Raymond Asher Goodman
Died on August 16, 2011, at his home in Indianapolis, after a short illness. He was born on April 28, 1916, in Indianapolis to Jacob and Bessie (née Palman), recent immigrants from Moldova.
He graduated from Shortridge High School in 1933, where he was the student manager of the basketball team, and from the University of Michigan in 1937. At Michigan, he was a writer for the Michigan Daily and was the AP stringer who reported in 1935 on Jesse Owens's setting of three world records in track and field. Mr. Goodman entered his father's jewelry manufacturing business, Goodman & Co., in Indianapolis in 1937. He was a travelling salesman for the first five years and then, after World War II, established and ran the retail part of the business, Goodman Jewelers, until the late 1990's. In January 1942, he became a naval officer at the Northwestern University Midshipmen's School. He served on various ships, notably early escort aircraft carriers like the Sangamon, joining the Battleship New Mexico in 1942 and joining the staff of Admiral V. H. Ragsdale in January 1943. He later served with Rear Admiral Clifton A. F. Sprague, during the largest of all naval battles, the Battle of Leyte Gulf as part of Taffy-3 Task Unit and most notably on October 25, 1944, when the Japanese fleet was stopped. For his wartime service, Mr. Goodman received the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.
In 1953, Raymond married Marjorie Hornstein; she predeceased him after forty-four years of very happy marriage. He was president of Jewelers of America from 1985 - 1987, and also served as president of the Indianapolis Downtown Merchants Association.
Raymond was predeceased by his brothers, Buster and Morris Goodman; and his sisters, Ester, Mayme and Sarah Goodman.
He is survived by his daughter, Judith; sons, Robert (Rose-Marie) and John (Sarah Kunz), and his grandchildren, Anna Fuchs, Cecil, Caroline and Lillian Goodman, and Julia and Ian Goodman.
Contributions in Raymond's memory may be made to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), 300 E. Fall Creek Pkwy N. Dr., Indianapolis, IN 46205.

Dear Goodman Family,
Please accept my sincere condolences in the loss of your Father. The few years that I worked with Raymond at Goodman's downtown was a true honor. He taught me a lot about diamonds and even today I know what to look for when I shop for jewelry(smile). I pray that God will comfort you and that your memories of Raymond will make you smile in the days to come.
God Bless,
Tamika Smith-Duncan & Family

Ray was our neighbor. Just within the last several years we had an impromptu party and Ray joined us. He was the life of the event, telling stories that made us all happy and laugh. What a wonderful man and also a neighbor since 1978 when we moved in the neighborhood. It has been a pleasure to know him. Shirley M. Mueller

Dear Rose-Marie, Bob and kids,
I am very shocked by the passing of Raymond your father-in-law whom I hold in very high regard. The loss made me very sad today and I wanted so much to still talk with him about my dear Riet. In what phase of our lives have we landed? The year 2011 has already been marked by irrevocable events and it is only the 33rd week. How can I console you and your family with this big loss? Many kind words and thoughts from me for all of you, also for John and his family and Judy and Anna. I wish I could be with you and now I only have the memories of this very special man.
I hope he will meet Marjorie and Morris in the hereafter and can talk with Riet about the wedding of his son during a beautiful ceremony on the terrace of our house in Epe.
Much courage for all of you,
your father Harry

Mr. Goodman was an honest, decent, "good man" and the father of a wonderful family. I still have fond memories of him during my youth. His stories were always very amusing and they underscored many of life’s lessons. The wedding rings on my wife’s and my fingers that he helped to select are a lasting tribute to such a kind and generous man. My condolences and prayers go out to the entire Goodmanfamily.

To the Goodman, your Dad in my book was and will always be my hero, I don't know how I would have made it some days without his words of wisdom and a story to tell behind it, he was always thinking and he always made you think before you answered he always said what he was thinking and I grew to love him for always being up front and honest with me , there will always be a special place in my heart for him where I keep those that I love, so to the family be stong, love each other and know that your Dad loved each one of you.

We are saddened by the loss of a dad, grandfather, friend and a great retailer. He is the newest diamond in the heavens and will serve as an example to all that he mentored, motivated and touched. His legacy lives on through all of you! ReJoyce as Raymond is in a happier place!

Raymond was a pleasure to be around and gave me wonderful history lessons with his stories. He amazed me how far back and with great detail he could remember events throughout his lifetime. And at 95, Raymond was still an excellent backgammon player! He will be greatly missed. Tami Roth
