Robert Wright Obituary

Robert Kent Wright, 73

Robert Kent Wright, 73, of Terre Haute passed away on June 19, 2014 in Regional Hospital after a brief, but hard-fought battle with cancer.

Kent was born to Sheldon and Paulene (Pflugshaupt) Wright on February 18, 1941 in La Porte, Indiana. He grew up in Romney, Indiana and graduated from Southwestern High School.

He received both his bachelors and masters of science degrees from Indiana State University began post-graduate work at Columbia University while serving as director of intramural sports for three years.

Returning to ISU in 1967, Kent began a teaching and administrative career that spanned thirty-nine years in physical education and recreational sports; working alongside his mentor and friend Jim Wittenauer. In addition, he was owner of proprietor of the Ballyhoo Tavern from 1976 through 1984.

Upon his retirement from ISU in 2006 Kent enjoyed the quiet and simple life of home and family, particularly relishing in the role of "Papaw." Tending his garden (particularly those famous tomatoes,) endless hours of mowing, and caring for his dogs and cats all brought contentment and joy to him. He also became the family's "recycling king."

Kent was preceded in death by his parents and older brother Craig, and nephews Jason and Brian Wright. Surviving are wife Sherri who he married August 14, 1976; his daughter Erin of Plano, Texas; his son Jared and daughter-in-law Kristin of Terre Haute; and his two dear grandchildren, Jackson and Sammie. Also surviving are brothers Keith (Janet) Wright of Lafayette, Indiana and Paul (Peg) Wright of Bedford, Indiana and their families. His mother and father-in-law, James and Bonnie Hickman and brothers-in-law Kelly and Toby Hickman, all of Texas, also survive.

A private memorial service is planned with a celebration of live to be held at a later date. Final resting place for Kent is Roselawn Cemetery in Terre Haute, with funeral arrangements provided by Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, Terre Haute, IN. 47804

The family suggests that anyone wanting to honor Kent's memory to give to the animal shelter of spay/neuter organization of your choice.

Kent's family also extends a sincere thank you to Dr. Thomas Schmitz, Dr. Chandra Reddy, and the staff of the Paul Siebenmorgen Cancer Center (infusion and radiation); to the Regional Hospital nurses, particularly Kelli, Angel, and Cindy—who gave Kent such gentle and compassionate care; and to the Gentiva Hospice family for providing such comfort at our time of need. Dear Sherri,
My deepest sympathy and prayers to you and your family.
I worked for Kent and spent many of nights closing the infamous Bally bar. I also house sat the cat who scared me to death by jumping down on my head from the rafters. Some of my greatest time and treasures where spent with Kent and the gang and making the occasional "trash run".

May the peace and love of our Lord Jesus Christ guide you during this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Monty

My sincere sympathy to Sherri and your family. Have not had contact with Kent since we were in college together. I rember him as a class act who related well to people and excelled in his recreational related expertise.

I worked for Kent as a Work-Study employee while an undergrad @ ISU during the early 70's. It was during this era that ISU enrollment had peaked @ 14k, and I-M participation reached an all-time historic high. Kent, Bob Snyder & Dr. Wittenauer were the wheels of this collegiate recreational machine!

Great memories of that ISU era, and Kent was an integral part of it.

God Bless...
