Elizabeth Wier Obituary

Elizabeth Nance Foules Wier
1922-2016
Elizabeth Nance Foules Wier, age 93, passed away peacefully on October 24, at Eagle's Trace Retirement Community in Houston, Texas. She was born to William and Francis Foules in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and spent her adult life in Houston. Mrs. Wier received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Oklahoma College for Women, and her Masters of Education degree from the University of Houston. In 1955 she married Jack Walter Wier and spent 35 wonderful years with him before his passing in 1994. Mrs. Wier was a teacher with HISD who believed that "teachers not buildings" promotes effective learning. She enthusiastically engaged her students in activities that promoted learning in a nurturing and fun environment. She also taught creative writing, yoga, poetry and leadership for Methodist, Episcopal, Roman Catholic and non-denominational groups. She and Jack had a love of sailing and she had articles published in Boating Magazine and The Instructor.
Nance was a devout Christian and long-time member of Christ Church Cathedral. She gave generously to The Beacon (an outreach for the homeless), Camp Allen, and many other community programs. She served in the Ladies Parish Association, was a volunteer at Villa de Matel Convent and was a faithful and supportive member of The Society of Companions of the Holy Cross.
Mrs. Wier's generousity also extended to her alma mater, Oklahoma College for Women, now the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO), where she funded the Jack Wier, Jr. and Nance Foules Wier Fund for Faculty Development, and the Emerson–Wier Liberal Arts Symposium, as well as contributing to scholarships and capital improvements of the campus.
Those who knew her will attest to her honor, integrity, generosity and great sense of humor. She was truly devoted to her friends and family and their needs and well-being. She will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents, William and Francis Foules, and brother Billy Foules. She is survived by her cousins, Barbara Foules Shepherd, Patricia Schott, Robert Thomson.
The funeral service will be at Christ Church Cathedral. 1117 Texas, Houston, 77002 Monday, October 31, 2016 at 2pm. The Family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions can be made to The Beacon c/o Christ Church Cathedral, 1117 Texas, Houston, 77002, or The Society of Companions of the Holy Cross, 46 Elm Street, Byfield, MD, 01922.
