Dorothy Jean Murchison Brown

Dorothy Jean Murchison Brown, age 86, of Memphis, formerly of Jackson, TN, passed away on July 5, 2014 in Memphis, TN.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at 1 p.m. in the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home with interment to follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.

Mrs Brown was born in Maury City, TN, lived a brief time in Henderson, TN, but lived most of her life in Jackson, TN.

She attended Jackson High School, Mississippi State College for Women, and Union University with post-graduate studies at Memphis State University

Jean retired from the Madison County School System as an elementary school librarian

Jean was active in the community serving in leadership capacities in several organizations including the Altrusa Club, Chi Omega Alumnae Association, Delta Kappa Gamma and a founding member of the Bemis Book Club

Jean was a life long member of the First Baptist Church and dedicated contributor as a Sunday School teacher, church librarian, WMU leader, and Chairman of the Pastor Search Committee and in many other roles.

Her family was her life focus never passing up an opportunity for family get-togethers and giving support whenever and wherever needed.

She loved her neighborhood, her students, and her many wonderful friends participating in as many fun activities and travels as possible

Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Brown, Sr., her son, Jack Brown, Jr., and her parents, Carmack and Orban Murchison.

Survivors include her brother, Judge Franklin Murchison (Joyce); her daughter, Kay Brown Moody (Ray); her sons, Joel Murchison Brown and John Michael Brown; her daughter-in-law, Benita Kerr Brown (Jack, Jr.); and her grandchildren, Elizabeth Kerr Brown Watts (John), Andrew Clayton Brown, Tyler Wilson Brown, Rex Jennings Brown, Lindsay Katherine Brown, Hadley Kristen Brown; and twenty-four nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour at 1 p.m. at the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home.

I have many sweet memories of Mrs. Brown at Malesus Elementary! I was the librarian at Malesus a few years after she retired! Mrs. Brown was loved by all and will be missed! Praying for the family!
