EDGAR "ED" RAY SELF

Edgar "Ed" Ray Self, 66, of Calipatria passed away May 30, 2010. Ed was a cherished son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle and was loved for his humor and captivating smile. His family was his most valued possession and his proudest moments were cheering for his grandsons Matthew, Gabriel, Edgar and Austin in the field of play. He loved camping with family nd jusst being with his sons Brandon and Eddie. His daughters Linda and Claudia were his princesses who he adored. He was a dedicated son to his mother Oneita Self. Martha, Ed's wife was continually by his side as his loving partner.
Ed is well known for his 35 years of service to the students of Calipatria High School wearing many hats as Teacher, Coach, Athletic Director, Vice Principal, Interim Principal and School Board Member. Affectionately nicknamed "Pops" by his students, Ed believed anything was possible. In Addition to his service to Calipatria High School, he was also a member of the American Legion and St. Patrick's Church. Ed was also proud of his service with the U.S. Navy as he served aboard the USS CHicago (CG-11) during the Vietnam War.
Ed was preceded in death by his father, Edgar A. Self.
Edgar is survived by his wife, Martha Self; mother, Oneita Self; sons and daughters-in-law, Brandon and Linda Self and Edgar and Claudia Self; grandsons, Matthew Self, Gabriel Laguna, Edgar and Austin Self ; brother Jon Self and wife Dian; sisters, Wyna Gilbert and husband John, Sandra Cooper and husband Byron and SueAnne Watkins; father-in-law and Mother-in-law, Leo and Jeanne Haggarty; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services for Ed were held on June 5, 2010.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Pioneers Hospital Foundation.

Please accept my condolences. Mr Self made this world a better place. As my coach in football he taught me many things, not only how to be tough and always to give 110% but to also respect others. He always had passion for whatever he participated in, he was truly a leader and I will miss him.

Coach Self was a great coach and very nice person. I took stats for the wrestling team when I was in high school (1976) and he was loved and admired by all of us. My condolences to Mr. Self's family. I remember when he first started at Calipat as the assistant football coach, all the girls thought he was so handsome! Thirty years later I had the pleasure of working with him at the same high school. I respected him, found him a pleasure to work with and enjoyed his dry sense of humor. He will be missed.
