George McNichol Obituary

George Francis McNichol 1930 - 2011 George Francis McNichol, 80, of McCall died Monday September 5, 2011, in a Boise hospital. He was born October 4, 1930, in Bronxville, New York, where he was raised. George graduated from Bronxville High School, in 1948. He then served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was assigned to the USS Enterprise, the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the eighth US naval vessel to bear the name USS Enterprise. Before marrying his wife Alice in 1959, George attended Manhattan College where he graduated in 1959 with a Baccalaureate degree in Business Management. In 1973 George and Alice founded and operated Apple Tree Design Depot in Washington, Connecticut, an interior design store catering to residential and commercial clients. George's hobbies included poetry, studying American and World history, learning the Italian language and gardening. After operating Apple Tree Design Depot for 25 years, George and Alice pursued their dream of starting a new life in the west and settled in McCall in 2001. George and Alice were parishioners of The Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church as well as Chaplain Assistants where they brought Communion to the sick. George loved the youth and always had a "pop quiz" or a little gift in his pocket to give the youngsters in the community. He will be remembered for his achievements, but more so for the love he gave and the selflessness of his actions. George Francis McNichol is survived by his brothers Edward and Robert McNichol, his sister Dorothy Pratt, his three sons; Stephen, Joseph, Philip and one surrogate son, Kerry Mortell, six grand children Brendan, Matthew, Nathaniel, Elaine, Garret, and Ali and three great grand children Noah, Kennley and Hailey. Preceded in death were George's wife Alice Ann McNichol on July 3, 2007 and his life long friend, Jack Kennedy on October 14, 2007. The funeral Mass will be this Friday, September 9, 2011 at 10:00 am, at Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church. Cremation Service is under the direction of the Heikkila Funeral Chapel, McCall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Passionist Missionaries Organization, "Holy Family Passionist Retreat" (860) 521-0440 ext: 116 in the name of George Francis McNichol.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
