Thomas Burks Obituary
Funeral services for Thom Burks, age 75, will be held 12 p.m. Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Arrington Funeral Directors. Services will be officiated by the Rev. Tim Bass of Mercer Baptist Church, where Thom was a member. Burial will be in Little Hope Cemetery near Falkner, MS at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Mr. Burks died Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at his residence in Mercer, TN.
Thom was born September 17, 1936 in Blue Mountain, MS, the son of the late Joe and Mary Lakey Burks. He was one of the original members of the Madison County Parks and Recreation Board, and assisted in the development of Pope Recreational Complex, as well as the development of Lake Graham.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Dell Joyner Burks; four sons, Tom (T.J.) Burks Jr. of Knoxville, TN, William Joseph (B.J.) Burks of Dyersburg, TN, Tim Burks of West Memphis, AR and John (Flipper) Burks of Jackson, TN; a daughter, Terry Burks Spraggs of Parkers Crossroads, TN; a brother, Hal T. Burks of Humboldt, TN; four sisters, Joyce Whitman of Mercer, TN, Johnnie Ruth Lockwood of Mercer, TN, JoAnn Baker of Mercer, TN and Lendia Lloyd of Dresden, TN; eleven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, with one on the way.
Pallbearers to serve are Tom Burks III, Nathan Burks, Hunter Burks, Jesse Burks, Jeffery Wall, Madison Burks and Alex Burks.
The family will receive friends Saturday, January 7, 2012 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., with services to follow at the funeral home.
