Darold Maxwell Obituary

Darold Maxwell
January 8, 1947 -
October 7, 2014
Darold graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara (B.A. Economics, highest honors, 1969) and from Harvard University (J.D., Magna Cum Laude, 1972). He practiced in the areas of federal income tax planning, real estate, and business law, with an emphasis on structuring complex business transactions to protect clients and minimize taxes.
Darold practiced with the tax group of Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro in San Francisco, and as a name partner of a Palo Alto spinoff from that firm. Darold came to Houston as a full-time faculty member from 1979-1981 of the University of Houston Law Center, and later long-time adjunct. In 1981, he joined Foreman & Dyess as a tax partner, and later Bonham, Carrington & Fox, and Coats Rose. He followed his dream to form a boutique business firm in the Clear Lake area, ultimately practicing law at Maxwell & Maxwell, L.L.P. until his death.
An avid sailor, Darold and Joyce, his wife of 28 years, enjoyed racing and sailing on Whiffler and Moonstruck. They took sabbaticals and sailed with their 10-year- old, Austin, from Houston to Baltimore, throughout the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean. They sailed the western Caribbean, as far south as the San Blas Islands. With friends, they sailed coasts of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and the Balearic Islands. For nearly five years, they kept Barefoot in Georgetown, Great Exuma, Bahamas.
Darold was a skilled woodworker and handyman, and found few repair projects beyond his ability.
Darold was preceded in death by his parents, Eldon and Bessie Maxwell, and his sister, Debbie Maxwell. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Lurie Maxwell of Bacliff, Texas, and step-son, W. Austin Welsh and wife, Valerie Finger, of Austin, Texas.
On October 26, 2014, between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m., there will be a Celebration of Life at Lakewood Yacht Club, 2425 NASA Pkwy, Seabrook, TX 77586, (281) 474-2511, for Darold's friends to say goodbye. Darold will be laid to rest on the blue waters of Georgetown, Great Exuma, Bahamas, at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the University of Houston Law Center-Law Foundation in memory of Darold Maxwell. On-line gifts can be made at: https://giving.uh.edu/law/ .
