.com).

Clay, I just saw your parents on the Rachel Maddow Show.... You are in my prayers along with all other veterans dealing with the pain you once had.

You are appreciated, your life is still worth so much.
I pray the act named after you will pass in the Senate. I pray your parents hard work will continue to pay off. The awareness being raised is amazing.

I pray for your family. And will continue to admire their strength. I hope your memory will live on to help the many veterans who aren't appreciated as they should be in our country.
Thank you.

So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

December 7, 2014

I first learned of Clay while researching a paper for school. I have read so much about him and his life through the interviews with his family and friends. I feel blessed to have come to know his story, I am so deeply touched by it and feel I have come to know him in a way. The book I read was The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien; I feel that Clay carried so much himself. His big heart felt perhaps too much, too strongly, but that is a great virtue. Ernest Hemingway once said “The best people possess a feeling for beauty, the courage to take risks, the discipline to tell the truth, the capacity for sacrifice. Ironically, their virtues make them vulnerable; they are often wounded, sometimes destroyed.” Clays life has had such a profound effect on so many people and all of the good acts and deeds in his honor are something I am sure he is very happy about. I am certain that he is with the lord, in a better place, looking down and protecting everyone! I can not fully express my great sympathy for the family and friends. I can not imagine losing my son. I will keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers. I wish Susan and Stacy the best with your efforts in Washington. I believe that through the stories we share and retell our loved ones live on. God bless you all. If there is anything I can do, please do not hesitate.

So long lives this, and this gives life to thee." -Shakespeare

Dear Hunt and Selke Families:
Words cannot express the gratitude we all feel to your dear son Clay as well as our profound sadness at your loss. May we all do everything we can to support any and ALL efforts to prevent the loss of any servicemen and women who selflessly gave their lives and happiness to keep our country safe and free. My heart has broken learning of your loss and the losses for so many other families. I hope you feel the love of many and prayers for healing, if that is possible..

I am deeply sorry for your families loss. I want to thank you for your son, brother, nephew, uncle, and grandchild 's service to our country. Reading Clay's obituary it was easy to see he was a man of selfless serving for our country as well as helping other countries following natural disasters. I have two brothers that served in the Middle East. One brother now works as a Chaplin for a base in Tuscan. He has had our family pray frequently for those who's pain after the war has left them suicidal. I know he has lost men he knew with no warning. I will continue to pray for some peace for your families. I hope you take some comfort in knowing you raised Clay to be a believer and the hope of reuniting one day. My brother has shared that there are many who are not. God Bless you all!

Clay, I just hear about Team Rubicon, from the Katie Show and your name was mention as one of the co-founders. When I looked your name up on google I realized that I heard of you before, your mother was on a talk show discussing PTSD. It broke my heart to hear your story then and again today when I read it once more. I had a deeper feeling this time, I am so sorry you could not find your way out of your depression, but that being said you have help so many people before your death and even more after your death. The organization that you helped co-found is wonderful, I see it being one of the major organization in the future. Good Bless and Rest in Peace, Marine.

Mom and Dad:

You raised such an angelic soul. We were blessed to have been touched by Clay: always giving, always loyal and never to be forgotten.

Do not shame or guilt yourselves over Clay's passing. I suffered with depression since I was a youngster. Each day was a struggle to stay alive as the unrelenting suicidal thoughts plagued my day dozens of times and oppressive self hate destroyed all that was me.

There is nothing my parents could do in the shadow of depression. Only by the grace of God that I received medication at UCLA which helped. But it was not until 7 years later that I paid for my own psychiatrist as my insurance did not cover all expenses while I was out of work that my new doctor doubled my dosage that I was truly free from depression.

As you can see many things could happen in this young man's life while i was under the destructive grip of depression.

No one had control or even awareness of the depths of my depression that anyone could help.

You see Mom and Dad, it was luck and being in the right place that I finally got relief from depression. Even when I first got medication in 1999, it was hardly enough to relieve all my symptoms. I was too ashamed and too embarrassed to ask for better.

I believe that Clay is happy, joyful and at peace now.

May the good Lord be with you and may He bless you with the grace of self forgiveness.

Dear Susan Selke,

I heard Clay's story on NPR. My husband was killed flying in Laos for Air America in 1970. I still live with PTDS from my 2 years in SEA. My brother, 101st airborne, also a Viet-Nam veteran, recently died, still fighting PTSD. Please know how many people support the military and appreciate your son's bravery in protecting us and our freedom. The public and the military are realizing our heros have hearts in need of healing. My thoughts are with you and your family.

I heard about the wonderful person Clay was, all too late. I was given a link about Team Rubicon a week and a half after Clay's passing. Reading the articles about him just broke me down because through the struggle of deppression, you long for someone who you think may understand and I felt maybe Clay could have been that someone. My thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends of Clay Hunt; i've planned to make a trip to go visit Clay, heard he liked turtles and so I have a little gift for him if there's room. I wish that I could get to know him, this beautiful person he was. If there is any possibility in meeting the parents of such a great Marine, please contact me. I just recently got off of active duty and came back to San Antonio, maybe if I could have come back sooner, who knows what fate could have made possible.

