Arthur Bolton Anderson, Born January 12, 1923 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Died February 17, 2013 at home in
Whittier, California surrounded by family.
The family lived in Miami, Florida; Princeton, New Jersey; Waterbury, Connecticut and Hastings on the Hudson, New York as his father's electrical engineering career took him all over the east coast. After his father's death when he was 8, his mother moved with the four children to Everett, Washington and later to Seattle. He attended Roosevelt High School in Seattle where he played basketball and was sports editor of the school newspaper. His high school sweetheart (later his wife) was the editor of the paper.
After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Washington in Seattle. He enlisted in the college student program and was sent to Camp Walters, Texas for basic training (infantry). Was placed in an Army specialized program and went to Texas A&M and Rhode Island State for 9 months in engineering studies. With ASTP closure, he was posted to Camp Pickett, Virginia and became an anti-tank gunner (57 millimeter) with Headquarters Co., 3rd Battalion, 309th Regiment, 78th "lightning" Division. Seventy-eighth Division was selected to garrison the U. S. Sector of Berlin after V.E. Day.
He was discharged from the army in January, 1946 and married his fiancée, Charlotte Sayles, in July, 1946. They lived on the GI bill and in student housing so he could finish his degree at the University of Washington. Immediately after graduation, he started working at Richfield Oil Company in Seattle. Charlotte and Arthur had three children, Carol, Laurie and Richard. In 1957, he was transferred to the Los Angeles area, and the family settled in Whittier. Arthur continued working for Richfield and Atlantic Richfield Oil Company in transportation, marketing and human resources until his retirement in January, 1979.
He and Charlotte enjoyed their weekend golf outings with Al and Ruth Bean. After his retirement, all four joined the tennis group that a friend, June Cooper, started. Charlotte died of pancreatic cancer in December, 1985. In 1990, he married a member of the tennis group, Carol Carlson Hahn of Whittier.
Art was a good friend, a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was always generous and considerate to others and taught his family to be there for others. He was not a joiner of organizations but lived quietly, and gave generously to charities including the American Cancer Society and American Red Cross.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; his daughters, Laurie Nutter and Carol (David) Strait; his grandchildren, Cheryl (Ken) Ng, Christy Nutter, Richard Troy (Alisia) Anderson, Jennifer (Sue) Anderson, Josh (Margie) Anderson, and Julie Strait; his great grandchildren Spencer and Sarah Ng and Richard Ethan Anderson. He was predeceased by his son, Richard Arthur Anderson and his brothers Richard and Cedric Samuel (Andy) Anderson and his sister, Ann Anderson Talbot and his parents, Cedric Samuel Anderson and Ula Coleman Anderson.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society or City of Hope.
