George Sarvadi Obituary

GEORGE "MOSU" SARVADI April 14, 1925 - 2006 GEORGE SARVADI, 80, Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather passed away after a long, courageous battle against colon cancer. Known as "Mosu" (the Romanian word for old man) to those close to him, he was the patriarch of a large, loving family and will be sorely missed by all those whose lives he touched. Born on April 14, 1925 to George and Victoria Sarvadi in Erie, PA, he graduated from Strong Vincent High School in 1942. After a brief time spent at Illinois Institute of Technology, George, like many in his generation, enlisted to serve in the U.S. Navy as the US entered WWII, and trained at Great Lakes Naval Station. He served in the Navy as Ensign from 1942 to 1946, where he served in the Mediterranean, the South Atlantic, and South America. Upon completion of his military duty, he re-enrolled at Illinois Institute of Technology and received a BS in Chemical Engineering in 1948. He continued his education at Case Western Reserve University, where he earned a Masters in Chemical Engineering in 1952 while working at the Harshaw Chemical Company. George met the love of his life, Gertrude "Tootsie" Oros, in 1942. They were married on October 20, 1946, and lived in the area around Cleveland, Ohio. He was the first Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in Aurora, Ohio. They moved to Houston in July of 1971, where George worked as a practicing chemical engineer until his retirement in the mid 1990s. He was an active member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, Prince of Peace Catholic Community, Knights of Columbus, and a regular contributor to the Greater Houston Area Blood Bank. He was an avid golfer who cherished his recent annual visits with his sons to Pinehurst, NC and other golf meccas. He is survived by Trudy, his wife of 59 years, his sister Mary Graham and her husband, Dick of Clearwater, FL, his 9 children, (David and wife Suzanne of Manassas, VA, Jerry and wife Donna of Jacksonville, FL, Jim and wife Ruth of Columbus, OH, Mike and wife Patti of Dallas, TX, Mary Mikes and husband Bob of Parker, CO, Judy Covert and husband Lynn of Las Vegas, NV, Paul and wife Vicki of Houston, TX, Marcia Ruiz and husband Greg of Sacramento, CA, and John and wife Lisa of Houston, TX), grandchildren, Jennifer Sarvadi and Sean Sarvadi, Derek and Lara Siewert, Ben and Christine Taylor, Stefanie Sarvadi, Kendra and Darren Stroupe, Brandon Sarvadi and Christopher Sarvadi, Shannon and Mark Breuer, Cynthia and David Heaton, Diana and Zack Alexander, Kristen and John Paul Barkley, Brittany Sarvadi, Wes Sarvadi, James Mikes, Kathryn Mikes, Joseph Mikes, Adam and Tracy Covert, Rachel and Jeremy Lowe, Matthew Covert, Benjamin Sarvadi, George Sarvadi, and Katherine Grace Sarvadi, Max Hassman and Miriam Hassman; great-grandchildren, Kendall, Morgan and Evan Siewert, Tovah Klinger, Naomi Klinger, Isaac Taylor, Christian, Carter, Lauren and Jake Breuer, Tyler, and Rylie Jane Heaton, Emily Kate Alexander, Adam Covert, Jr., Taylor Bishop, Dakota Judith and Leighton Lowe. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m., Monday, January 9, 2006 at Kingwood Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:15 a.m., Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at St. Martha Catholic Church, 2302 Oak Shores Dr., Kingwood, TX. The Rite of Committal and interment will follow in Houston National Cemetery. The family extends deep gratitude for the care and compassion provided to George throughout his illness by Dr. Edward Lin and his staff at MD Anderson Cancer Clinic and the caregivers at Northeast Hospice, and in lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to these two very worthy causes.
