Calvin E. Powitzky Sr.

1916 - 2014

CALVIN E. POWITZKY, SR. age 97, passed away Thursday May 8, 2014 in Pasadena, TX.
He was born December 8, 1916, near Guadalupe, Victoria County, Texas to John Edward Powitzky and Eula Ann Leatherwood, their only living child. Left to mourn him is his present wife Joyce Allen Powitzky, 3 sons, David E. Powitzky & wife Carol, Calvin E Powitzky, Jr. & wife Patricia, Robert J. Powitzky; 7 grandchildren, Rachel Steely & husband Clay, John & Kristi Powitzky, Drs. Eric & Amy Powitzky, Dayna Owen and husband Trent Norris, Jania Deary, Erin Johnson & husband David, Dr. Rosser Powitzky & wife Terrisita; 2 step-children, Glen & Holly Sandefer; 17 great-grandchildren; as well as a vast extended family & friends. His family and his church was his greatest blessing. A private family burial service will occur at Forest Park East Cemetery where he will be laid to rest next to his first wife of 64 years, Edith Patricia Cooper.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, May 11, 2014, at Rosewood Funeral Home, 3939 Pasadena Boulevard, Pasadena, Texas. A Memorial Service is planned for Monday, May 12, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at South Main Baptist Church, 4300 E. Sam Houston Parkway South, Pasadena, Texas.
Calvin graduated from Victoria High School at 15 years of age, Victoria Jr. College at 18. He rode his horse to work teaching school, grades 1-8, in a one-room schoolhouse for 2 years. At the age of 22 he answered an ad for a job at a lumber company in Pasadena, Texas. He worked as a draftsman at Todd Shipyard. During WWII he worked for the Department of Navy in New Orleans, La & Galveston, TX designing ventilation systems for "Victory" ships. After the war, he was a designer and builder of homes in Pasadena. As his business grew, he opened Powitky Lumber Company on Thomas Street in Pasadena. He was a charter member of South Main Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Bible study teacher, choir member and a 60-year member of the Finance Committee many years as Chairman. He was a charter member of Pasadena Kiwanis Club where he served in leadership capacity. He was on the Board of the Salvation Army . He embodied the spirit of the ultimate self-reliant pioneer. He could do everything. He was an avid hunter, fisherman & kept his family and friends supplied with fruits & vegetables from his garden.
The family would like to thank John & Linda Christopher and staff of Colonial Oaks Assisted Living for providing such loving care in "Grandad's" final days; as well as, Denise Burdick of Grace Hospice of Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation in "Mr. Po's" name be made to South Main Baptist Church, Pasadena.
