William Wohrer Obituary

William J. Wohrer
1954-2016

William Wohrer was born February 28, 1954 in Manhattan, New York. He laid his head to rest, for the final time, after a lengthy battle with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, January 11, 2016 at his home in Spring, Texas. He was preceded in death by his: father, William G. Wohrer, uncle, Henry Wohrer, aunts Alice Skinner Edna Massaro, Mazie Sabino, and Irene O'Neil, as well has his father-in-law A.Z Ward, mother-in-law Relda Ward, and sister-in-law Judith Ward. He is survived by his: mother Rita Wohrer, brother Rob Wohrer, wife Michalene Wohrer, daughter Lindsey Wohrer, sons Christopher & Jeffrey Wohrer, brother-in-law James Ward, sisters-in-law Mary Moore and Linda Mueller, and many loving nieces and nephews. As well as the numerous friends and neighborhood kids he made part of the family.
Bill moved from New York and the age of 13 with his father and family to Houston. His father William brought them to Texas as a lead member of IBM to work in tandem with NASA on the many Apollo launches to come. Though only a teenager at the time, Bill would develop close relationships with many of the astronauts and their families. He was the neighborhood boy who was welcome with open arms at every door. He spoke fondly of their mentorships and the amazing opportunity that had been afforded him. It was a time he cherished and reveled in for the rest of his life. It would also serve as a theme in his personal relationships and his professional work in the future. He would take his boys to their first launch in Cape Canaveral so many years later to show them the beauty, power and adventuresome spirit that had captivated him all those years ago. And as man in the twilight of his career, would share a bottle of scotch in his office and sanctuary at Moffett Productions with the last man to step on the Moon, Gene Cernan.
At the age of 18, Bill enrolled at Sam Houston State University where, on the steps of Old Main, he would meet the love of his life, mother of his children, and the person who would set the stage for every wonderful adventure to come. Michalene and Bill were together since 1972 and were united in marriage on July 20th 1974, Lunar Rendezvous.
For over 41 years they stood by each other with love, strength and support. They laughed, they loved… they cried, they loved. He met her on a "Beautiful Huntsville Day" as he told it. And from the moment he opened the door of her Blue 1972 Oldsmobile 442, with the keys she had tossed him on the first chance encounter, he knew "I'm gonna marry this Woman." He did; and they were never apart again.
Bill has known and loved many. He spent his life chasing his passions in every endeavor. A member of the Texas Radio Hall of fame, Bill, aka Bill Moffett, spent the majority of his professional career in Houston radio and in 1988 would open up his own company, Moffett Productions, which is still operated today by his sons. Ever since he was a child, he knew he would be a broadcaster. He was enchanted with the medium since the first time his mother took him and his Boy Scout troop to a local station. You could always see the sparkle in his eye when he talked about the magic of radio and he would usually sum up his wonder and amazement up with, "You never know whose listening."
Radio and his company would give Bill the platform to touch countless lives. He was a natural leader. He guided, inspired, and rooted for all of us blessed enough to grow close to him. Anyone who met him, no matter how brief the encounter, knew two things about him. He was special, and he was loving. A driven talent, dedicated husband, loving father, strong big brother, gentle son, amazing friend, and truly awesome individual, Bill will be sorely missed. He was one of a kind, and the world will be a little colder without his warm voice to soothe us all.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life was held in Bill's honor Friday, January 15th at Rosewood Funeral Home & Memorial Park.

Bill was a great guy and I enjoyed my short stint at Moffet Productions back in the late 80's. You are missed by all who knew you Bill.

Sincerest condolences to the Wohrer and Moffett families. Every time I hear Imagine Dragons - I'm On Top of The World or Grand Funk's - I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home, I always think of that great mentor who gave a young married guy who longed for radio, a job in production. Bill always demanded perfection of his craft, both in the end product and in his employees. While in my mid 40's now, I hv always carried his mantra with me of "work it should, shine it must". I learned many great things from Big Bill and I'm sure his children will carry on his AWESOME legacy. Cheers old buddy!

