Herbert Hand Obituary

Herbert Allan Hand, loving father, grandfather and great grandfather died on the 8th of August 2012. Herb was born in Los Angeles, California on the 8th of November 1925 to Allen Henry Hand and Jeannette Goulet Hand. He was a 1949 Chemical Engineering graduate of Cornell University and a veteran of the US Navy, serving in World War II.
Herb served in petro chemicals at Gulf Oil Corporation from 1949 to 1970 before completing his career as a Senior Vice President at Fluor Corporation in 1987. Herb's professional life was closely woven into the fabric of Hand family life. Herb began his career at Gulf Oil in Philadelphia where he met Louise Burnett Kite (Weezie) who became his wife on the 23rd of September 1950. In Philadelphia, they had two daughters, Barbara (Bobbie) and Lynn. In 1957, the family of four relocated to Abadan Iran where Herb was on loan to the National Iranian Oil Refining Company. While in Iran, Virginia (Ginny) was born, much to the surprise of her grandmothers! In 1964, the family returned to the US and settled in Houston where our precious Janet was born. In 1966 the family moved once more and spent a year in Korea where Herb oversaw the construction of Chinhae Chemical Company. Herb brought his family back to settle in Houston in 1967 where he has lived since then.
Herb had a sharp analytical mind; he naturally tried to figure out how everything worked. This trait contributed to his successful professional life and was evident in all that he did. Herb was an avid golfer, photographer, bridge player, and woodworker. He was a long-term member of Braeburn Country Club. Herb and Weezie loved the ocean and enjoyed their condo on the beach where Herb also employed his engineering skills and held leadership positions on the Board of Gulfstream Condominium in Corpus Christi. Herb had a strong faith; he was a member of Holy Spirit Episcopal Church where he served as vestry member, Senior Warden, and Lay Eucharistic Minister from 1964 until his death.
Herb is survived by his four daughters and their families, Barbara Hand Gideon, and husband Michael of Austin, TX, Lynn Hand Woll and husband Scott of Tacoma WA, Virginia Hand Sullaway and husband Guy of Missouri City, TX, and Janet Kay Hand of San Felipe, TX. He is also survived by grandchildren Patrick Logan Gideon and his wife Abigail, and children Emma Rose and Daniel Patrick; Ashley Gideon Sullins and her husband Justin and daughter Brynley Elyssa; Bryanna Elizabeth Woll, and Guy Marshall Sullaway.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife of 51 years, Louise Kite Hand (Weezie), his brother Donald Hand and grandchild, Alexander Jonathan Woll.
A memorial service is to be conducted at three o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 15th of August, at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, 12535 Perthshire Road in Houston, where the Rev. Israel Ahimbisibwe, Interim Associate Rector, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the Parish Hall.
In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in Herb's name may be directed to The Center, Inc. 3550 W. Dallas St., Houston, TX, 77019; The Church of the Holy Spirit Memorial Fund, 12535 Perthshire Rd., Houston, TX, 77024; or to a charity of one's choice.

Christmas will be different this year without my annual card from Herb. Herb wrote about his wonderful family and his activities for the year. I kept him informed on my family and our travels. I admired and respected your Dad and enjoyed working with him at Miller & Kerr. He was an amazing man.

We have had such good times with your dad when they came to visit Lynn. He was very proud of all his "girls". You were very fortunate to have such a wonderful caring, intelligent father. Our prayers go out to all of you. Love, Jim & Sue Sullivan

Herb's Family,

Herb will be greatly missed by all who knew him. With his keen mind and desire for excellence, he brought out the best in all with whom he worked and fellowshipped.
