Richard Logan Obituary

Richard "Dick" Leroy Logan 1930-2016
of North Canton, passed away early Sunday morning, Nov. 27, just hours after watching his beloved Buckeyes beat "That Team Up North." He was 86 years old. Dick was born on May 4, 1930 in Mansfield, Ohio, to Frank and Pearl Logan.
He is preceded in death by his parents and a son-in-law, Carl Walther. He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Gloria; children, Amy Walther of North Canton, Jeff (Dena) of Dublin, Ohio, Jud (Jill) of Ashland, Ohio, Whitney (Karen) of Upper Arlington, Ohio and Andy (Dede) of North Canton; grandchildren, Katie, Christopher (Erin Roesch), Nathan (Cheryl), Jenna (Winston Ally), Kirsten, Caroline, Melanie, Danny, Cameron, Taylor and Drew; great-grandchildren, Peyton, Mason and Declan; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, Marilyn Hellinger, of Pittsburgh, Pa. Dick was a graduate of Mansfield Senior High School, where he was later inducted into their Athletics Hall of Fame. He attended The Ohio State University, where he was a member of the football team, playing lineman for Coach Woody Hayes. He played in the legendary "Snow Bowl" at Ohio Stadium in 1950. He was also a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. After graduating from OSU in 1952, he went on to play in the NFL for the Green Bay Packers and was a member of the United States Air Force.
Dick worked for the Canton AAA as a sales manager and, in 1975, founded Logan Sports in North Canton. He coached North Canton South midget league football for 20 years, winning multiple championships. For many years, he was head of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's transportation committee. He was a proud member of Ohio State's Varsity "O" Alumni Association. For many years, he supported the efforts of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Young Life.
Dick spent the "fourth quarter" of his life playing golf and petting every dog in sight. Just last week, he saw his son, Jud, speak to the HOF Luncheon Club; spent Thanksgiving with 25 family members; and watched Ohio State defeat Michigan in a double overtime thriller. Up until the day he died, Dick exercised daily at the North Canton YMCA, where he had many friends. Throughout his life, he continued to receive autograph requests and letters in the mail from football fans.
He was most proud of his children for embodying Woody Hayes' "pay forward" mission by their founding of the Logan Family Foundation in 2004, which provides charitable funds for children and families in North Canton, Ashland and central Ohio.
Family will receive friends on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016 at Karlo-Libby Funeral Home, 5000 Everhard Rd. NW, Canton, from 2-5 p.m., followed immediately by a celebration of life. Reception to follow at the North Canton YMCA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Logan Family Foundation: 8405 Arbory Hill Ct, Dublin, OH, 43017.

I have so many good memories of the entire Logan family from my child hood and young adult years growing up in North Canton.

My sincere condolences to the family for the loss of their love one. I was fortunate enough to get to see and talk briefly with Dick the Monday at the Hall of Fame Luncheon. Although I was not a real close friend of Dick's, I got to know him back in 1975 when I became the manager of Citizens Saving in North Canton. Dick was a fine North Canton Citizens, and he offered so much to the sport world of North Canton. I believed he was respected for who he was by anyone, that had the privilege to get to know him.

Our condolences to the Logan family. As a neighbor growing up, I cherish the backyard football games, street basketball, and the Logan's best sledding hill. Mr. Logan was always on his tractor cutting the grass under that magnificent Buckeye tree. Logan's Sporting Goods always had all our spirit wear and continues to give back to the community (thank you Andy, Amy, and the Foundation). How fitting Mr. Logan got to see his Buckeyes beat the State up North.

Thoughts and prayers go out to The Logan Family on the loss of a great man. When Mr. Logan entered a room, his mere presents demanded respect, and as you got to know him, you soon realized what a kind and soft heart he had for such a Big Man.
I always enjoyed talking to him about his kids, and especially grand kids and how proud he was of them as he should be.He and his wife did a great job of raising their family, and I always enjoyed watching how the grandkids took such good care of him.
R.I.P. Mr. Logan, I will truly miss you!

Fittingly, the last time I got to see Mr. Logan was at the Logan Family Charitable Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic - always giving back to his community, even at the age of 86. Mr. Logan has always been one of our favorite and most respected gentlemen. He had a wonderful "knack" for always making you feel welcome, like you were a long lost childhood friend - and he never forgot a name or face. Of course Mr and Mrs Logan's greatest achievement was raising five incredibly bright, articulate, and brilliant children. Amy, Whitney, Jeff, Jud, and Andy are the most amazing people, all tremendously successful in their career choices. Mr. Logan believed that gentlemen should be filled with boundless kindness and showed all of us how to act optimistically with decency and graciousness. We honor you, Mr. Logan, for your immense loyalty, unwavering friendship, and your gracious gifts to all of us.
We lost a true "All American" this week and we are all left with the joyful hope he always shared. We look for that fine day when we will see him once again.

To the entire Logan family, I am so sorry to learn of the passing of Dick. During the years that the Logan family attended Community Christian Church, I got to know Dick, Gloria, and all the kids. When I was in CYF youth fellowship, at the church, Dick was our Sunday School teacher, who was so in tune with us, that it made class enjoyable and meaningful. As Andy's 2nd grade teacher, years later, I really got to know Dick and Gloria as loving parents. May this dear man rest in eternal peace and may we, who were privileged to know him, understand how blessed we all were. And for Dick, here is one last O-H!!

It was a privileged to get to see Mr Logan every morning at North Canton YMCA. I got to hear all his new jokes and old stories of playing football. I also got to hear all about Mr. Logans family and how proud of them he was of every single one of them. My mother Cathy Colley got to take care of Mr Logan when he had his knee replaced. I asked her how he was doing and she said " well he can't find ESPN on the tv in his room" I told my mom that sounds like Mr Logan!! North Canton lost a legend I will never forget him!!

Dick was a customer of mine when I worked at L & K Restaurant in North Canton. He and the guys would come in for breakfast after working out at the YMCA before heading off to work. I have a lot of fond memories of those years. You have my deepest sympathy, and I will remember your family in prayer during this time.

Glo and Family,

Praying that you all can rest in God's Sovereignty and be filled with peace as you remember all the lives that Dick influenced.

He was my first employer! I remember being so intimidated during my interview. Not only did he hire me on the spot, but I put 4 hours in before I had the chance to go home and tell my parents! I remember the first time I messed up a shirt in the screen press...I was terrified. Turned out, he wasn't so bad. He handled it well...a simple head shake with a grin, a proper re-do, and a "now don't do it again." An excellent teacher/coach indeed. And I learned to be a better listener. Within a week, he left me man the shop by myself...probably because he was tired of answering all my questions!

Thank you for sharing him with me! Much love to you all.

Dick was a good friend whom I got to know at "The Y". Until the day before he passed we always joked about this and that. His last good one was about the player from "That team up North". "We have to put a little salt on that "Pepper". He told me when he left Friday afternoon. Good one Dick!

My heart goes out to my cousins Amy, Jeff, Jud, Whitney, Andy and dear sweet Aunt Glo. I have such fond memories of Uncle Dick growing up. He was the biggest kid playing "Red Rover" in the front yard of Grandma & Grandpa's house in Columbus during family reunions. As a young child, he cut quite an imposing figure, but I came to know him as a kind and loving Christian family man. I hope there is solace in a life well-lived, worthy of our admiration and God's love. I will miss you. Rest in peace forevermore.
