PETE SCHOONOVER JR.
Jan. 27, 1947 - Dec. 23, 2012
Pete Schoonover Jr. went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 22, 2012. He attended Brawley Elementary Schools and graduated from Brawley Union High School in 1965. While attending BUHS he played football and golf. Pete married his high school sweetheart Norma in June of 1968. Pete joined the Navy Seabees and served from 1968 to 1970. While serving he ran a vehicle and heavy equipment shop in Chu Lai, Vietnam. When Pete returned home he went back to work with his father Pete Schoonover Sr. at Pete's Auto Parts and Repair until his retirement. In 1979 Pete and Paul Hoffman decided the kids of Brawley needed a football program so they started Brawley Pop Warner. The first year Pete coached the Mighty Mites, the youngest of the group in Pop Warner. He lovingly called them "the Butterfly Chasers". Pete also coached at other levels and loved it. He then moved to BUHS and was assistant Freshman Coach. He always said "they are so teachable" at that level. Pete later became Freshman Head Coach. Anyone who knew Pete knew he would bleed blue and gold for the football program. Pete coached over 24 years. He also umpired Little League. He not only loved the children but the City of Brawley. Other clubs that he belonged to were the Brawley Athletic Booster and Del Rio Country Club.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Pete Sr. and Willie Schoonover.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Norma; son and daugther-in-law, Sheldon and Lorena Schoonover; son, Jeffery Schoonover; grandsons, Tyler and Jacob Schoonover; his dog, Oscar.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley from 6 to 9 p.m. Service will be held on Friday, January 4, 2013 at Frye Chapel and Mortuary at 10 a.m. Burial will immediately follow at Riverview Cemetery in Brawley.

Norma, Jeff, and Sheldon:
I was truly saddened when I recently learned of Pete's passing from this life to the hereafter. My heartfelt sympathy is with you and your loved ones. I've never had a better friend than Pete.
E.P., Jr., Pete, Petey, re-Pete, whatever name you preferred, was one of a kind. From that roly-poly tap dancing little kid liked by everyone he met to the conscientious family man operating his dad's business, Pete was always loyal and trustworthy to all who knew him.
When kids Pete and I had a great time. We'd ride our bikes downtown, go to black and white WWII movies at the Circle Theater (20 cents admission), eat burgers at Mel's cafe, and visit Pete's mom, Willie, at the print shop next door to the Fox Theater (25 cents admission). Each fall our bikes would take us to each downtown new car dealer to inspect and critique the new cars: the Edsel, the Corvair, the Rocket Olds. Both of us loved cars from an early age. Then we'd go to Pete senior's garage and give him a rundown of our findings.
We were cub scouts together, Witter School safety patrol partners, fellow band members (Pete played the alto sax and I played the clarinet). We marched in the Cattle Call parade and swam at the Planters Hotel pool.
In high school we took up golf (Pete always tolerated my temper tantrums during this frustrating game), went target shooting (22's) with Ron Smith, and had many an adventure with the Pete's garage loaner vehicle, a 1947 Plymouth 4 door sedan. This car had to be the only non-Ford vehicle the Schoonover family ever owned. (It was acquired, not purchased, when the owner failed to pay his repair bill.) And, of course, we often went to car races and worked on our vehicles together. Never a dull moment and never a falling out.
Pete may be gone from this earth, but he'll never be forgotten. The same can be said of his mom and dad; both were always kind and welcoming to his friends.
Norma, although I knew you only a short time, I can say I thought you were a perfect match for Pete- a different and yet complementary personality. I'm sure your two sons are a nice blend of you and Pete.
May God bless you and your family. Know that someday you and Pete will be together again.

I'm so sorry for the loss. I don't know if I ever met my cousin. If so, it would have been long ago. Uncle E.P. (he and my father, Arvel were brothers) came to Texas for a reunion in 2004 and I treasured that time. I'm sure cousin "Petey" was as gentle and respectable a soul as his father. I would have loved to have known my cousin. Blessings to you all.

Dear Schoonover Family, We are so sorry to hear of your loss as well as Brawley's loss, what a great guy he was. I use to sit and watch Pete at work with the Freshman Football players, the last few years of coaching, and the best part out of the whole practice I thought was his storytelling time, those freshman who think they are so cool would sit in a semi circle and listen to him as if Coach Pete was reading a great bed time story, but what he was doing was teaching them something much more important he was talking about life and his experiences. I can only say Thank You Pete for caring for these young kids, they may have never been talked to like a real grandpa should. Colton & Caston say Thank You as well, Sending Prayers Your Way.

Hi, Schoonover family:
My mother called this afternoon with the sad news.
It's been 47 years now since Pete and I went to BUHS, but this hit me hard--so I can't imagine how you and yours must feel.
He was a good man in every sense of the word, and I'll miss him.
My best to you all.