Back in the 80's the 97 Rock breakfast show, complete with Bill and Andy Beaubien, came to London to broadcast a week of breakfast shows back to Houston. I was lucky enough to be working on the UK end and such was the warmth and magnetism of the man it was impossible not to be drawn into his orbit. We stayed in touch, he was generous enough to host me for a few days at his home when I visited Houston and I managed to send the odd voiceover job his way while making corporates and promos over the years. Speaking of which, I watching him record a spot for a 4th of July "All American Weekend" where he laid down his voiceover on multiple tracks so there wasn't a pause for breath on them. He then panned the audio to L-R alternatively and distorted his voice so the odd phrase sounded like it was coming out of a telephone. Remember, this is back in the mid 80's and this was a process that I think he came up with. Well, thirty years later, BBC Radio 5 Live in the UK are still doing it and so, for me, a little bit of him lives on every time I hear their rather inferior version. I don't think I've ever met anyone quite like him before or since. My condolences to his family.

Happy Birthday, buddy. I know I am an hour and a half late, but I've been thinking about you all day. You are the best brother anyone could have and you will be with me here until the day I see you again.

Bill was a legend in the Houston radio community, and I was lucky to work with him when I was the Program Director of KAUM in the 1970s. We remained in touch long after I moved on to different markets, and I always enjoyed our conversations about radio, and the lives we were leading since we worked together. Sincere condolences to the Wohrer family. Bill was a great guy, but his memory will live on in all of those who knew him.

Houston has lost a great man! Bill not only fostered radio in Houston but was a nationwide influence whose voice is Legendary! I was blessed to be anointed by his advice during my years at KLOL. I will never forget the time Van Halen did a RockLine show from his place in the Woodlands hosted by Bill. His "party on a stick" annual events were the highlight of the Holiday season as was his infamous "fruitcake recipe" on radio stations across the country. The friendship and warmth that he showed me over the years was a constant that will be missed. It's the late night conversations over scotch at his studios that will be missed the most.

rest in peace my friend

I am very saddened to learn of Bill's passing. This piece is a beautiful tribute that truly encompasses the man he was. I will always remember the hours spent with Bill at Moffett Productions watching him work, sharing a scotch and listening to his stories about his radio days gone by. I was a young kid trying to find my way and Bill took the time to pass on many pearls of wisdom and life lessons. Funny, how his beautiful voice and the unique way he punctuated his words helped solidify those memories in my memory. I can still hear his voice in my mind and feel blessed to have had the opportunity to know Bill, being able to call him a friend. He was truly a super broadcast talent. Bill left his Mark on the world and the people who knew him. Condolences to the family on your loss. I know I will, and encourage others to as well, when you want a reminder of how awesome he was, to sit back, press play, and just listen. God Bless

I wish I could have had the privilege of meeting you, but I will tell you one thing that I am sure of. You must have been an amazing person because the part of you I did know was your son Christopher, and he is great. I am guessing that he turned out so nice, honest, and generous because of you. RIP angel I never knew.

It is a point of great pride that Bill was a friend. His boundless talent was second only to his love of adventure, a great joke, making others happy and deep love for those he gathered around him. We shared a passionate love affair with the exploration of space. It came together when we worked to produce videos and audio tracks for Space Media and had Gene Cernan as our on-camera talent. Gene drove to the studio in his pickup truck and loved the shared stories and the professionalism and dedication of the entire staff. He brought us photos and signed each one. Bill brought Gene's favorite, Glenfiddich-one to take home and one to share. The shared bottle took a proud place on his office shelf. I will miss him so much. But, I will always celebrate that Big Bill Hard, uh, Moffett shared his genius, and that great laugh with me.

After many trips over the years to Moffet Productions fixing hum and buzz problems in Bill's studio he gave me the nickname "Buzz" and would always greet me " Hey Buzz" in a welcoming voice. I am proud to have known him! Rest in Peace, Bill.

Bill was definitely one of a kind. He had a tremendous influence on my life. He shared his love of radio with me and helped me get into the radio business. He even gave me my "stage" name.
He was a great teacher and a great leader. He will always be remembered fondly, and he will be missed.
May God bless Bill's family at this time....
