Norman Eugene Caulk, 96, of Boise finished the good race on July 30, 2017. He was born in Salmon, Idaho on April 28, 1921 to Nick and Jessie Mihu. He lived there with his family until he was in the first grade when he and his brothers and sister were gathered up and put on a train to be taken to the Children's Home on Warm Springs in Boise. He stayed there for 4 years, being sent out each school year to a rural community to fill the schools. When he was 10 he was adopted by Addie Caulk to be with his brother George and he moved to the Squaw Butte in Emmett, ID. He graduated from Emmett High School in 1939. He attended NNC for one year and then moved to Boise where her met our mother Doryce Coryell. They were married on December 8, 1941, yes the day after war was declared. Dad served in the army in World War II and spent 2 years in the European theater. That service included his claim to fame as a survivor of the sinking of the Leopoldville in the English Channel on Christmas Eve 1944 as well as being awarded the Bronze Star for heroism and courage while saving another soldiers life under fire from Nazi Forces. We are proud of his service. Dad never seemed to know a stranger. He loved his country, his family and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Dad and Mom had 5 children, Stanley, Jeff, Linda, Jim and Brent. Dad tried his hand at farming but they eventually moved to Curtis Rd (right were St. Al's is today) where we all grew up, spent time with family, school and church activities. They lived and worked in Boise at several jobs, the most historically notable the Allumbaugh Dairy, Stanley Home Products, Idaho Candy Company, Gate City Steel and the State Highway District office where he retired in 1982.
Dad lost Doryce on April 4, 2003 and began his last tough adventure in life without the love of his life. Norm is survived by his 5 children, Stanley Caulk (Maureen), Jeffrey Caulk (Gloria), Linda Anthony (Kevin), Jim Caulk (Vivian) and Brent Caulk as well as his brother Stan Bills of Tacoma, WA and Sister-in-law Elaine Wilson of Meridian. Also 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends.
Any Memorial donations can be sent to the Boise Rescue Mission. Dad sent them $10 per month as long as we can remember.
A committal service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 11, 2017 at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. An escorted procession will leave Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel at 10:20 a.m. to go to the committal. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Boise New Hope, Church of the Nazarene.
