William L. "Bill" Harmon, 92, of Caldwell, Idaho, passed away on Monday March 31, 2014 at home of natural causes. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5 2014 at Dakan Funeral Chapel, 504 South Kimball Avenue, Caldwell, Idaho with Reverends Ralph Lawrence and Raymond Bates officiating. Bill was born May 8, 1921 at Caldwell, Idaho to Roy and Gertrude Harmon, He attended Caldwell High School in 1940. Following high school Bill attended the College Of Idaho for two years. While at the C of I Bill lettered in tennis. When World War II broke out Bill went to Seattle to work at Boeing building B-17 and B-29 Bombers. Bill's high school sweetheart Sue Bates took a train to Seattle and was met by Bill in Portland, Oregon. They traveled to Vancouver, Washington, where Bill and Sue were married by Sue's Uncle Clark Smith on May 18, 1942. While Bill worked for Boeing in Seattle, Sue worked at Sears & Roebuck, a grocery store and then at Boeing.
Bill and Sue returned to the Caldwell area in September 1945 where they settled in a small house on 16th Street where their son Sid was born November 29, 1946. They built and moved into a house on Ellis Avenue in Caldwell in 1950 where they lived for 27 years.
After the war Bill worked for McNiel Lumber Company before starting a small woodworking business in a double car garage on 10th Avenue in Caldwell behind the site of the old KCID building. Bill purchased the Caldwell Manufacturing Building in 1950. This became the Harmon Cabinet Shop which he operated until 1976. After selling the cabinet shop Bill and Sue operated Boston Beef House in Ontario, Oregon for two years and then moved full time to McCall, Idaho. They lived in McCall and traveled to Arizona as "snowbirds" until moving to Meridian in 1992. Bill continued with his love affair with wood by continuing to carve birds and turn wooden bowls on his lathe until well after 2010.
McCall was a special place for Bill and Sue. They bought a little cabin called "the chicken coop" in 1960. Many weekends of work over two years turned it into a beautiful summer cabin they enjoyed until 1970 when it was sold and they designed and built their wonderful year round residence. While in McCall they enjoyed entertaining many visitors, hiking, fishing, chasing huckleberries and riding the four Hondas they had over the years. Bill and Sue also traveled around the United States going coast to coast twelve times during visits to their son on his Navy assignments.
Bill is survived by his wife Sue of Meridian and his son Sid (Deborah) of Meridian. Bill is also survived by two grandchildren Ted Harmon of Boise, ID and Nicole Landrum of Palmer, AK and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
