Hallie and Michael: Madeline and I will be praying for you this week. I wish there was something we could do to comfort you. We care deeply about both of you. Hallie: Not only was the world blessed by having Matt, but Matt was blessed to have such a wonderful mom. For a couple of years I saw first hand how you put your kids above ALL else. I remember Matt reciting the entire Green Eggs and Ham book verbatim because he said you read to him at night. I remember you frantically running into their birthday party at the rock wall place saying that you had just walked out of an important meeting and weren't sure if you would have a job on monday. I remember you letting the boys skip school and watching three movies back to back at the theater w/ them. I remember that you always seemed to be the team mom for whatever sport, despite the fact that you were one of the only working moms (and talk about a demanding and stressful job you must have had!!!) In the few years I was involved with the boys, you were a real inspiration to me because I saw you spending any free time you had w/ the boys. And from what the boys said about you, I could tell they KNEW they were loved deeply by you, and they loved you in return for all the love and time you gave them. This week I really hope that you reflect on all that you gave to Matt and know that God must have given him to you knowing that only you could pack a lifetime of a mother's love into such a short period of time. Very sincerely, Tiffany

Hallie: Madeline and I were out at the site today. The stone is beautiful; I love the picture and verse. Madeline liked the balloons there, and I told her I bet they were from you. She pushed the balloon holder down as far as it would go into the ground so they wouldn't fly away. You and Michael are in our prayers at night. Stop by and see us some time.

Hi Matthew....
I wish you knew how badly it hurts to live without you. Yet you came to me in one of the most amazing & reassuring dreams I have had since you passed... You made sure that I knew you have never left me and told me repeatedly that you are here with the people you love in everything thing that they do. You & Danny were together and smiling and the both of you seemed more happy than I think I had ever seen you during your time here. The both of you explained how you never left us and mentioned that the only difference was that you could not PHYSICALLY touch us. I don't think thats true Matt... I woke with the feeling of your skin still in my hands... I also woke with the vision of your smile still imprinted in my mind and the sound of your over-joyed laughter still ringing in my ears. I feel you and also Danny.... everyday. If your presence is absent during my dreams of Danny, I tell him that when he sees you, to tell you that I forever LOVE you and miss you. I am always thinking of you Matthew. I just wanted to thank you for coming to me and reassuring me through my dreams that you are STILL here. I woke up in tears and overwhelmed with the feeling of a heavy burden gone from my shoulders & mind... I was happy, because you were happy. I miss you. MY LOVE FOR YOU IS INFINITE. Stay with me and guide me through life.... I couldn't make it if you didn't. I love you.
Hallie & Michael- I miss and love you dearly. It's been too long and I am sorry for that. I hope that you don't hold it against me and I pray we get to spend more time together soon. Love you both very, very much

My Matthew ....
You've been gone from us for six months today and it is very hard. I hope you know that you are still just as much a part of my everyday life as you always have been! I just miss you.. I miss having you to call when things aren't going so well, such as now! You were always ready to listen and provide me with helpful tips that would get me through the hard times.... I miss your face, your smile and your laugh. I love you with everything i have and still turn to you for guidance. Your mother and I are as close as ever and I love her as if she is my own mother.. You would be proud of the relationship we share. Things here aren't so pleasant without you but I know that you will be there to put us back up on our feet. Please continue to watch over all of your friends and especially your family. They miss and love you so much! Just wanted to remind you ... you are my lifelong best friend. and I will cherish our friendship for the rest of my days..

Dear Jim and Family,
I have such fond memories of you and John from our days at St. Thomas More and Weingarten's #109. You both made such an impact on all who knew you and inevitably your names always come up at reunions. It was under those circumstances that I have recently learned of the sad loss of you son. It is with the deepest sympathy that I write to you today. I extend heartfelt condolences to all your family and pray that the unity, loyalty, humor and love that I remember of the Vanderhiders is helping you to get through each day. As evidenced by the many entries in this guest book, Matt was a true gift to all who knew him and I am sure that he continues to be so with the angels in Heaven. Please remember that there are many who pray for you and your family. May you be able to again find some of the joy that God promises to us.

