Humphrey Chang Obituary
Humphrey C. Chang, age 68, of Two Rivers, died Thursday evening, May 9, 2013, at St. Vincent Hospital.
Humphrey Chang served in the Royal Lao Army. His resourcefulness and energy helped him rise through the ranks of the Laotian Army quickly, eventually earning him the rank of Captain in his early twenties. He fought in the Laotian Civil War, better known as the Secret War because most Americans were unaware of the fighting being waged in Vietnam's neighboring country, Laos. Along with his Hmong hillsmen, who sided with the Americans and Lao Royalist, he helped disrupt North Vietnamese supply lines that ran through Laos and Hmong territories into South Vietnam as well as rescue downed American airmen. In 1999, he became an American citizen. An avid fan of classic Americana, he took the name Humphrey after the political icon Hubert Humphrey and Hollywood great Humphrey Bogart. He also thought the name Humphrey, phonetically sounded similar to "Hmong Free," alluding to the historically oppressed ethnic minority Hmong and their fight for freedom.
With a formal military education in Laos, Humphrey also attained multiple certificates in machine operations from various technical colleges in America including Lakeshore Technical College, Fox Valley Technical College, Textron Inc, and Anoka Vocational Technical Institute. His proudest accomplishment was as a refugee, with very little resources or knowledge of the American education system, he was able to put all eleven of his children through college.
Survivors include his wife, Xu Chang, Two Rivers, eleven children and seven grandchildren.
An educational memorial will be established in Humphrey's name.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2013, at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Two Rivers. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be Fr. Carl Schmitt. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Madison.
The family will greet relatives and friends at The Klein & Stangel Funeral Home, 1420 22nd Street, Two Rivers, on Saturday, May 18, from Noon until 10:00 p.m. and on Sunday, May 19, from Noon until 10:00 p.m.

We feel so privileged and honored to have your entire family as our friends. Xu, you and your children were the sparkle in Koua's eyes....he glowed from within because of his pride in all of you. We are extremely proud of his service to our military, generosity and kindness. What a special man!
