Sam Brown Jr. was born in Bastrop, LA. He was a graduate of McClymonds High School in Oakland, where he played basketball, football & baseball. Sam attended West Contra Costa JC, where he yielded the nickname "First Down" for the averaged 10-yards a carry while there. He later attended UCLA, where he continued to play football & baseball. He retained the nickname of Sam "First Down" Brown throughout his college football playing days. Sam served in the US Army from 1956-1958, then returned to Los Angeles to complete his Bachelorette degree at UCLA. Afterwards, he attended Pepperdine University for his Master's degree. Sam retired after 30 yrs. as an elementary school teacher in the Los Angeles area & relocated to Sacramento in 2011. Sam enjoyed his life, his family & his friends. More than being a great athlete, Sam was a great person. He was a modest man, a loving husband, a great brother, a beloved Uncle & a great friend. Funeral services will be held at the Real Life Church Artisan, 1901 Del Paso Blvd., Sacramento, CA on Oct. 28, 2015 at 11 am.

As a young boy in Bakersfield, UCLA's Sam Brown was my first boyhood idol. I had my mom iron the # 15 on the front and back of my light blue t shirt and and the shoulder bars too. What a football talent he was and by all accounts and even better man. I'll never forget him.