“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine!” (Isa 43:1b)
Jim, Hallie and Michael,
My heart is breaking for you. I cannot begin to imagine your sorrow. It warms me to see how much love and sympathy you are receiving from friends near and far. I know how special Matthew is to you, and I can tell how many lives were touched by his effervescent joy. He is clearly special to the Lord, for He called him home long before any of us would have wanted Him to.
And although the love we send and the prayers we lift up on your behalf cannot stop the heartache, I trust that Matthew would remind us all even now that the separation is temporary – that to live is Christ and to die is gain. The Lord knew this day from the beginning of time. What a gift of grace for Him to have Matthew’s flame burn so brightly and warmly, although seemingly far too briefly.
May He who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think comfort and strengthen you every day.

Vanderhider Family,
I find myself at a loss for words at this most devestating time in your lives. I could not possibly understand how you feel. In your time of grief, please know that you are not alone. The many who love and care for you and your son are praying for you. Through your faith, may you find the peace to lighten your heart and allow you to focus on the many joyous memories Matt's life has left with you. I did not have the pleasure of meeting Matt during his short time here, but I wish I had. His beautiful spirit touched all he came in contact with. Rest assured that he will continue to touch many more lives as he looks down from Heaven. God has called one of his precious angels home and may you find comfort in His embrace.
Always in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Vanderhider family,
I am honored to have known and coached Matt in the 7th grade. Matt wasn't the best athlete but he would always pour his heart out on the field. He would always come runnin off the field with his helmet wobbling around and he would stand next to me ready to go back in. When I would look around the sideline Matt stood there looking at me with the funniest lookin smile and eyes shining bright. In you go Matt, go make a tackle. The one thing that stands out and I still use Matt as an example is when Matt tried out for basketball his 7th grade year. God did not really bless Matt to be a basketball player but he had the heart of one. Matt was probably the hardest cut I ever had to make as a coach. Vanderhider family thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to coach Matt and Mike. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Matt:
For about the last 5-6 years, I have thought about you "literally" every single day. Once your stepsister Madeline started to talk well and get her own little personality, I noticed that she had SOOOO many of your mannerisms. She says the most outlandishly funny off-the-wall things that crack me up, just the way you did when I knew you. All her friends tell me Madeline is the class clown. She wears her feelings on her sleeve, just like you did. If Madeline is mad, everybody knows it. If she is happy, everybody knows it. She stomps out of the room when she is mad, and she has the biggest belly laugh you have ever heard when she is happy---just like I remember you around that age. I will think of you every day because I see you in my daughter. It was a pleasure being your step-mother. When I told Madeline you died we were at the park Madeline held me while I cried my eyes out. A flood of memories came back that I shared with her. I hadn't thought of it for 10 years, but I remember that we ALWAYS had to go eat at Dirty's because that was your favorite restaurant. And I remember you yelling up the stairs to the maid: "Josefa, "Foootbaaaaall!!!!" That was her cue to run around and find all your football gear quickly so you could get dressed. Your dad would admonish you for it. I always laughed. But a moment that Madeline and I have shared many times over the years and laughed until we cried is when we talked your dad into letting us hot wax his back. You made me hide the video camera and film it without your dad's knowledge. You would pull the wax off really slowly on purpose so your dad would scream in pain. I am so glad I have that day on film because we all laughed until we cried it was so funny that your dad would let us do that to him. The world is missing a wonderful person, but there are a lot more angels laughing in Heaven because of your great personality. You will always be in my heart.

Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Matt. 5:4
I have often reflected upon this beautiful truth and found it the greatest and surest comfort in time of mourning. A firm faith in the real and continual presence of our loved ones has brought the conviction and consolation that death has not destroyed them, nor carried them away. Rather it has given them life! A life with power to know fully and to love perfectly. With this new life and new power our loved ones are always present to us, knowing and loving us more than ever before. The tears that dampen our eyes in times of mourning are tears of homesickness, tears of longing for our loved ones. But it is we who are away from home, not they! Death has been for them a doorway to an eternal home. They are still with us, lovingly and tenderly waiting for the day when we, too, will enter the doorway of our eternal home. It is such a mistake to see death as separation and nothing more. For us who believe, death is a preparation for eternal union with those we love, in the peace and joy of heaven.
God Bless your hearts and family.
