Wesley Gilbreath Obituary

Wesley Benton Gilbreath, Sr., beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, the 13th of January 2013, while watching the Texans football game. Although in declining health for several years, Wes kept his quick wit, many times laughing at his struggles.
Wes was born to Elliot and Clara Fletcher Gilbreath in Coryell County Texas, on the 6th of January 1929. Although his birth was during the worst depression in American history, Wes never allowed those circumstances to keep him from success. His entire life revolved around taking the negatives and turning them into positives for himself, his family, his community and friends. A graduate of Gatesville High School, Wes went on to serve in the U.S. Army at Fort Bliss during the Korean War. Wes would later study accounting at the University of Houston while working full time at Folgers Coffee Co. Later, he would become the accountant at Key Oil Company on Lawndale.
In November 1964, Wes founded SignAd Outdoor Advertising Company. For nearly fifty years, Wes Gilbreath was instrumental in advancing Texas' economic growth through real estate, land development and entrepreneurial endeavors. In 1990, he retired leaving a thriving business that his children own and operate today.
Wes was very active in politics that supported conservative values. He also served as CEO and Chairman of the Board for KSBJ, a Christian Radio station which is now received all over the world through the internet. Additionally, Wes, supported his wife, Pat, in her ministry that included hosting a local community forum talk program, ""A Chat with Pat."" As an avid reader with a thirst for knowledge, Wes went on to establish a scholarship fund, ""The Wes Gilbreath Spirit Award."" It awards two scholarships annually to graduates of Gatesville High School. The lives that Wes Gilbreath touched through his success and wisdom is far reaching…as his was a life of giving to his church, business, community and country.
Coryell County Museum in Gatesville became one of his last projects and passion. This bit of Texas history now hosts The Texas Spur Collection which is considered the largest in America. This collection was donated by Lloyd Mitchell, his high school coach.
Wes is survived by his wife, Patsy D. Gilbreath; and three sons, Lee, and wife, Mary of Sugar Land; Wes, and wife, Lisa of Spring; Brett, and wife, Donna of Friendswood; three daughters, Lisa Gilbreath Horan of Houston, Sheree Metoyer of Huffman, and Stacey, and husband, Rick Powell of Beach City. He leaves behind fifteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dollie Shepherd of Dallas, and Ruth Jones of Gatesville. He is also survived by his step- children, Pam, and husband, Fred Chambers of Beaumont, Gordon Upchurch, and wife, Sylvia of Houston, Karla, and husband, Mike Hoy of League City, Melinda, and husband, Rick Hoyer of Crosby, Phillip Upchurch, and wife, Arlene of Webster, Lisa, and husband, Gene Barnette of Sugar Land, and Bob Upchurch, and wife, Leslie of League City. He has sixteen surviving step-grandchildren and nine step-great grandchildren.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until eight o'clock in the evening on Thursday, the 17th of January, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A funeral service is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Friday, the 18th of January, also in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, where the Rev. Fred Chambers and the Rev. Mike Smith are to officiate.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held at a venue announced at the service.
At a later date, the family is to gather for an interment at Flint Creek Cemetery in Gatesville, Texas.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family kindly suggests contributions be directed to The Wes Gilbreath Spirit Award, 311 S. Lovers Ln., Gatesville, TX, 76528.

Hi Gilbreath family,
My name is Christina, my father is Dean Wall, so Wes would´ve been my great uncle. While I worked in Houston, he visited me and called me every so often. He was always a light and I always appreciated him calling.
I have 4 children now and we began a lineage project for school. I would love to purchase his book and learn more about this side of the family. If anyone sees this message, please email me.
Blessings,
Christina Wall Sonnenberg

Your funny yet witty sense of humor will dearly be missed... You truly have taught me and so many others the meaning of passion & determination. You created your own business from the ground up "SignAD", wrote & published your own book, fought during the Korean war, served as CEO & Chairman for KSBJ (Now the leading Christian radio station heard all over the world), Started your own scholarship for high school students in need, Mingled with the best of the Politicians, including Ronald Reagan, and so much more.... You have blessed so many with kind and unselfish acts. I will never forget my surprise birthday party.
Please continue to watch over us as you truly were an angel.
We love and miss you "Pops"

Lisa Gilbreath Horan and Gilbreath siblings,
On behalf of the Borkovich family... namely Theresa, Bobby, and Jeff; I wish to express our deepest sympathy as you experience life now without Wes,Sr. We know you will miss him greatly. I remember him taking the time to attend the service of Robert Borkovich,Sr. a few years ago. Old friendships from when you guys were children/neighbors were obviously important to Wes,Sr. He made sure to express this to us, even though his own health was challenged at that time. We are thinking about you and praying you will sense God holding you especially close to Himself during this time.
Sincerely,
Lori, Robert Jr., Theresa, and Jeff

Wes was never short of ideas or opinions. I always liked that about him.He always had stories to tell and they were always interesting or funny. He told me about the baseball team he was on and only one guy had a glove or going to school as a kid and most didnt have shoes. He was a cotton picker,an athlete, served his country, originator, innovator, businessman, politician and he probably could have been a preacher too! I never saw a man with so many credentials.
One verse he liked came from Psalm 127 -Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. He told me this on several occasions.
He used to say "Take care podna"
He was a good man and his presence will be greatly missed at SignAd

Sorry for your loss...Wes as we called him during our high school days at Gatesville in 1946/47. I rememered he had to sleep at the fire station since he couldn't make the school bus departure for home at 4 PM; he was practicing football with the rest of us. God loved him and allowed him to be very successful in business; he was a good man.

Wes was a fine man and a friend. I worked on the A/C at the business and at his home for 15 years. I found him to be friendly, fair and honest plus he was quick to have a joke to tell me.
Wes was a good man and I will miss him. May God bless all of his family in this time of sorrow.

Wes was a good and fair man and I liked him a lot. I worked for him on the AC at the building and at his home for 15 years. He was always kind to me and often had a joke. I found him to be very honest and non pretentious. I will miss him.

To the entire Gibreath Family,
My heart goes out to you after the passing of Mr. Gilbreath. What a blessing this man is in so many lives. He touched many. He touched mine. I have some very fond memories of Mr. Gilbreath from Gatesville to the Little League fields in Freeway Manor. May God help you all find peace in your heart, knowing Wes Gilbreath Sr. is in heaven. Let me share something with you that was shared with me. We say we "lost" someone when they pass. The definition of lost is not knowing where it is. Now we know Wes was a Christian and all Christians go to Heaven. Since they all go to Heaven then we didn't lose Wes at all. He is not lost. We know exactly where he is, in Heaven. Thank you for all the great memories!

Revelation 14:13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Blessed indeed,” says the Spirit, “that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!”
What a wonderful father, husband and uncle and such a blessing to so many. Rest in peace, Uncle Wes...and tell my Daddy I love him. Love, Kimberley (Sheppard) Butler and family.
