Robert Meurer Obituary

Robert N. Meurer

87, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2014. He was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on January 22, 1927 to Robert E. and Helen M. Dunlop Meurer. He graduated from Gerstmeyer High School, Terre Haute, IN, in 1945 and entered the Navy near the end of World War II. Following the Navy, he enrolled at Indiana State Teachers College where he earned B.S. and M.S. teaching degrees in English, Social Studies, and Music Education. He was a public school teacher for 34 years, with 25 years as a band director, teaching at Blackhawk, Odon, Spiceland, Knightstown, Center Grove, and IPS. Early in his career he also served as Christian Education Director and Minister of Music at Central Presbyterian Church in Terre Haute.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia Wimmer Meurer, whom he married on May 12, 1951. He is also survived by his 3 children and their spouses, Steven (Rhonda) Meurer of Indianapolis, Sharon (Randy) Koehler of Brazil, IN, and Beverly (Douglas) Suddarth of Westfield, IN. He is survived by 7 grandchildren, Mike (Angie) Meurer of Carmel, Mindy (Brad) Root of New York City, Andrea Koehler of Indianapolis, Allison (Peter) Curts of New Albany, Eric (Abby) Suddarth of Carmel, Cameron Suddarth of Westfield, Price (Emma) Suddarth of Seattle; and 5 great grandchildren, Evelyn, Madelyn, and Kathryn Suddarth, Lyla Meurer, and Theodore Curts. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Henry and Hal (Gwen) Meurer; and sisters, Emma (Malcolm) Hoover, Helen M. (Corbett) Turner, and Lena Walton; and sister-in-law, Joyce Meurer. He is survived by his sister Adena (Hal) Rynerson of New Castle, his brother David Meurer of Colorado Springs, and sister-in-law Eleanor Meurer of Terre Haute.

Family, faith, music, and travel were the joys of Bob's life. He attended as many of his grandchildren's programs, concerts, ballgames, and activities as possible. He was an avid traveler, visiting all 50 states, all Canadian provinces and territories, and 54 countries. He was a past president of the Indiana Bandmasters Association, was a member of the American School Band Directors Association, and was active in numerous music organizations. As a lifelong Christian, he served as an elder and deacon in the Presbyterian Church. He has been a member of Second Presbyterian Church for the past 26 years.

Visitation Friday, August 1, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan-Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Blvd West Drive Indianapolis, Indiana 46228. Funeral service Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to service at Second Presbyterian Church 7700 North Meridian Street Indianapolis, Indiana 46260. Burial will be in Washington Park North Cemetery. So glad to have had you for a teacher at Spiceland. Also had the good fortune to run into you when I worked at National City in Indianapolis. You will forever be in my memory and my heart. God sent us all a special person.

Thank you Mr. Meurer for teaching me to play my french horn with private lessons. I still have it and grand children love to play on it now! You will be missed. Prayers to your family!