At times I suppose I have felt empty and dark, After I was wounded in Iraq I asked the question why I had survived when others didnt. 6 years later I still struggle with memories of killing and the loss of my brothers, and the physical pain of my injuries can be hard to ignore. I feel your pain brother, But we still need needed you here with us. My heart weeps for those who need Clay here. From afar his work is sure to be even more than that which he achieved here.

Our darling has gone to the angels above;
Where there's nothing but
happiness, joy and love.
Gone from this world, so full of strife;
Back to the God who gave him life.
But rejoice that God chose
our sweet flower for His own;
And has taken him back to His Heavenly home

April 17, 2011

Dear Susan and Stacy,

After seeing you online we felt compelled to write you both. Being the parents of two active duty Marines ourselves we know the pride and worry we have for our children, in addition to the belief that our Marines are doing what they love most. Serving and protecting others. The Marine Corps has a long list of traditions. One is "Once a Marine always a Marine". Clay was a true servant. Protecting and helping others. He will always be a Marine. We agree Clay was a casualty of war and should be honored as such.

Marine Hunt will be remembered by our family for his Esprit DE corps, honor and faithfulness to God and Country.

Thoughts and prays for comfort to your family. I didn't know Clay, but from what I've read, I believe Clay's challenge to each of us would be if this event touched you, then do something for someone today, find a way to make a difference tomorrow, help someone in need the next day, and then repeat again and again and again.

Dear Family and friends: Just remember that Clay is not gone, just gone before. To be absent in the body is to be present with the Lord. He was given time not only to serve his country; but to help his fellow veterans. His work will long endure.

My family knows the horrors of suicide and the thousands of questions that go unanswered. My heart aches with you are I remember the loss of my sweet husband of 49 years. He was given massive amounts of drugs while in the hospital and was home only four hours before he took his life.

There is an online ministry that can help you a lot through all of this. It is called Grief/Share - just Google it. They will send you an e-mail for 365 days to help your cope with your loss. The very day I thought I would skip it, it was the day that helped me the most because I didn't. Thank you for your sacrifice along with your loved one. I have an 18 year old grandson who has signed up with the Army and will leave for boot camp right after high school graduation. Will you pray for him as you did Clay?

I wrote about him and how he honored our nation by being a Marine and serving our country. I hope in some way it will help you and others.

My brother died tragically several years ago, supposedly by his own hand although there was some question about this. Irregardless, he was very unhappy at the time of his death and had told me that he was asking Father God to take him Home. My sister and I survived the loss of our baby brother but my parents could not reconcile themselves to the loss of their son. Both grieved his passing, so much so that they too very soon passed away. Not long after their deaths, my sister had a vision in which she saw our parents happily sitting under a tree in heaven with our brother next to them, playing his guitar and singing to them. It is my fervent and sincere prayer that the parents and family of Clay Hunt will be able to take refuge and comfort in the Lord and His faithful promise that one day they too shall be able to see their beloved child again, this very special and quite remarkable young man who was not only a decorated soldier for his country, but a committed Christian soldier for His Lord and Savior.

My thoughts and prayers are with your entire family. God bless you with comfort through the memories you have of him and the smiles he brought over the years....and God grant you peace knowing that Clay is now in Heaven. I am sure that HE took him home and he is at peace on streets of Gold until you all join him one day. I never knew him. But I undestand the PTSD and I am also a person who lost a partner from this disorder. Bless you all and know that prayers are lifted daily. God will bring you through it all.

My bf has the same age and was for over 5 years as a Marine, two tours and a half in Afganistan, so Hunt's story relates to me deeply. I pray for you, for your family and all who have suffered the wounds of war.

I never met Clay...but I was in the Marine Corps as well. I served in Iraq for a very short time but understand the tough transition from military life to civilian life. I have many friends that grapple with PTSD every day and it is very sad that we cannot, as a nation, ensure peace for our returning troops. Mental peace. Physical peace. No...I never met Clay...but he is in my thoughts and my condolences do go out to his family. Rest in Peace Marine. - Sgt. Jason Adamiec, USMC 1999-2003, OIF I

I never met Clay Hunt, but I would like to extend my condolences to his family and friends. Mr. Hunt was a hero and sought to do the right things in life. Please know he tried harder and did more during his life than most. His determination and courage are inspiring and have touched many.

I was touched and saddened by Mr. Hunt's mission in life. As a fellow Texan, I feel like I knew him. The Hunt family and friend's should be proud. I pray that you all find comfort and peace with your loss.

We are with you in peace, Clay, as you are with us, helping us to fulfill your legacy in our everyday lives. Educating the world that we are all one and if we focus on the positive and educate one another in this way we may create the sense of peace this world needs. Thank you for all you've done and all you've touched in your beautiful life. Rest in peace my brother.

To Clay's family and friends, my heart is with you and I send you all the light and love I possess to stay strong and carry on his legacy.
