Reed Robinson Obituary

Reed Winslow
Robinson
1940-2015
Born November 28, 1940, Reed was called home on June 4, 2015. Reed was a beloved friend and classmate of the Lamar High School 59ers. Reed appeared as a clown diver at the Shamrock Hotel pool during the 50's and the 60's. He was proud to be a U of H Cougar where he got his degree and then he became a popular and well respected English teacher at Lee High School. Reed served the Houston Astros Baseball team as their mascot, "Chester Charge". He will be remembered for his ribald sense of humor, splendid execution of the "King's English" and his zest for life.

Will never forget knowing Reed during our days at Johnston Junior High on Cleburne. I went on to San Jacinto and Reed proceeded to Lamar.

I remember Reed very fondly. I don't think anyone who went to Lamar High School between 1957 and 1960 would say that they don't remember him. He was amazing. He was outgoing. And he was what we called "a character." One of my fondest memories of Reed was when he directed the mixed chorus in "It's a Great Night for Singing." He stood on a bar stool to direct the chorus. Each time the "falling, falling in love" lyric was sung, he fell off the bar stool.

His work with the March of Dimes was very important to him.

I was telling a co-worker about you today and how much fun you were as a teacher at Robert E. Lee, Houston. As I was searching to find information about you as Chester Charge of the Astros, I saw where you passed. Thank you for all the memories and being a great teacher.

Reed was a gifted, special person with a wry sense of humor and a huge heart. I loved directing him in many of the Lee musicals, especially as the delightful wizard in The Wizard of Oz, and as Big Jim in Guys and Dolls. Reed is fondly remembered and truly missed.

I just left the final farewell service for Reed and am filled with varied emotions. Guilt, for not keeping in touch with this little man of many talents. Joy, for the memories I have of our childhood years and HS together. Sadness for not being able to help him in his later years when he needed others. Contentment, knowing that he was "saved" and a lover of Jesus Christ which assure me that we will meet again. Thank you Reed for all the great memories and for not breaking my back as we sailed through the air from the 5 meter platform into the pool at the Shamrock so many times. Rest my friend.

July 25, 2015

I was a dwarf with him in Snow White and the seven dwarf's in the late 40's. Reed was a close friend on mine. Janet Hopper. Rest in peace Reed.

Reed was one of the most unforgettable members of the class of 1959. I remember watching him conduct "It's a Great Night for Singing" with the Lamar High School Mixed Chorus. My brother had one of his English classes at Lee High School, and was very much impressed with him, as well. We maintained contact for a while after high school. He was, as the British say, "a one-off." There was nobody ever like him before, and there never will be again.

My dear Reed,
You were such a great guy and wonderful person...I met you my first day of my freshman year at Robert E. Lee, thanks to my good friend and neighbor Marcy Soloman. She told me "I HAD to meet you, she knew I would like your personality. You made me laugh for the next 4 years!! And well beyond...thank you for always being there for me. You had the kindest heart...and so many friends - so many saw that bright light shining and wanted to be near to it. I only wish I had spent some time with you of late....we never know in life when that's going to be it, no more chances to say goodbye. I know that you are with your beloved mother and Kahlua your baby.

I miss you already!!
Love,
Jen

Your love for life and enthusiasm for the English language, Shakespeare, and drama helped engage us in learning and becoming the best we could be.
